Death Penalty Immoral Even in Takuma's Case
Dear Editor:
Mamoru Takuma, who killed eight children and injured two teachers and thirteen children in June 2001 at Ikeda Primary School in Ikeda, Osaka Prefecture, received the death penalty. He was executed on September 14, 2004, but his death made me think about the death penalty. I strongly believe the death penalty should be abolished.
A criminal’s death can’t atone for his crime. Killing the murderer does not solve the problem or help the victim’s family. Criminals should be kept alive and spend all their lives atoning for the victims.
The death penalty is simply a way for the courts to murder people. Murder is a crime. Why can the courts kill people legally? Killing a killer puts the court on the same moral ground as the killer, so the death penalty is immoral.
Why does the court kill criminals even though killing people does not help anyone? Even if the criminal is killed, the victim can never come back. Killing the criminal is no use.
Also, killing criminals does not decrease the number of crimes. Although the death penalty has not been abolished in Japan, the number of criminals has not decreased. Killing criminals has no meaning.
Criminals can’t atone for their crimes by their death. Killing criminals is immoral even if it is legal. Killing criminals also does not bring back victims. The death penalty helps no one. The death penalty should be abolished.
Sincerely yours,
Tomomi Shinohara .
