Death Penalty

The thing is, when about to commit a major crime, I'm not sure most people who would have proceeded under threat of life in prison would not proceed under threat of the death penalty.

Maybe not, if they think they can get away with it. Plus, people have gotten out of prison after recieving a life sentence. Think about it, the fear of death must be effective in some cases. It'd sure as hell stop me. And the issue about valuable tax dollars being used to feed criminals still stands. The only thing wrong with the death penalty is how long it takes.

First, our tax dollars apparently aren't that valuable. We're frittering them away for our leaders personal gain.

Second, in most cases, it actually costs less to jail a person for life than to execute them, due to many extra trials that need to take place for the death penalty.

Third, with today's legal system, with appeals, possible corruption of evidence, etc., the accused stands an excellent chance of being acquitted from the death penalty, or else having a new trial brought about.

Finally, how long does it take for somebody to be actually executed? Some 10 years, no?

Just because we're waisting tax dollars elsewhere doesn't make it ok to waiste them feeding murderers.

If you compare feeding and carring for a prisoner for 50 years, to only catering to him for 10, it seems more logical that it would spend less money. Because even if a prisoner has a life sentence he is most likely going to submit appeals and probably have other trials.

It is good that the death penalty is easily dismissed, this permits any falsely accused persons a chance for justice. All the same, if one of your family members were a victim of murder or rape, you would most likey feel different about this issue (not judging you).

Overall you make a very good arguement and i respect you for that

It would make sense at that level of thought, but that's not the only factor in terms of costs.

It seems that, on average, the death penalty costs around 48% more than a lifetime jailing.

Agreeing on death penalty make us killers.

THere shouldn't be a death penality, no matter wht the offener did.

So some one who´ve tortured children and brutally killed should only be prisoned but yet not executed?

I think its an awful thing to do to some one and should be band through out all states, and the world for that matter

The japs had the right idea they should give them a dagger to kill themselfs or be put in jail to be some fat mans bitch for the rest of their days.

Thats what should happen to pedo's and other scum anyways, *stares at cruel__machine*.

for some crimes, yes. and by "some crimes" i mean crimes beyond the most darkests, despicable things you could imagine. I actually think that the death penalty is not enough. a quick death with largely no suffering cannot justify the suffering the crimes have caused. I reakon for these type of crimes there should be the punishment of torture. an Eye for an Eye.

Personally, I'm against the death penalty and it shouldn't stand. What if the person didn't actually commit what he/she was charged with, then an innocent person's life would be taken from their loved ones for no reason, while the person who actually did it is still out doing whatever he/she did in the first place? It should only stand if they've done somthing horribly wrong, such as the 9/11 incident, and can be proven it was them who actually committed what they did. Other then that, it should not be allowed. If I ever murdered/raped someone, I'd rather spend a life sentence in prison, rather then knowing the next day you wake up you'll die. I think most people would, and it would most likely give them time to realize the bad things that they did and finally realize it's no good to murder/rape somebody. And to end this up, last death penalty I heard about was death by lethal injection. How wrong is that? Tell me if there is anymore recent ones that are different. Another quick thing, we mainly kill them for being KILLERS. Wouldn't that make us KILLERS ourselves?

Those who take a innocent life out of anger deserve to die.
Those who kill the ones that deserve to be killed (ex. child molestors) deserve to have medals.
Just my opinion, go ahead and flame me, it's not like I'm going to listen to you..

Why? What would that accomplish? Also, you're acting as if such crimes are objectively immoral, when in fact, they're subjective.

but the killers dont deserve to live themselves.
and if they are truely inocent...
i think that the great american government if ur talking about the US
the great american supreme court would catch such a mistake? dont you? this isn't like prison break, where it takes months for some1 to come foward, and any1 that did would be kiled. some1 would come foward and testify just as the guy from secret service did.

Why don't they deserve to live?

Well, why? What will that accomplish beyond fulfilling your petty sense of revenge?

I think it depends entirely on what you did.
If you, for example, raped a little boy, murdered old people, and tortured countless people, you should be killed.

I mean, they wasted OTHER peoples lives, and their own by doing it. I think in the US its a little to severe, but should stand. BUT I don't believe in electric chairs. If it doesn't work first time, you really got yourself hurt and they'll do it again.

I think instead of the death penalty, maybe they should take all funding away from them, and make them laborers in a confined area, with all profits going to the victims.
