Death Penalty

The death penalty is a tough one, but I am for it. Why? Because if you were sentenced to death row, obviously the people felt your crime was so bad that you did not deserve the right to live. It wasn't justice enough to just take your freedom from you.

How many of them had their conviction overturned on appeals? That is why we have the appeals process - to make certain that we do not execute an innocent person. But in some cases it hasn't worked.

I feel that there are just some crimes that the criminals do not deserve to live for. If there is absolutely no chance of change, and they are just too far gone to "save", then just send them on their merry way to hell, where they belong. The punishment would be more fitting for them there.

All "child lovers" people who rape children shouldface the death penalty immediately.

Some people say the prisoners in jail should have every right that a person living outside the prison does. In my opinion, these people have proven that they do not deserve to live in society and therefore should not be afforded the same rights and priveliges. I believe that the tax payers, who pay to have a person supported while in jail, are wasting their money. Prisoners are demanding more and more everyday, costing tax payers more and more money.

The obvious solution, to me, is to cut down on the luxuries afforded to inmates. Cut out anything that is not necessary for them to survive. Feed them and give them a toilet, a cot, and a shower and let them deal with it. This would reduce the cost per prisoner and make it more affordable to have criminals spend their lives in jail rather than be put to death.

Just an idea, but I think it would be better than taking the risk of an innocent person being murdered.

I agree, tax payers shouldn't if they have commited any crime they deserve to suffer for it.

OMG.. I can't believe you said that, how would the you know what the victims family wants? In a lot of cases, the DA's that prosecute the case wouldn't seek the death penalty if the victims family didn't want it. There are so many appropriate times when the death penalty should be given out. I don't get why anyone would want killers and rapists sitting in our prisons, prisons might be bad, but they're definitely not torture! If you're mother got murdered, and you didn't want the murderer to be put to death, you think they actually would? Whether the death penalty is used or not is largely in the victims hands(in usa at least).
I highly doubt if one of your mothers got murdered, you would defend the murderer. And for you people that say tons of innocent people are sentenced to death, you get 3 appeals... and you would have to have a lot of evidence piled up against you to deserve it and be found guilty in the first place. It's not as though the government decides if your guilty, it gets decided by a jury of your peers.
And to those of you that said if they die, they can't atone for there sins... What do you expect them to do in prison? Unless you mean they need be let back out.. but that would have to be the worst idea ever.. reconviction rates were 44% in 03, but that increases drastically when the first conviction was violent. Another reason I believe the death penalty should stay is because many more people may (or may not, they might be crazy?) think that they could kill there boss and everyone at there workplace, then sit in prison.

The death penalty also makes for a heavy bargaining chip when trying to obtain information from criminals. Say some guy kidnaps your 10 year old sister and molests her, the police catches the kidnapper but can't find your sister. Getting life in prison instead of being put to death might be what makes him tell them where your sister is at. And trust me, that exact scenario has happened. Just google it, you'll find countless articles.
too bad all states don't have the death penalty, a lot of people just get extradited to a state with the death penalty though =)

This is madness. How can none of you see that the death penalty merely accomplishes a petty sense of revenge? Are you all truly so blind to the fact that it will accomplish NO MATERIAL GAIN WHATSOEVER?

I support the death penalty for these people: Serial pedarists, serial rapists , serial killers.
Any one who offends multiple times with a serious crime.
My reasons why? becouse these people always seem to get let out.
Take leonard john frazer for example, spent 36 total years in prison for serial rape and kept getting let out, eventually he killed a 9 year old girl in broad daylight and got cought, they have now linked many other murders to him..
If he was taken out of society and put down like the dog that he is there would be at LEAST 10 woman still alive, estimates have been as high as 60.
And heres the end the death penalty serves beyond petty revenge, there is no chance of this scumbag ever being released or breaking out of jail and going on another killing spree, as has happened MANY times.

Not a Bump or grave Dig:

I was just watching a show on Ci.

It was about a women who lost her temper and killed someone in texas.

She was given the Needle .

I don't believe this was the right descision to make and yet there were 1000+ protesters outside the prison before the execution

Well, i doubt they want to kill someone, but if that what they have to do to stop all the shit that goes on, let it be. With cases such as the Bali Bombings i agree with the death penalty, even though it is murder to a certain degree.

Bali Bombers should be tortured for they rest of their miserable lives, they didn't repent what they did. So they can Die in hell

Yet that does not make it right, does it?

It might not be right, but this world will never be right, their is no perfect form of governement, but jealousy and revenge makes people strive for perfection.

I've done countless reports and speaches on this topic. The truth is that it costs a few thousand dollars more to put people down then keep them in jail. A man on death row was schedualled to be executed. He had a heart attack the day before and was revived just so he could be killed the next day. To inject somebody, the needle needs to be cleaned with dozens of peroxides. There are over 20 different chemicals in the lethal injection. But through all of this I think it is a good punishment. If we go through all of this just to kill you, it shows that if you do something, the punishment will be sever. It's used as a deterent mostly.

i havent read all of the first post yet...
but u say that the death penalty is a waste of life..
prison for 50 years to life isn't a waste of life either?
i wouldn't rather serve inprisonment, ide rather go down then spend the next 60 years of my life in misery...
anyways, im for the death penalty, u get what u deserve...you kill people, why should you live yourself?
just my veiws...

I think death penalty is good, it should be done to everyone who murders an innocent human and i bet murders would get to lower numbers when everyone is scared of death penalty.

In the 1972 landmark Supreme Court case of Furman v. Georgia, the death penalty was ruled unconstitutional and was said to be “cruel and unusual” which violates the 8th amendment of the United States constitution. But shortly thereafter in 1976, the supreme court overturned Furman v. Georgia over the supreme court case of Gregg v. Georgia, and ruled that the death penalty was not cruel and unusual. I say this because the death penalty is not established because it will fix the crimes the victim committed, or make people feel better when a murderer dies. It is put in our nation to set an example. If people will fear the penalty for a crime, then they will be less likely to commit it. Why should the government spend valuable tax dollars feeding murderers and rapists when we are trillions of dollars in debt? I believe in the death penalty and am a strong supporter of it, our justice system is not perfect, nor will it ever be. But for now, the death penalty is a positive choice for the security and welfare of our great nation.

I think the death penalty should stand. If someone commits mass homicide or a mass act of terrorism (9/11) then they deserve to die for all of the lives that they have taken.

The thing is, when about to commit a major crime, I'm not sure most people who would have proceeded under threat of life in prison would not proceed under threat of the death penalty.
