Thesis: Life has no purpose (that can be understood by current human logic)
1. For life to have a purpose, it must be more than what we experience on the earth.
2. For life to be more than we experience on earth, there must be a higher being (or power).
2. For there to be a higher being, the higher being must have been created (presumably from a higher being).
3. Under current logic, something cannot be created out of nothing.
4. Therefore, there is no possible "highest" power
5. Therefore, there is no ultimate purpose in life.
6. mindfuck

What gives life purpose. Do you agree with the logic prescribed above? Discuss.

Purpose, importance and morality are quite obviously human concepts.
Do you subscribe to a religion? Because all religions, each of which claims to have "higher" support, put strong emphasis on morality.

As a rebuttal of the existence of any deity, this argument is useless, because if it is true then surely there can be no possible universe.
My argument is saying that, if a deity were to have created the world at a certain point, time as we know it is not universal.
My argument also says that, as we know things exist (each of us personally know that as we think we are), those things must have been created from nothing.

Regarding your main point, why do you say purpose is a human concept? Do you think a deity created the world on a whim, with no goal? Do you think the religious texts that tell people to live in a certain way are not from God? Because those certainly say there is purpose.

Logic is a creation of the human mind and does not have any direct effect on the universe itself, so to assert that for things to be logical there has to be a higher being holds no standing in an argument of this nature.

Also, it is my personal opinion that the purpose of life varies from individual to individual. As posted before me, it is a product of the human mind.. and so you can make your "purpose" whatever suits you. It's all in your head. If you wish to believe that life has no purpose, then your life has no purpose.. even though that's a very apathetic way of looking at things.

I'd also like to point out that according to renowned theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking, the universe can and will create itself out of nothing. Also, particles are formed through Hawking radiation at the event horizon of black holes. So there's another point off of your list.

I am a strong believer that there is no purpose in life.

But then, can it all be, coincidence?

I'm unconvinced that there exists any deity, certainly not a humanized bearded sky god with genocidal tendencies. I don't see why you took what I said as advocacy of religion, I'm a free thinker, just an unbiased one.

I find the notion of absolutely 'nothing' (pre-big bang) turning in to 'something' hard to grasp. Could you quote his exact words, or link me to the source?

Exactly. To quote Richard Dawkins: "The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference."

Completely understandable, it is a hard idea to grasp even for the best of minds

"Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing," he writes. "Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, why we exist.

"It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the universe going."

Also, hawking radiation:

I am a strong believer that there is no purpose in life.

If you're implying that our existence is a mere coincidence then yes, you are 100% correct. However, existence does not equate to purpose. Anything can give your life purpose, as it's all in your head. Just because there's no bearded man in the clouds guiding you through life doesn't mean you can't be driven by a purpose in your life. It's what YOU make it. Look at it as your legacy.

A purpose is defined by the person who's purpose it is.
There doesn't have to be a purpose for someones life for them to have a purpose themselves, i.e the purpose of life can be construed as 'to live'.

We have no purpose in life, but we treat ever other human/animal as a competitor at what we have which is life. We have the opportunity to do more things then every other species in the world due to evolving quicker then any other germ/organism/animal/insect/anything living. We compete with each other to become the best (eg: nicest, richest, strongest, badest, funniest) We cant do nothing more than that, but is there really anything more to achieve in life?

I know this is a fucked up example, but on a much smaller scale and all its like getting every single skill to 99 on runescape, doing all mini games + quests, and being like ? dam is there more to life ? Fuck yeah there is more to life go outside.

Us as humans just haven't gone outside far enough to discover it. (it = the purpose of life).

I dont believe in a "higher power" i am an atheist. But i believe that humans made it this far from competing against other species of animals over millions of years of evolution, and now there is nothing else to compete against (unless you want to compete against a fish or an ape or another redundant animal) it is our duty to compete against other humans for the highest spot available. That is "my" purpose in life, till im informed otherwise on a better choice or opinion.

Also you can take alook at ancient civilizations at their purpose and they believed that they were under a "higher power". All the great ancient civilizations believed so and they were the only ones that thrived, as it gave control over the population. Do you think the Great Pyramids would have been built if everyone was equal ?

Also try and tell the war veterans that have fought for their country that "their life has no purpose" , expect nothing less then a backhand.

You are thinking waaaaay too deep, and need to relex and just live life one step at a time.

Wrong, Wrong, Wrong.

No.

we are all gods children. we are here for his purpose.

I don't know how many times I'm going to have to tell you this before you get it through your head, but this is not a Christian forum, nor is this a thread about Christianity. If you want, I can find you a perfectly suitable forum for your preaching.

It's his interpretation - open your mind.

im just telling you guys the truth

I never knew my mother was God.
Nice revelatory truth.

"Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is."

But where did the "nothing" come from? What is "nothing"?

No.
Why does life need a purpose?

Quantum Physics has been largely disproven and is not widely accepted. By purpose I mean something to work in life for, a purpose we should take in life in order to do something that is greater than life itself. Also, where did the "nothing" come from? "Nothing" isn't actually nothing, it's space.

All I'm saying is that, under our current system of logic, a creator cannot exist as he would have had to have been created. My point is not that the logic is right, my point is that the logic is probably limited in its ability to understand matters greater than humanity itself.
