Death Penalty

Death Penalty Immoral Even in Takuma's Case

Dear Editor:

Mamoru Takuma, who killed eight children and injured two teachers and thirteen children in June 2001 at Ikeda Primary School in Ikeda, Osaka Prefecture, received the death penalty. He was executed on September 14, 2004, but his death made me think about the death penalty. I strongly believe the death penalty should be abolished.

A criminal’s death can’t atone for his crime. Killing the murderer does not solve the problem or help the victim’s family. Criminals should be kept alive and spend all their lives atoning for the victims.

The death penalty is simply a way for the courts to murder people. Murder is a crime. Why can the courts kill people legally? Killing a killer puts the court on the same moral ground as the killer, so the death penalty is immoral.

Why does the court kill criminals even though killing people does not help anyone? Even if the criminal is killed, the victim can never come back. Killing the criminal is no use.

Also, killing criminals does not decrease the number of crimes. Although the death penalty has not been abolished in Japan, the number of criminals has not decreased. Killing criminals has no meaning.

Criminals can’t atone for their crimes by their death. Killing criminals is immoral even if it is legal. Killing criminals also does not bring back victims. The death penalty helps no one. The death penalty should be abolished.

Sincerely yours,

Tomomi Shinohara .

Macroman... i dont exactly agree with you... killing a single criminal would actualy help, in the case that the criminal would kill again after being relased.

I personally think that we should bring bak Ye Old, And eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth law, where wat you have done to your victim, will be done to you.

If not that then.....GENOCIDE! Kill every bad thinking person! I belive thats wat we should do if the eye for an eye law isnt established. it would make the US a saffer place, because people would be too scared to resort to crime... of course, theyre are downsides... we couldnt exactly call america the land of the free... more like the land of the not killed by pedophiles and serial killers.......yea...

so if you got raped you would want the criminal to be raped aswell?

sounds foolish to me

Lagged so don't blame me for the double posts

Lets put it this way.
If someone killed your dad or mom wouldnt you want them dead?
I personally would.

Death penalty should only be for people who plead guilty or are obviously 100% guilty without doubt, otherwise life in prison.

There was some guy a long time ago who was going to go to jail but because the officer, that arrested him, never read him his rights Americans can easily get of on technicalities.

Lethal injection isn't scary enough we need the guillotine or if you kill someone then u die the same way you killed them.

death penalty should only be for murderers under 18.

so if you got raped you would want the criminal to be raped aswell?
Yes :P

Also, kill everybody that does not think a particular way? You'd have a revolution on your hands immediately. Not to mention killing people is immoral...

True, true, like i said, there are downsides.... major downsides....

Also, i dont get the eye for an eye makes the whole world blind statment...

but to the point, what should we do with criminals then? i mean.... all putting people in jail does is waist our tax money, and if the people get off with a jail sentence for a couple years, would you really want that person put back into soceity? He'll just commit again and he'll be put to the death penalty, or in the case they abolish the death penalty, he be put in jail for life... if he's a rapist, killing him will save one life from being traumatized from rape. if he's a murderer, then your saving one life..... period.

Well, eyes are used for seeing (obviously), and since so many bad things happen in the world every day, that if every single unfortunate mishap were to be retributed, then it would accomplish little other than perpetuating the suffering experienced by the victims.

Well first, the death penalty will not be decided on monetary issues.

Second, it actually costs about $10 million to execute somebody, vs. $400,000 to jail somebody for life.

Third, if somebody was going to be executed, the alternative sentence would not be a "couple" years in prison. It would be 40 to life.

the death penelty is stupid! Olny god should decide the end and plus some ppl would say death is getting out the eazy way! Life in jail gives them the rest of there life to think about where they went wrong!

Agreed, we as humans don't have the authority to decide when someones life should end. Its not u to us.

This is simple. Death is something that occurs naturally anyway, we should let those that inflicted such pain and suffering spend their lives *hopefully* regretting all that he/she has done.

Don't you think killing someone who has killed would be a little hypocritical anyway? Also, about the taxes...The Federal Reserve System has been doing that since 1913..Also, not to mention that Americans are also paying a hell of a lot of money for a pointless war..Go figure..

~Just my opinion..XD

Overall giving the person the chance to repent what they have done and and make up for it in some way or maybe just change their lives, as we know life today death is around us all the time but why do some of these people on the with the lowest morals want to take more lives.

A criminal should have a life in prison with parole at any time but it has to be extremely good reason and if he shows bad behaviour his parole should be cancelled for a while.

Its called a corectional system not the we kill everyone who commits a crime,
The idea of the corectionall system is to give them a second chance at life and feel sorry for what they have don, Most criminals commited their crimes while drunk or on drugs, and they wouldn't have done it if it weren't for the drugs.

I stand with the idea that the death penalty is Imorall !

I think the death penalty is immoral as well, because humans aren't perfect, and if we kill anyone who does anything wrong, then they haven't got a chance to be forgiven and become a better person? Or what if they were innocent?

I agree strongly and i don't see why it stands maybe someone should take this to parliment

im from the united kingdom and there is no death penalty which is good i think.

Death sentences are a strong deterrent. It will make most criminals think twice before they murder someone, rape, ect. They'll stop and think "Is this really worth my life? Why am I doing this in the first place?" It imposes doubts on their actions. They know that if they're caught, they die.

Life sentences are good too, because the prisoners must face the same boring existence until they die. But there's always the option that they could break out of jail (Not likely by themselves, but with the help of gang members, family, ect...), and do the crime again.

And sometimes, life-sentences just don't cut it. What if you're a terrorist who just bombed a office building? Killed 100s of innocent lives. And for what reason? They might think that killing people will make their god love them more. They might think they're going it for the greater good. But the fact doesn't change that they killed 100s of innocent lives.

Therefor, the death sentence would make sure that:

a) They didn't have a chance of doing the crime again.

b) Would show other criminals who might have been thinking to do the same thing what would happen to them.

c) Give the families of the victims a sense of "petty" revenge. It would reassure them. If someone murdered your mom for example, wouldn't you feel better if the murderer died? I would.

So my thoughts are - Death penalty is good, but you need unarguable evidence.

Not really. Such crimes are impulsive, and anyway, in the mind of a criminal, there isn't much difference between life in jail, and 15 years on death row.

That is the fault of the prison system.

So, what would killing them accomplish? Terrorists usually get maximum security prisons, ones that are quite difficult to break out of.

First, our justice system is not based upon revenge. Second, they would then harbor the bitterness in their hearts for the rest of their lives.

I think that they should get life in jail but if they are still a threat to kill them. But if they killed like 30 people and it has been proven that they killed all of those people then they should get the death sentence because I think they should have what they were doing to so many others.

But that will accomplish NOTHING! And it would make you a bit of a hypocrite, because if ending human life is so terrible, why would you do it to them?
