Right i live in britain, where this is currently a huge overcrowding in our prisons. And as a result, criminals are often not sent to prison or given shorter sentences than usual. One serial rapist got only 3 years in prison due to his space being needed.
Anyway one way to reduce over crowding would be to re-instate the death penalty, as then maximum security prisons won't be needed as much and their spaces would be freed up.
Another random fact, the average prisoner costs between £20 000 and £50 000, they also don't have to pay taxes and are costing the taxpayers roughly £16 million per year. My solution would be to make prisoners do manual labour while in prison to cover their costs as they have to do in other countries.
Anyway I'd like to hear your opinions on this and any suggestions you have to ease prison overcrowding.

I think prisoners get it way to good. If you kill someone, you deserve to die.

I agree with the manual labour but the death penalty is out of the question.

Why though? If you have willingly took a persons life, but not in self defense i believe you deserve to die.

My suggestions? Build more prisons.

Killing somebody because of a crime they did accomplishes nothing. It is simply a petty sense of revenge that makes us glad that a mass murderer gets killed.

So keeping people locked up in over crowed prisons when they intentionally and willingly killed someone, at the expense of tax payers is right?
No.

Death penalty is almost an easy way out, they should have to suffer the rest of their lives in prison, in a cell, 23.9 hours a day.

No.

If the prisons are so crowded it's a given that there are alot of prisoners. With all these prisoners a lot of money can be made with manual labour. Give the prisoners something productive to do for a few hours a day while they're in jail.

No.

First, it costs more to execute somebody than to keep them in jail for 40 years.

Second, the issue of the death penalty will NOT be decided upon the availability of jail cells, the cost of prison guards, and so forth.

A problem with the death penalty is wrongful conviction. What if you execute somebody, and years later, new technology shows them to be innocent? This has happened in hundreds of cases since DNA testing was introduced.

Also you don't live in Britain, we don't have enough room to build more prisons. Also the murderers dont really suffer, they spend their time living for free, getting free meals and free shelter while the rest of us have to pay for it. In effect theyre being encouraged to perform crime if they live someone rough or on the streets. If we re-instate the death penalty criminals will actually have something to fear, instead of just a cushy life.

First, almost every country has large expanses of land not being used productively. The U.K. is one of these countries. I'm Irish, I know what I'm talking about.

Second, jail is not a cushy place. This is commonly known. It is infinitely preferable to live in freedom than to live in jail.

Hmm, shredder i think i'm neutral. I guess we just need to find a new solution to the problem.

If you kill someone you dont deserve things good at all, things are made way to easy for everyone who does serious crimes. so ya death penalty all the way.

the way prisons are right now, if i was homeless id probably just do a crime to get throw into a prison. i mean, come on its WAY to nice.

Prisons are actually not nice at all. You would probably regret your crime the moment you entered.

What will executing a criminal accomplish in material terms?

First of all, the way people are being executed is retarded and really expensive. Why not just give em' the good old headshot? When someone is executed expensively. it is at the taxpayers' expense. What would be the point of killing a murderer. He killed someone so we kill him? Were not gettin' over what the guy just did, were just getting even, so what's the point? They should buy some space on other countries and ship off the real criminals to those areas. I thought the UK was rich...

Prisoners Get It Too Easy. Free Meals, Free Bed, Free Clothes. No Taxes No Electricity Bills,
Then Again The Death Penalty Is Tooo High Of A Punishment
Manual Labour Or Sumthing AlongThose Lines Would Be A Good Idea
They WouldPay For There Own Cost To Be There

Also true

i don't believe in the death sentence. I think this is wrong. Just because someone committed a sin doesn't mean they have to be killed. I think spending 50 years in prison or the rest of your life is worse then the death sentence.

All they need to do is build more prisons, and this is off topic but i think that animal abusing should be a stricter law, most cases of these are mistimeder (which i have no clue to spell) but, some cases are felony's and i believe all should be!

Another solution i read somewhere was to create "criminal battalions" where murderers, rapists etc are offered the chance to go serve in a special part of the armed forces for half of their original jail sentence. It was in the book "Chopper" if any of you want to read more about it. Anyway the general jist is that you create a place in the middle of nowhere miles away from any inhabitants (I know this isn't possible in the UK but would be in Australia or similar), anyway they would receive basic training, all weapons would be locked away, and any attempts at mutiny or abandoning will be answered by court martial. Then if we are engaged in a war like we have in Iraq we could send in the battalion. I believe the french had one once, apparently they were deadly and fought with huge enthusiasm, leaving the enemy in fear of them. Anyway again does anyone have any idea's about this

Also i believe if we do re-instate the death penalty it should be cheaper, the idea of the shooting squad is a good idea, but it could be considered slightly barbaric. But i believe the death penalty should be saved for serial killers, or similar.
