I could go into a long winded reason why marijuana should be legal, along with all drugs, I've even written a paper on it, which can be found (in basic form) here - http://www.sythe.org/showpost.php?p=2841770&postcount=10

But rather than waste my intellect on a forum wher 80% of the users are too ignorant to appreciate it (sorry guys but it's true... I know many of you are smart, but many, many of you are not) I figure I will just give you idiots who claim that "marijuana is illegal because the government can't tax it" some info.

Do you buy your tomatoes at the store? Your carrots and other grown goods? Hell yes, the majority of you aren't going to wait weeks for something to grow when it's available at your local store and relatively cheap too. Marijuana takes months to grow, and even then it must be prepared and kept properly, it's a fuckload of work.

Do you really think that the government would be unable to tax the sale of weed? If legalization did take place, you bet your ass the government would be the first to set up a state owned and operated business to mass produce marijuana for sale in stores. Not only would it be taxed, it'd be government owned. This mean that the marijuana would be extremely well made, as it would be produced properly by a company using proper equipment and settings, but also it would be free of any unwanted ingredients that may have contaminated weed on occasion while illegal.

There are numerous arguments for the legalization of weed, and I totally support it, but if you think the only reason that it is not legal is because the government can't make any money from it, you're an idiot.

I wasnt going to dignify this thread with a post, but...

No, it shouldnt. What is one positive outcome to making it legal? Getting your hands on pot isnt hard anyway, Those who want to smoke pot do, and will, and dont care about it being illegal, or infact rather it that way so they can make a dollar.

Making pot legal will make kids think its not so bad, that its ok to smoke it. Its ok to try it, to do it every blue moon, but if you do it all the time, Youl be in a mental home. Would you want then next generation to be a bunch of pot head low lifes?

/Sarcasm.

I bet you just ignored my post showing how detrimental it is to your mental status. Allow me to repost it:
Marijuana is linked to forms of Schizophrenia and Psychosis. It's illegal because it fucks you up, not because the Government can't tax it.

Do your homework first.

Also some more interesting info :

La cucaracha, la cucaracha
Ya no puede caminar
Porque no tiene, porque le falta
Marijuana que fumar

^ We all know this funny song ... But what does it mean ?
cockroach , cockroach ,
he cannot travel ,
Because he wants , because he needs
to smoke marijuana <- written by Francisco "Pancho" Villa in 1915

Actually it means :
The Cockroach, The Cockroach
Now he can't walk.
Because he doesn't have, because he's missing
Marijuana to smoke.

And I'm not going to get into this stupid argument.
I think it should stay illegal.

And what is one positive outcome of the legalization of cigarettes and tobacco?

While we are at it, what are the positive outcomes of KFC... or McDonalds? Both these foods do much, much more harm, health-wise, than good, yet they are totally legal?

In reality, products like these are no different from marijuana in the fact that when used moderately and for occasional enjoyment, have minimal to no harm, but when abused, cause sickness and health issues, though for some reason marijuana is outlawed, but not fast foods?

It's idiocy.

Sort of off-topic, but there was actually a documentary on how to lose weight by ONLY eating McDonalds a while back. It was interesting.

Regarding cigarettes and tobacco, I believe they should be illegal. However, when you look at the amount of smokers in any country, if one government comes up with an anti-smoking policy, they're going to be pretty unpopular very fast.

Yes but the fact still stands that cigarettes, tobacco, plus the fast foods, and all these other damn products or goods that have no actual use except to provide pleasure are totally legal, yet marijuana gets the hard end of the stick. It's like outlawing football because it is too violent, but still allowing wrestling, boxing or any other contact sport. It's stupid and unfair.

If they legalized it, there would just be another problem to deal with. Besides, doesn't the majority of congress have to agree before the law is changed (I'm not a US citizen, I don't know).

Hahahahha you guys just want to get high its all good just spark up a blunt and forget about it

yes... and no.. b/c doctors use marijuana and steroids for patients and can prescribe... but no one should use it just to use it

1. It is perceived as addictive.
Under the Controlled Substances Act of 1970, marijuana is classified as a Schedule I drug on the basis that is has "a high potential for abuse." What does this mean? It means that the perception is that people get on marijuana, they get hooked and become "potheads," and it begins to dominate their lives. This unquestionably happens in some cases. But it also happens in the case of alcohol--and alcohol is perfectly legal. In order to fight this argument for prohibition, legalization advocates need to make the argument that marijuana is not as addictive as government sources claim.

2. It has "no accepted medical use."
Marijuana seems to yield considerable medical benefits for many Americans with ailments ranging from glaucoma to cancer, but these benefits have not been accepted well enough, on a national level. Medical use of marijuana remains a serious national controversy. In order to fight the argument that marijuana has no medical use, legalization advocates need to highlight the effects it has had on the lives of people who have used the drug for medical reasons.

3. It has been historically linked with narcotics, such as heroin.
The first piece of federal legislation to formally regulate marijuana was the Narcotics Act of 1914, which regulated heroin, cocaine, and marijuana. The only trouble is that cocaine and marijuana are not technically narcotics; the word "narcotic," when used in English, has historically referred to opium derivatives such as heroin and morphine. But the association stuck, and there is a vast gulf in the American consciousness between "normal" recreational drugs, such as alcohol, caffeine, and nicotine, and "abnormal" recreational drugs, such as heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamine. Marijuana is generally associated with the latter category, which is why it can be convincingly portrayed as a "gateway drug."

4. It is associated with unfashionable lifestyles.
Marijuana is often thought of as a drug for hippies and losers. Since it's hard to feel enthusiastic about the prospects of enabling people to become hippies and losers, imposing criminal sanctions for marijuana possession functions as a form of communal "tough love."

5. It was once associated with oppressed ethnic groups.
The intense anti-marijuana movement dovetailed nicely with the intense anti-Chicano movement. Marijuana was associated with Mexican Americans, and a ban on marijuana was seen as a way of discouraging Mexican-American subcultures from developing. Today, thanks in large part to the very public popularity of marijuana among whites during the 1960s and 1970s, marijuana is no longer seen as what one might call an ethnic drug--but the groundwork for the anti-marijuana movement was laid down at a time when marijuana was seen as an encroachment on the U.S. majority-white culture.

6. Inertia is a powerful force in public policy.
If something has been banned for only a short period of time, then the ban is seen as unstable. If something has been banned for a long time, however, then the ban--no matter how ill-conceived it might be--tends to go unenforced long before it is actually taken off the books. Take the ban on sodomy, for example. It hasn't really been enforced in any serious way since the 18th century, but most states technically banned same-sex sexual intercourse until the Supreme Court ruled such bans unconstitutional in Lawrence, Texas. People tend to be comfortable with the status quo--and the status quo, for nearly a century, has been a literal or de facto federal ban on marijuana.

7. Advocates for marijuana legalization rarely present an appealing case.
To hear some advocates of marijuana legalization say it, the drug cures diseases while it promotes creativity, open-mindedness, moral progression, and a closer relationship with God and/or the cosmos. That sounds incredibly foolish, particularly when the public image of a marijuana user is, again, that of a loser who risks arrest and imprisonment so that he or she can artificially invoke an endorphin release. A much better argument for marijuana legalization, from my vantage point, would go more like this: "It makes some people happy, and it doesn't seem to be any more dangerous than alcohol. Do we really want to go around putting people in prison and destroying their lives over this?"
Please excuse the length of the post, I had a point to make. =]

Two words: Schizophrenia, Psychosis.

Read the entire topic, or at least parts of it first

They definitely should legalize.

I (used to, Drug tests every week) smoke pretty often and it has no negitive effects on people what so ever in my opinion. And the governemnt is stupid as shit not to legalize, Because they could make money off of it. They can tax the growers and dispensarys .
