Marrying cousins.

Is marrying a cousin/relative Okay?

I think they should be allowed to, but I'm not going to do so. It's their choice to marry as it is my choice not to marry a cousin.

Edit: I'm not sure why people are calling it 'nasty'. I really want to know why you think that? 45th cousins are very far apart, but they are cousins. I firmly, firmly believe that certain religions are corrupting true morality. I'll use Christianity as an example for this. In the Bible, as the OP stated, it is not against anything to marry a cousin, on the other hand, many preachers are on a war path to end this. It's strange how gullible people are.
There are gay priests. I think we can agree that the Bible isn't relevant anymore.

In Australian Aboriginal culture families were made up of second cousins, for example, two families of males and females, the kids are all second cousins. what happens is they ALL get married. Like a group marriage, generally they have their "husband" but the other guys and girls are also their partners, this means that if their REAL husband was too die the rest would care for them. This worked well for aboriginals and over the many years they figured out that the risk of mutation due too genetic defect was low in second cousins.

i personally feel that it should be legal i mean a marriage certificate is only a piece of paper which says that your GOVERNMENT sees you as a couple. If the government wont let people they dont care. they can just write up their own fake one and have a fake wedding and stuff. I am sick of people trying too teach me how too live my life

if i wanted too (which i dont) marry my cousin it is my choice and no-one elses. But on the whole i think marriage needs too be played in a different light. i hate it. women stealing all ya money (well halfish) plus the rest if you have kids, love slowly being drained, its horrible.

I agree with DarkSpark, a marriage certificate is only a piece of paper which the government sees you as an official couple. While its nice to have, you can still have a marriage like relationship without the governments recognition, nothing should come between love not even the government. I think family members should support this too, as we all know several of them would be against it.

it should be ok.

What can a poll say it's god's work.
IF we go about adam and eva we are all family.

I think it's perfectly fine. If they really do love each other like that, then why not? Even if the chances were 100% something would be terribly wrong with the child, they could just adopt.

Regardless of their relationship, whether it be a long time friend of perhaps someone in the family - they have the right to marry each other. I don't see it as weird at all. Of course, it might cause some family issues but if that specific person is in love I'd say to give it a shot.

Nah i can't imagine how people can do this...it's sick and dirty.

I do dissagree with your statistics, with regards to children being born deformed due to the affects of general smoking. I believe you said if you smoke your child has a 20% chance of being born deformed? so 1 in 5. I know multiple parents who smoke and have given birth the perfectly healthy children.

The population of england is around 61 million. 22% of its population smoke so around 12.4 million smoke. Use your 20 % data on chances of having deformed children being a smoker that makes 2.4 million. Half that to get the birth estimate and you have 1.2 million deformed children in england as a result of smoking. thats abosolute toff if you ask me :P

I believe your data charts are not accurate at all.

but with regards to the argumen, if two people love one another that much they should have the right to do what they want, not to let society an peer pressure control there actions.

Good topic!

I see an interesting conflict here. In the thread about gay marriage you say no because it is not natural. Here, you leave it to choice despite the fact that mating with close relatives is not natural either.

Why is the natural order less relevant here than in the other topic?

I really dont know where I stand....I can see both point of views :X

I personally wouldn't. Due to the fact that your RELATED to them.

But I can see a good argument for both sides.

But marrying someone you may have grown up with? I think it's wrong.

Why is it wrong to like someone you're related to? It's just someone you share a common trait with, and may see them more than usual.

It may or may not be wrong. That is just my opinion. The thought of marrying your parents brothers/sisters child is disturbing. :S

My data is very accurate, birth deformities are more common than you think. Your thinking about a retarded person probably, deformities can fall under the category of missing digits, a brain deformity (like Einstein), retardation, and several others. Its very common actually, out of the people you know that smoke and have perfectly healthy children, it is only a small fraction of the smoking population and since its 1:5 then 4:5 are bound to be healthy. Some of them might have a deformity that isnt noticeable. My data is accurate, I suggest you visit the website I posted. Thanks for contributing to this thread.

It is wrong because you need to add fresh genes to the gene pool. Close relatives are more likely to share harmful recessive genes, and it's therefore more likely to have a child with these genetic problems.

Lol of course, any traits at all, are worse than having none, but that doesn't mean they can't like each other? Just because what they're baby MIGHT be, doesn't make their relationship wrong.

It is wrong because it goes against the natural order of things. Animals in the wild will not mate with their close family, that's a fact. There is a reason for that, and the reason is that a diverse gene pool benefits the species. Parade free will all you want, that's not how it's supposed to work.
