I honestly didn't expect TTB to be on that list :S
I honestly had all the pieces to figure out it wasn't real, but for some strange reason I never put it together :S

Frankly, Shinoda's original sting was much more successful in terms of the names it caught, but I don't see anything wrong with trying. Even law enforcement uses the same tactic, in certain situations.

Not seeing how it makes the staff disgraceful, childish, untrustworthy, etc.

Really that is so stupid because if their is a thread claiming to just refund people what they post they have been scammed with a bit of proof and someone does it, does that make them a bad person? You were basically asking people to do that and it was really dick move and really completely fucking stupid.

"Begging" (or, more appropriately, asking directly for donations) is allowed only in the Spam Forum. N4N0's announcement was to alert people that his MSN was hacked, not to ask for donations. ;)

The thread was to entrap scammers & it did so it was a sucess

When in prison exicution is to exicute prisoners even if it goes horribly
wrong once the prisoners end up dead it is a sucess.

So the trap was a sucess.

People would only have done it if they had been scammed or wanted to pretend to be scammed, which they did. They faked a scam and used this event to hopefully gain some undeserved form of payment. All that were banned deserved 100% to be banned, and I respect the staff for doing something like this.

Of course - all human beings are dishonest in one way or another. I'm sure if many of the staff members of Sythe saw an opportunity that they believed to be a 100% sure way of earning easy money, they would jump on the opportunity. It's a simple fact of human nature. Perhaps the staff believe they're standing on some moral high ground by pulling off such a "sting" and exposing members of the community as dishonest, but if members of the staff were faced with a similar, only more plausible situation, with similar (or higher) amounts to gained, I would think that many of them would succumb to greed also.

Maybe your idea that "anyone would claim to be scammed if they really wanted money" says more about your moral compass than about ours.

Personally, I'd never seek to profit by stealing money from someone after they'd been hacked.

I think you're missing the point Viou wants to make. The whole argument here is essentially do the ends justify the means. Does catching scammers justify the way you catch them. The community as a whole wants scammers gone. You, the staff, obviously executed this to get rid of potential scammers. This is the end of the argument, catching scammers. It's how you got it that some members have problems with.

The way you went about obtaining your result can be considered many things. It could be considered from fantastic, to fraudulent. Clearly there is a bifurcate over the interpretations of the events that have transpired. It is entirely irrelevant to say that scammers have been reduced therefore this method is justified, that's just a tautology. The moral compunction some people have is the way you went about it. Clearly, it should be noted to the Sythe staff that some members will actively scorn the methodology used if they find it unethical, namely, the deception.

The question I think some would like answered is: why do you think this method is justifiable?

For me personally, I don't find any real problem with the method, but I can see how people find the deception in staff distasteful.

I actually had a hunch something was up, not with Govind though, but on the first post stating that "all who have been scammed will get reimbursed and such" was pretty weird, and i guess provoking as well.

I'm really disappointed that Time To Buy is on the list.

This was a smart idea, it caught people who were up to no good, and probably going to scam later on.

Guys, anyone who is willing to lie and be dishonest about something is eventually going to be a scammer. You need to remember your morals and claiming to be scammed is just as good as scamming. As Sin666 said law enforcement also use similar techniques to catch or gather evidence on criminals.

To be honest, a much smarter way of weeding out scammers, (and more effective) would be to do something about the 90%+ of accounts that are hacked back, to do something about all of the newcomer's who try and buy large amounts of gold for ridiculously high prices in the buying section who won't use OMM's or go first to trusted members.

Not this, this didn't even necessarily catch scammers. Just people presented with a TGTBT situation and tried to capitalize on it.

Neither would I, but that doesn't mean that you wouldn't steal in another way. Even the revered N4N0 has scammed in the past. Beating a dead horse? Yes. He needed money and he scammed. Moral compasses align differently at different points in life.
