Violence in Video Games

I personally respect why the certificates on media are enforced,
but I think they are indeed over the top.

i think its just for entertainment

Yeah, to be honest, who the hell would go kill someone just because they killed someone in a GAME lol.

The people who went on rampages were obviously mentally challenged and would've done a violent act sooner or later whether it had been from playing a game or from watching a violent dvd. The game was unlucky in the fact that they played that first and therefore the game got all the blame. Some people say "it is not the guns that do the killing, it is the person behind them" (or something like that). I think that statement fits into the violent game thing, its not the games that make the decision, its the person.

i agree with a lot you said...GTA is the most violent game that ive ever palyed but still its a fun game lol

To quote Marcus Brigstocke, "If video games had affected us then Pacman would have made us run round in dark rooms, munching pills and listening to repetitive electronic music."
Personally I think violence in video games is fine, I may like running round shooting people in GTA, but im not gonna turn around and start doing it for real. Theres a huge line before doing it in a game and doing it for real, and if that lines blurred, then you really should be in a mental institute somewhere.
People who use that as an excuse in court are just idiots.
Sorry if i ranted about that too much, its just one of those things that annoys me.

I play violent video games every fucking moment I'm on my Xbox 360.

Gears of War has you shooting shotgun blasts at eachother, until one of the players gets graphicly blown in half, and after playing hour after hour on the weekends, I don't feel like going up to somone and shooting them in half.

Crackdown has you in a GTA like setting, except the only difference is that your a cop, and you can jump 50 feet in the air. But other than that, you can still shoot/grenade up anybody you want on the streets, and after I play a couple hours of that game, I never wanna go outside and shoot up my neighborhood.

So, why is it so influent on kids and even some adults?

Here's a simple rule I take for video games.
I'll buy games that aren't related to the real world at all.

The GTA series takes this waaaaay to far, which is why I hate there fucking games. In fact, try applying this to video games, compared to real life. What if someone came in your neighborhood with some sort of firearm and exsplosive, and started shooting up everyone you knew (Your family, your friends, even yourself). Pretty fucking scary huh? Cause you know what? Even though the chances are one in a thousand, any fucking maniac can do this.

Compared to violent game like Halo and Gears?
Well, when was the last time you saw a gunfight on the news that involved the Covenent and Locust? When was the last time you saw somone jump 50 feet in the air, building to building? When was the last time you saw on the internet weapons like plasma beams and "Hammer of Dawns"?

So in reality, there is no excuse if you go out and kill people, and blame it on violent video games. Most games aren't really realistic, except for the GTA series (And what I'm talking about in GTA is just part of a fraction), and maybe a couple others that I'm forgetting, but it's still not real.

If you are influenced by some game, then you have some serious issues, and need to go find some help.

Nice quote, i may be able to incorporate it in my assignment. I also agree completely with what you have said.

you only watch a DVD a few times....but a video game lots.

True, but does repetition really make much difference? Besides, when i finish a game i never play it again, it goes in my "beaten game pile". When i finish watching a dvd, it doesn't just go in a pile to never to be watched again. I don't know if thats the same for everyone or if thats just me.

Games do nothing to you, and look at all the sports today, boxing, football, hockey, and ultimate fighting as leading entertainers. Games are the least of our problems...

Love that quote man. And I agree. I think video games are actually a good outlet for anger and violence. In situations where a person is really pissed off, a viedo game gives them an enemy and a reason to DESTROY that enemy. It keeps them occupied, gives their anger a focus. When a kid or someone does go crazy and on some violent rampage people like to focus the blame on anything but human nature because all of the othert stuff they can control. We can put a limit on violent video games, we can bash violent music but we cant control our basic impulses so people like to act like it isnt there. But it is. Violence is unfortunately but inevitably a natural urge. And video games is a release from it. Not everyone benefits from them in the same way. Yea it does just give some people fuel for their rage and more creative ideas on how to hurt people. But more than likely thats not the case because for every insane kid with a gun and a plan to shoot up the school there are hundreds of pissed off kids playing violent video games.

video games dont kill people...people who play video games kill people

so if you buy ur kid who has no sens3e in the world that will steal a gun or stab someone with a knife a rated m for mature video game, its the societys fault and also America's for distributing the games

Okay, so if those people play the games and they get a machete to kill the person, it's Bob's fault for making the machete in the first place? The video games play a part and it's been proven time and time again no matter how insignificant a part. They can desensitize kids. I'm not saying I'm going to take an RPG and go crazy because I've played Halo, but they can desentize.

I've done no such THING![/QUOTE]

Maybe video games can take SOME blame but not all, no where near how much blame they get now.

I completely agree that video games are more an outlet for anger and that violence is human nature. I thought i had already said that but i guess not, i shall edit my first post to add that in ;) .
