Why do people care about what religion somebody is? Why not just say "to each his own" and that be the end of it? How come the popular thing to do on the internet is to try and debunk each others faith? Why can't people just live their own lives and not worry about how others live theirs?

Answer that shit, home boys.

People like being right, and they like to make other people think they are right.

That shit has been answered.

But trying to prove yourself right when the topic is something that cannot be proven seems rather stupid..

I agree, yet people do it because they so desire to be right by all means necessary. The only real proof in any argument is that an argument cannot be truly won without proof.

To be honest, I like to know why people choose to believe in things that there is no proof for. I acknowledge the fact that nobody knows for sure if there is a god or not. At the end of the day, I truly don't care, but a part of me is concerned that there is millions out there that believe in what another human being told them without any proof to back up what he's saying. Not to mention all the violence religion brings (both towards non-believers or other religions).

I don't debate to prove that I'm right. I like to debate to learn something new, or teach others something new. I actually enjoy losing debates as I learn a lot from them.

It doesn't matter what the person believes in. The burden of proof is on the one challenging their beliefs. In this case, no proof can be given so to start a debate is foolish.

Evaluate this statement as well: "a part of me is concerned that there is millions out there that believe in what another human being told them without any proof to back up what he's saying."

I understand what you're saying, and I actually feel the same way about most topics. But when the topic is something that cannot be proven either way, no matter which side you choose, you're still believing what people tell you without any proof. Also, what constitutes as proof of anything?

And if it weren't religion causing wars, it would be something else.

Agreed.

Tuche. I stand corrected, and I have lost the debate of this topic. I agree with you completely, and I'm glad to have been wrong.

You are right. Trying to question something that is purely illogical with logic is a waste of time.

That's true for any cause of war. That doesn't mean that we shouldn't try to prevent it from happening.

I don't think you understood me. It is not illogical for one to believe in a higher power and it is not illogical for one to not believe in a higher power. What's illogical is trying to argue for one side or the other considering the fact that there is no proof of either.

Prevent war how? By forcing people to not believe in a higher power?

Tuche. I stand corrected, and I have lost the debate of this topic. I agree with you completely, and I'm glad to have been wrong.

But that's also not saying that you're original answer isn't true for a large percentage of people. It goes both ways really because people will argue over anything and for any reason, some reasons are just better than others.

The current "belief" of god as set by most religions is illogical. The concept of an omnipotent being that can do anything is illogical. It is also illogical that this said being would send its creations to burn for all eternity.

One can believe anything they want. Just not act irrationally and immorally because of it.

This is not a debate about whether or not a higher power exists, but rather why people feel the need to debate over it. What you replied to first ("I don't think you understood...) was a statement, so do you agree or disagree with what I said? It's not about what we see as logical or not, it's why do we feel the need to debate over it when there is no solid proof for either side?

I'm aware of "all the violence religion brings" as you put it, but what exactly do you propose we do to stop it? If you don't mind me making a suggestion, I suggest people just stop caring what others believe in. Then there would be no reason to argue about it. That's sort of the thread topic in itself, why does religion cause so much disagreement? Why can't people just let it be?

On a side note, if you believe in the multiverse theory, wouldn't that mean that somewhere and at some time there was an omnipotent being that created everything exactly as it was written in the bible? (of course taking into account that there is an infinite number of possibilities and everything that can happen has or will happen)

I'm not sure if I'm getting the point of that last paragraph across, but hopefully you get the idea. In an infinite universe, everything is possible. That being said, nothing is illogical.

Yeah I completely agree with you. It is illogical to us now at this point in time because we have no real understanding of it, no proof of it, anything. Until it makes sense to us, it's illogical. But yeah, anything goes really. For all we know there are parallel universes and such. We don't know for sure, but I'm not going to settle for what organized religion currently tells us. Also, on your point of "not caring" if we just don't care about what happens and what others believe in, then those who do believe and cause these wars will just trample over the ones who don't care. If no one cared about what others believed in and got along, then great, I couldn't care less if they choose to believe in a flying dildo that shits rainbows. Sadly, we don't live in a world like this, we are divided into all these stupid groups and it causes many problems (that's a whole different debate).

People bash religion because it's an easy route, and sometimes actually relates to the debate of God's existence.

It's like, instead of taking the effort to scientifically prove evolution theory in a debate, why don't we just bash our next alternative - creationism, which postulates silly hypotheses such as the Earth being only 6,000 years old. It shouldn't be too hard to prove the Earth is more than 6,000 years old now, should it? By doing this, evolution theory appears more credible.

Well we would care what the individuals do, but not about their religious beliefs. You can still jail somebody for a crime no matter what they believe in. What's the alternative? Take away their religious freedom and punish insubordination?

Exactly. I don't think religions can really start hate/wars. They're just a very good excuse. This isn't something contemporary either, people have been killing/hurting other people for thousands of years using that excuse. You always need a reason to start a fight/war.

More on topic: I agree with "to each his own", but I still think it's my right to think they're simpleminded for believing in a higher power. They're obviously free to think the same of me for not believing in it.

I'm not religious myself...

But I guess people who are religious have ideas which clash with other religions so they argue it out saying why their religion is best blah blah. I have nothing against religious people and follow the rule what you say, "each to their own". If they want to follow, or believe in something then let them!

Going back to my point earlier about clashing opinions; some people say the world was created by "God", where as other believe it was created through science. That's just one example. These sorts of things can spark up a debate, and over thousands of years religion has split up so much and you can imagine all of the different beliefs and stories. It's inevitable really. I do support your point that someone shouldn't put somebody else down though just because they believe in something.

It annoys me though when people try to preach and breathe their religion down your neck. They should respect that and follow, "each to their own" that some people don't have specific beliefs.

Good topic really mate :)

Because they care about others' salvation and have been tricked into thinking that religion matters by those wishing to exploit them.

Because religious majorities govern in a democratic society.

I don't think either of you read the op lol

You are right. Trying to question something that is purely illogical with logic is a waste of time.

Where would we be if we didn't ask these questions?

"Question with boldness even the existence of a god; because if there be one he must approve of the homage of reason more than that of blindfolded fear."

I'm a usual live and let live type of guy, but once someone religious tells me how things should be governed ( specifically because their doctrine says so ) or how morality should be viewed, then I feel the implicit need to check the validity of the bases of their claims.

This is why I care about religion.
