I haven't read the entire thread but I've been that person once or twice literally only because I wasn't in the right financial situation at the time. Even now I don't earn as much money as one of my friends who buys me lunch and things sometimes. I can't afford paying for two people. He knows that though, he's just being a cool guy. He knows that I'm good for my word if I borrow money at least. I always pay back the next day. He knows I'll be able to be more generous once I start earning more too.

I don't know your full situation, OP, but maybe your friend is like me and just doesn't earn as much as everyone else?

I agree with Blupig. I've been in that situation before as well with a mate of mine. He's from a wealthy family and most of the time, he treats/pays for the both of us but whenever I can, I would pay but sometimes I can't because I'm not financially well off. I guess he knows that and he just shrugs it off. I've known the guy for years though, I guess he knows I have no other motive.

I've also came across people who are plain out greedy. This one guy expects me to buy drinks and stuff for him whenever we're hanging out. Always says he's broke when he ISN'T. I have no problem treating the guy when I can but don't lie straight to my face.
