Violence in Video Games

Studies show that violence in video games cause little to no change in behaviour. The main cause for aggression is seeing violence first hand. For example if a child saw his father hit his wife then the child would be very likely to be a more aggressive person.

I have to say that only weaked minded and emotionally unstable people actually become sucked into video game violence.
One kid at my old high school was a total weirdo, he loved watching people getting killed, from a young age he watched movies like Jason and Halloween.
Another time when he was young he saw someone commit suicide near a metro station.
Finally he went into such a psychiatric state where he confined in some people that he would go on a killing spree, he was later stopped before he could do so.
I play games like GTA, RE4, Manhunt, Predator Concrete Jungle which involves plenty of killing and violence. Yet I never will go on a killing spree, some people are just more... impressionable.
I think it's up to the parents to decide if their child is ready to try a 17+ games.
Just don't let them buy Halo 3, I hate it when some 10 year-old accuses me as being a hacker...

I think violence is fine, just that it is not raciest or anything like that

Hmmm...Tbh some games are quite explict. But the games have to go through a whole load of complaints and goverment issues before they can become that explict. So games atm that are explict are reasonable games and need to be explict to enchance the gameplay.

Yeah i guess theres another point in your statement too, if kids believe that violent video games cause them to act violent, then what if they changed the game a bit? Made it less violent, i don't think it'd help since i don't believe children are affected to make decisions based on a game. For example (this'll help everyone understand what i just said since i realise i didn't say it very clearly) say you take some of the blood and gore out of a game, so a kid plays it, stabs a person and theres no blood, no mark, and the guy just walks away (because you just beat him). Well wouldn't that kid just then go stab someone since they realised that it doesn't hurt anyone? If you think they wouldn't, then you also think that they aren't influenced by the violent games. If you think they would then HAHA got you again, shows violent games have consequences and teaches kids not to use weapons on other people in real life. Looks like i just won my case? ;)

Quite honestly, I don't think that video game violence is as big an issue as some make it out to be. Yes, some gratuitously inappropriate games may have a negative effect on children (for example, allowing a five year old to play GTA might not be the best idea), but by and large, they tend to be harmless. Some might even say that violent video games allow people to take out their frustration in a healthy manner.

i think some games have gone too far, and the rating systems aren't specific enough. for example halo 2 is rated M, a game that centers on a hero trying to save the world. A few other games have you shooting cops and killing hookers and also are rated M.

I guess it depends what country you live in too though for the ratings. In some countries, GTA:SA is rated 18+ but here in australia is is MA15+.

First off, there is a lot of violence in video games, more and more as the gaming industry expands.

Secondly, movies SHOULD NOT be looked at before video games. One fact being in video games you are actually there, the first person view, YOU are the one shooting people in the head, YOU are the one trying to disarm a bomb before it kills you. In a movie, you are simply watching it. Now in NO WAY am I saying movies aren't violent, because they by far are the most violent, but your point is not valid.

Also, it is NOT up to the parents to buy the games. An 8 year old kid could easily rent or buy a rated M video game. At least you'd need to show an ID for a R rated movie.

I won't say the games aren't entertaining, because I love to play them as well. What I will say is how more and more realistic each day games become. Soon you'll have a game that looks identical to real life where you are shooting cops and jacking cars. Especially when young kids play those games, what kind of messages is it really giving them? Bad ones. I don't care if you say it doesn't affect you, because IT DOES, quite a bit. People who play violent video games and get into them have a tendency to be a lot more aggressive than people who don't.

All and all, I think it is something that should be watched, and at the moment, it might be ok, but it's on a close line.

Give me an example of a "bad" M rated game? Most jump from pg straight to MA15+.

Your second point has already been argued though i'll address it again.
Yes, you ARE the one shooting, you ARE controlling your character etc. BUT most video games also show consequences, some are a bit more in depth. Some would say, look at GTA, so violent. But if you don't use cheats etc then it shows theres consequences for your actions, you kill someone, the cops bust you. You kill those cops, more come. Even your character in a whole, he often has people out trying to kill him. It's clear he doesn't live a good life and i think kids know that.
By controlling your character in game and seeing the consequences shows that if you do those same things in real life, because you control your actions, you will be punished. Some could argue the opposite for movies, it doesn't always show consequences etc.

my argument is that if its too violent for u then dont play it.. otherwise stop complaining, just because its out there doesnt mean u hav to play it lol XD

i agree with ya tyson.

Violence dont affect me. I like it in game or movie, but not in real life - there is difference. Also if you are underaged to play a game - you can play it, but you might take violence too realistic, and start using it in real life?

idk if i hav posted b4 on this but my ocmp has been stuffin up.. but just becoz a game is out doesnt mean u hav to buy/play it.. if its too violent for u then y the heck would u play it let alone complain

i agree video games dont turn ppl to crime its usualky there child hood and such

I heard that manhunt 2 was forbidden in UK tho its allowed to play it in USA.
To my mind when u play brutal it changes your thoughts about some aspects of life. Tho that happens in young age...

Games have ratings people should follow them, or they can whine.

Personnaly I believe violence in video games is not a major cause of the society we live in today. Its the parents fault is my personal belief that is the cause of the broken society we live in
