This theory is better known as the theory of "Equivalent Exchange".

Over many centuries a theory has developed stating to some degree: "To gain something, you must sacrifice, or give something in return".

Do you believe this theory to be true, what is your opinion on this and how it coincides with life?

Did you know that in Tibet when they want something they give something away?

It must be why they're such a dominant global power.

This theory works in some ways, like economically and scientifically (transferal of mass), and does not work in other ways, like how people will not always be nice to you, even if you are to them.

Ok this theory works in Science and shit but if you wanna be a dipshit and say it works in life 2.. go ahead

But you'd be wrong.. well at least kinda wrong.. not really more like moderatly wrong, There is no possible way of proving that if you are giving let's say a dollar, that would you get anything in return for that dollar.

Because you receive/give things everyday...

So there is no real way to prove this -_-
then again... there is no way to disprove it...

So there is no point debating on this topic because nothing can prove nor disprove :|

i think this theory is true

Generally, in terms of science, this would be true. To light a match, you lose some energy by striking it (of course, you don't actually "lose" the energy, but I think you know what I mean).

Most of the time, yes this is true. Nothing in life is free, even if sometimes it is free for you. If someone gives you $100, then something was given up in order for you to have it. Its not always true though in the moral sense though. Some people are good people, and yet die of cancer.

This reminds me of the first law of Alchemy! In order to gain something you must lose something of equal or greater value! Equivalent Exchange!

This theory is very true! It's like working for profit or respect :p

I find its true.
If you want to gain something [for example buy something at a store] you need you pay for it, in which your losing money..
But then again what if someone gives you something for free?

To gain weight you potentially need to eat more food,

therefore giving food in order to gain weight.

I haven't focussed on this intensely yet, but i'm sure it doesn't work from all angles.

thats so true^

if someone ants to give you something for free, you must have done te same t someone else?

Would your opinion change, if I were to say...

If you were to write a scar script (auto), for the Runescape client. You may gain millions of Runescape gold by writing the program, or instant fame. However, you lose that amount of time which you could have spent elsewhere, on that project.

In a theoretical event, you give someone five dollars for free. That person may "like you more" temporarily, they may hate you, or they may not show any sign of thankfulness. When a person is doing "nothing", that becomes "something" therefore it can also be considered an interaction. Just something to think about. =/

The majority of people think about something in exchange as being a raw material, however it does not have to be.

Lol i think thats the main idea about that show called Full metal alchemist... lol i thought it was fake, didnt know it was a real deal.

Same, i love the show.
This theory works in science, but not in society.

^ Good show.. but the ending was horrible.

Also, to the question, my answer is that it varies on the situation. As Atomic said, you aren't always treated nicely if you treat others nicely, but other times, for example, in science, if you light a cigarette, you lose energy, but you gain like.. the firey part of the cigarette, and you can smoke it.. (I hope you know what I mean.. xP)

yes but item possesions arent the entire case, mentally they could improve, therefore it is an equivellent exchange. it isnt a technical term anyway smarts its PHILISOPHICAL so that means it isnt about about possesions, you could eat a box of chocolates, and you will get fatter from them. you can also give the box to someone you love and they will love you, you dont get an item in return in this case, it is mental. if you go through kimo-therapy if you have cancer, you will pay a lot, but it will greatly extend your life span, once again no item, but it is still equivelent exchange. do you see what i mean?

by the way thats a horible expample of equivelent exchange...

Or to pick up a twenty dollar bill you need to pick it up.

Then again you can sleep all day and receive millions in inheritance..

yes i agree.to gain something you must sacrifice something that is what we call hard work. example - study for knowledge in exchange for your time
