Is refusing to donate your organs wrong?

It's not 'wrong' to say no, but personally I believe there should be an opt-out system in place rather than the current opt-in.

Does civil liberties mean anything to you?

Is it not wrong to refuse to donate. But personally, why wouldn't you? Youre not going to need them anymore.

If I died, they can have my organs. When I'm dead it wont matter at all if I have organs will it?

There is plenty wrong with your statement. Wouldn't the moral value of the deed depend on the moral character of the person to whom the organ is being given?

Because it is treated as a will or contract. They can now unhook you from life-support ("whoops, he died") and sell ("give") your organs without legal consequences. And yes there is a huge organ blackmarket.

It wasn't a statement, it was an opinion. I feel you are very close minded and stubborn, not willing to open your eyes to other possible beliefs.

I feel you are very close minded and stubborn, not willing to open your eyes to other people's values, or reason and evidence for that matter.

It's wonderful that we all have feelings.

Incidentally this isn't an opinion forum. If you make a statement you can expect it to be put through the wringer of scientific scrutiny.

We can just agree to have different beliefs then as we both have reasoning behind both of ours.

We can agree to have different values. All beliefs are not equal, however. If they were then there would be no point in debate or discussion. By engaging in a debate or a forum for debate, you accept the supremacy of reason and thereby subjugate your opinions to that standard.

I do not wish to give away my organs, in the event of a fatal crash, due to I find it somewhat unnatural having my kidney or my liver in someone else's body, even if they do need it, im sure their are other donor's.

Sure I would. Not that it's selfish not to do so but just because I doubt I would need them when I die and I'm sure someone else will.

Refusing to donate your organs is right under the correct context.

Organs are a precious resource, and there are plenty of crooked people in the medical field (along with every field) that will harvest them and sell them to the highest bidder. However, this paranoia of society is unhealthy, growing up to trust no one leaves you alone, longing, and somewhat insane. It is a good idea to be aware of the widespread corruption on Earth.

If I am about to die, and my little diabetic brother needs a pancreatic transplant, by all means take mine. However, I will not have my dead body rummaged through for parts. I am a human, not a junked car, bodies should not be salvaged for organs that will go to the highest bidder. If I make a conscious decision of what organs go to what people, then it is alright, otherwise I do not want to save a corporatist's son or a junkie living off socialized hospital care.

As with all rational and autonomous people, ownership of one's body belongs to the pertinent individual. It does not belong to other people, does not belong to the government, and does not belong to 'God', who, incidentally, is a paradoxical concept.

Though I personally would donate my organs after my death, given that I do not value a carcass and its components, it is the individual's choice - whilst living - as to what happens to their property after their death. This includes their body and organs.

Just as a person may leave a will or testament transferring ownership of property and capital after their death, organs should be dealt with similarly. If no such dictation is given, the organs have no owner and thus can be used by anyone that possesses them (in any way, whether sold, eaten or whatever else). Incidentally, I do not support the illegality of organ selling.

Does civil liberties mean anything to you?
Yes it does, but what possible reason could a secular person have for not donating their organs?

And besides, I never suggested donation be compulsory. Anyone who has an objection could opt out at any point, and the final decision still rests with next of kin.

Organs and monetary possessions are an entirely separate concern. What need do your descendants have of your organs?

And on a separate note, is not slightly rich that the same people who consistently bemoan the failings of universal healthcare are also the last to try and do anything about it? You wax lyrical of the evils of the organ black market, yet refuse to even consider the one action that could see it stopped.

So your refusal is merely motivated by your hatred of anyone higher or lower than you in the class spectrum.

Furthermore, your body will not be 'rummaged for parts'. I have seen the organ donation system first hand, you would be surprised at how little is taken after someone has died. To begin with, the patient must have died at a hospital (ie not at home or the scene of an accident), and most importantly there has to be a compatible patient ready to take the organ immediately. As a result of this, many people who have agreed to be donors never have anything taken at all.

No, I want to keep mine. Just not comfortable giving my organs away (even tho I'm dead)

Some people beleive that you go to the "afterlife" the way you get buried, meaning if they take your organs you're screwed, i personally don't but i still think its fine to deny giving them my organs.

It occurs to me that this is a debate over altruism more than anything.

For example: why should my moral right to be buried whole (or burned whole, as the case may be) be contingent on the current physical state of any others?

Are the festering wounds of others blank cheques drawn against my person to such a degree that my death cannot void these cheques?

Consider, if you can, what type of evil it is, you, who support this thing as a "moral good", are proposing.

Essentially, under this moral code, not even in death are you freed from your obligations to others. It is now not only a sin to exist (as in original sin), but in-fact a sin to maintain the substance of one's body in its natural form!

I would only donate Organs if they were to be sent to the person who needed them most and not the one with the most mony.

Although due to my beliefs i find it wrong not to donate, I will not impose my judgment upon others. Not donating organs is the persons choice and i do not think that the media or any political group should make the decision for the individual.

I do not think that I would donate my organs if I were prompted with such a question as this. I do not think that it is stingy, greedy, or wrong, because they are, in fact, your own organs. Yes, there are people that need them, but I feel that we have the right to do with our organs as we please. This is why some abuse drugs, others prostitute themselves, and others ride motorcycles.
