Why do you believe in God?

I agree It's better to believe in something than nothing, in my opinion.

 

Yes it is impossible to prove/disprove the existence of a Divine Deity, but if i told you that i believed that a purple elephant created the universe and that that elephant is the one that keeps me from dying every second that im alive. You wouldn't believe me right? but you cant disprove it even though you know its not real.

Who says Atheists don't believe in anything? In my opinion id rather believe in Science and things with evidence, and proof. Like evolution, not something based on an ancient book...

 

The thing i dont understand about evolution, is that if humans came from chimps, why are there still chimps? :S

evolution says that man started to walk, occupying a different niche, and some monkeys continued to live in the trees.

 

Humans evolved not from the chimps, but from their close "cousins" that are extinct now. If you took a little time to do some research you'd know that and lots more.

No evolution doesn't say that... If you had stopped being ignorant for an hour and read a little bit of the book "The God Delusion" you'd know what it took millions of years for humans to evolve, and the species we evolved from is technically extinct. Oh, and heres the definition of evolution for you guys.

i was pointing out that evolution is a gradual process, not stating the opposite.

i was saying that monkeys and man evolved from the same species, usually simplified as "monkeys".

everyone knows this. we use the term monkey because we dont want to memorize mostly useless names of our extinct predecessors.

That one sentence makes no sense. If you believe in the law of physics, then you also must believe that there is no god, due to the fact HE can't come from nothing. But.. if you don't believe in the law of physics, then you lack knowledge, because everything stated in the laws of physics is true. So which is it then?

The flaw in all the arguments made by followers of a god is that they always state a reason why atheists are wrong, and ironically, it contradicts themselves in the process.

I believe in God because there is life. The same way I believe in gravity. I don't know what gravity looks like, but I'm not going to be jumping off cliffs because I know gravity will kill me. Just as I'm not going to kill or steal or be greedy because I know doing so will screw me over in the end.

Everyone has a right to figure it out for themselves, as I have been both religious and atheist, and now I am just spiritual, not following any organized religion. I meditate a lot and am happy and I found this to be the best way to live my life.

I'd rather "throw in my chips" on something. At least it gives me a chance of going to "heaven."

 

The difference is that we can prove gravity exists. If you drop an apple from the top of a ladder, 100% of the time the apple will fall and hit the ground.
While you don't have a way to test if god exists.

So a person who lives a life where he never harms anyone, does charity work, raises a nice family and is nice to everyone he meets but doesn't believe in god deserves to go to hell?

 

I never said someone who doesn't believe in God deserves to go to hell. I'd rather believe something and it be wrong..then to believe nothing and be wrong.

 

I believe in a higher power because in a way it makes me look differently at death. Instead of thinking someone and their soul is gone forever I like to think that their going to a better place. In my mind theres a .000000000000000001% chance that a god truely exists but hey if believing in a higher power makes me happy then I'm going to do just that.
