Trick question earth being round has nothing to do with a wall being built.

The curvature of the earth from a relative point of view would have no affect, but rather the terrain he builds on.

Jim's goal is to build a wall, not prove the earth is round, even on that scale the earths curvature wouldn't hinder what the blueprints called for as building material, and the overlords who look over this wouldn't know that it was asking to much for what was called for as they do not have the intellect as jim being a engineer, and if they do in this fairly tale world of yours, then they would have the knowledge to discover the earth is in fact round, and if needed to test this theory jim can send others out to gather the data for him since he is not allowed to leave the city.

Now then what impudent idea will you come up with next to discredit this theorem on your vast war to prove your higher knowledge that you've acquired, but have yet to get any real world experience with?

With this in mind, the last question could also have never been answered, because Sythe would have argued that his country actually exists in the alpine slopes of Shitland where the ground alters based on their god's whim

The volume of concrete used in the wall would have to compensate for the curve of the earth as already discussed. You've built buildings (or you say you have) therefore you'll know that you used laser sights to make level foundations. If you cut a plane out of a sphere and build with set square and level you will be ok as long as the plane cut is not too large. Of course a 2km high wall which stretches 150km is very large and if you were building this for real you'd be getting out pen and paper to do the curvature math. Don't bullshit me. If you didn't you'd be sued for incompetence to the tune of hundreds of millions for an incomplete wall you didn't factor the right amount of material into.

Now then what impudent idea will you come up with next to discredit this theorem on your vast war to prove your higher knowledge that you've acquired, but have yet to get any real world experience with?

It seems I've caused quite a lot of offence. Are Jim's problems so insulting to your intellects that your relative inabilities to solve them require ad hominem attacks?

These are critical thinking problems the type which might be asked of high school students. Certainly I did a few of them (and got them wrong) in high school, many years ago.

They really have nothing to do with real world experience or the person presenting them. Essentially the problems so far have been: q1) can you carefully analyse and understand the internal components and processes of a problem or system?, q2) can you carefully analyse and understand the external environment in which your problem must be solved?, q3) can you design an experiment to prove a basic fact about the world within reasonable cost, time and logistical constraints?

I was going to do some more of these but I don't think they are appreciated. In particular rather than solving the problem mostly the fictional backstory which is designed to make the problem less boring is being attacked.

Anyway some of it was fun :)

that last comment was again bullshitting around, the debate was fun tho. I actually appreciated the mental exercise, though most of our debate digressed

I've got another one which is cool if you promise to let the back story be :P

Lolol ok post it, but I have to finish idiotic "business 'management'" homework tonight. This shit doesn't teach squat about management.

Lol. I have a bachelor's degree in management. My 300 level "Leadership" class was taught by someone who was a part of the University maintenance staff. "In-State" tuition there was $6,000 per semester....

I enjoy reading them. Truth be told, I don't have the intellect to comment in a serious manner, so I just read the responses. Do continue though.

But if jim is in a era were space exploration doesn't exist they wouldn't have the tools for laser precision on a large scale basis, and would most likely follow the path of just surveying using the horizon.

Also the curvature of the earth wouldn't affect the volume of concrete used but rather the terrain and the changes in altitude to keep it more or less leveled From a personal perspective. If you look at the grand scale may the curvature affect the amount? maybe. but due to our perspective and not sensing the earth is round to begin it would have no bearings on a project of that scale.

Also the height of the wall at 2km wouldn't be feasible in that era as they wouldn't have the engineering skills to build a foundation to withstand that much weight.

What other convoluted details do you want to throw into the mix?

If you read the question it's a dry lake bed which would follow the curvature well.

The curvature of the earth needs to be taken into account because the radius at the bottom of the wall is substantially different to the radius at the top. This means you are not producing a rectangular prism of cement but rather a rectangular cross section which is extruded along the length of a 150km arc. The resulting difference in volume is substantial as already discussed.

Idk who would hire you to build something if you can't do basic geometry.

The structure is all one piece, it doesn't have foundations. It would probably sink substantially into the ground. But made out of the right material it could certainly support its own weight. There are plenty of larger mountain ranges around that don't collapse in on themselves.

But in that day in age they wouldn't have the skills to produce material that could withstand that much weight, and even if you say it's all one piece it is not, concrete is done in a series of foundation while being tired in with extruding rebar. Also There is a difference in strength based on disturbed dirt and natural dirt, Mountains do not collapse in on themselves due to the fact that it has been compacted and formed over millions of years, but if you are to terraform the lake bed, that is going to severely weaken it as a foundation.

With the amount of weight that would be put into that and it being a lake bed which mostly likely has a natural spring below it would most deff sink and collaspe.

You should do some research into soil compaction which would be required for a project of that scale, but in your era they wouldn't have the technology to do it. We have to do calculations every time before we even put a crane on sight and must determine it's max live load aswell as dead load before allowing it to be placed on disturbed soil. Many soil types have different load bearings and that lake bed wouldn't be a good one.

But in that day in age they wouldn't have the skills to produce material that could withstand that much weight,

If the magic communist concrete has the same compressive strength as high end concrete made with portland cement it would have been able to support its own weight.

Density of concrete ~ 2.4 t/m^3
Compressive strength of concrete ~ 17 to 70 MPa depending on the exact chemistry and setting conditions.

A square meter of footing would have a mass of 2000 cubic meters of cement above it which is ~ 4800 tons, or ~4.8*10^7 newtons. In other words it would have to withstand approximately 50 MPa, well within the limits of conventional high end concrete mixes.

Not to mention that it's magic concrete so it could have any compressive strength you want.

and even if you say it's all one piece it is not, concrete is done in a series of foundation while being tired in with extruding rebar.

Such a structure would not require rebar. Also we're assuming that somehow they were able to set it as a single crystal. Perhaps the magic concrete crystallizes faster the more pressure is on it.

Also There is a difference in strength based on disturbed dirt and natural dirt, Mountains do not collapse in on themselves due to the fact that it has been compacted and formed over millions of years, but if you are to terraform the lake bed, that is going to severely weaken it as a foundation.

For the sake of argument the lake bed was also granite bedrock.

Missing the entirely point of the exercise. I would not have started with magic concrete if I wanted a realistic scenario with respect to materials.

Shiteians don't have phones and also their spoken language is a series of licks and pops that sounds like bacon frying in a hot pan. Even if they could talk to me I would just be thinking about bacon and wouldn't understand them. Then I would make myself some bacon and eggs
