Detective user group

This has been discussed with @Shin and asked that a suggestion is made to advocate for the rules to be changed.

Simple suggestion: Allow a small group of users to have limited access to private information in a public setting in front of staff. Please read my expansion on Private Information.

Reasoning: There are a substantial amount of ban evaders that have been caught using some of these methods. We have been reminded that this is against the rules and thus unable to use these methods to find ban evaders. Some users enjoy catching these individuals, without access to these methods a large amount of evaders which would once be caught will get by.

Private information will be limited to:

-Home or VPN check
(Example: Is .96 a home match or VPN)


The significance of this question is to confirm if the users are actually the same person or just on public wifi/VPN.

-Do these two users have a location match. Yes or No.
(Example: A new user posts a thread on the Max Main Rental Service section with no IP Audit matches (Home IP as well), yet shares identical characteristics of a serial ban evader. The user most likely is using a new computer, which means there will be no matches besides geolocation)

The private information that will be discussed and used is vague, knowing if someone is on a Home IP or VPN grants little knowledge. In fact, its already done here: Home IP TWCs a little bit of cross referencing and you can figure out which is a Home IP.

The geolocation match is a bit more invasive, but the actual location is withheld from this user group and only seen by Staff.

As @Shin has outlined, the rules are in place to protect user data and privacy. This would relinquish a small amount of privacy but in return grant the ability to catch these users with ease. As it currently stands this type of report is against the rules.

Requirements: To start off, I am not good at making requirements. These are a few I feel would be necessary for someone to join this user group.
-Registered on Sythe.org for at least 1 year.
-Two Factor Authentication enabled.
-Users must be in good standing. TWC, DNT, outstanding debt are ineligible to apply.
-Users must have shown knowledge in the RaS section.
-Detective minirank (50 accepted reports)

I'm sure these can be discussed in more detail but this would be the majority of the requirements.

You stated that Shin asked for this suggestion to be made so I wont auto deny this on the basis of dns list because I'm assuming the former to be true.


In terms of the suggestion itself no support. I dont think the potential benfits are worth it.

 

1. Your personal IP will never be viewed by anyone apart of this, only staff. Asking if someones IP Audit is a home IP or VPN doesn't release this information.
2. There is no power gained here, just people that enjoy catching ban evaders being able to continue doing that.

 

I believe his suggestion is not to release IP addresses to the "detective" group but rather, to have the ability to ask staff members whether the IP is a home IP match or not.

I'm currently talking to Pendulum in discord pms, will update my decision on my stance of this suggestion.

 

To reiterate, your IP is never released. A yes or no question is answered to see if the user on your public IP Audit is a home IP match or not.

 

I'll let @Shin answer this as he's been reiterating that doing so is not allowed, as it's a form of policing.

You would still have to bother admins/mods about IP matches as you'd have no access to that information. He's suggesting that we allow the ability to ask mods without a valid report.

Correct.
When inquiring about a user, you have to have reason (probable cause), sometimes this is not the case.

Example: A user gets banned for scamming, 4 months later creates a new account on the same IP with no posts. There is no evidence to link them together besides their IP Audit. As mentioned in [READ THIS] Template for reporting a Ban Evader

Asking and then confirming if it is a home IP match is condemning evidence that the user in question is ban evading.

 

This could be abused in so many ways lol

It's not an extra perk, so many ban evaders are banned as a result of home IP confirmations. This has been going on for a long time.

Might I add that the sudden "oh that's not allowed according to this rule" is not only pedantic, but childish.

This has literally no downside, other than a mod being pestered for two minutes of their time.

If you want ban evaders running wild, disallowing it is the way to go!

 

Mistakes and wasting staff time is never something that happens either, right? There's no need to consider the affordances and limitations by your logic as there are no drawbacks. Do you sincerely feel that way? How do you think this affects all community members?
