[denied] Add a "dislike" button

That's a good compromise, and makes perfect sense. I think we would all be happy with that

I much more prefer a non elaborative post compared to some button... kind of reminds me of reddit at that point

I would only support adding this if in the spam forum as that's the only place where it would realistically be used properly.

I think the system is fine as it currently is.

There is a website similar to Sythe that I won't name as to not advertise it. They have a vouch system, but also a separate positive/negative "reputation" system. I would equate it to being relatable to your like/dislike suggestion.

Their rep system is often abused, and legitimate users can be seen with hundreds of cascading negative rep because they are being trolled by others. If someone is led to the site to buy an account, they might think the seller is a scammer or untrustworthy due to illegitimate negative rep.

It's so problematic to moderate that the staff team there doesn't moderate it.

In my opinion, adding a dislike button or system here would just create problems, disputes, and frustration between users on Sythe. People would be unhappy about their posts receiving dislikes, and it would create unnecessary work for the staff team.

 

This suggestion should not be implemented. There's development effort and potential negative ad revenue and user experience impacts.

This dislike button idea would require UI changes, database updates, and testing. With only one developer, this time could be better spent on features that drive more valuable outcomes.

From a business perspective, dislike buttons often reduce user engagement and time spent on the platform, which directly hurts ad revenue. They create negative experiences that make users visit less often or leave sooner. For user experience, dislike buttons make discussions more hostile, discourage participation, and can silence diverse opinions through mob downvoting. The current like system already lets users show support without these downsides.

 

How would you stop groups of users abusing this by targeting individuals/competitors by disliking all their posts - ultimately harming their public image? Furthermore, it could also discourage people from posting which could be more detrimental.

If you can provide a satisfactory answer to the above, I may be inclined to support. However, at the moment for this reason alone I never would support this.

Ideally, we need more engagement as more sections have been declining as the use of the internet has transformed and less people are participating in discussions, events, and pretty much everything else on-site. The first page of some sections have post dates stretching back years, which indicates a significant decline in engagement compared to a decade ago.

 

@Liam see Zulu's suggestion, I have changed my view to: "This should only be implemented in the suggestions/spam sections". Lots of people here have brought up valid opposition/counter points, so I think the only place it would fit would be here. But also see @Superman a few posts up.

Time and resources might be better spent developing other features that are more pertinent to the market section (our main function)

I can think of almost zero benefit to having dislikes.
