What's RAM?
It stands for Random Access Memory. Here is a good definition of it.
Where is it?
Most commonly on the motherboard. I myself have seen RAM slots that were plugged into the motherboard, and not actually on it, but there aren't too many computers like that. RAM is in sticks, thus "sticks of RAM". They sit in slots on your motherboard and are easily pushed/pulled out with two switches, one on each side of the slot which you can push and the RAM will be released.
This is what desktop RAM looks like:
This is what laptop RAM looks like:
Note: Removing RAM in a laptop is a little bit different than from a desktop. In this guide, I'll cover how to change it in a desktop.
Guide time.
^^ That computer has RAM right on the edge of the motherboard. As you can see, there are 4 RAM slots but only 2 are filled. You can also see the switches on each side of the slots. If you push each one, then the RAM will be pushed out of the slot and you can pull it out and place your new RAM in. Be careful where you put RAM, because it's very sensitive to static electricity and will be damaged if exposed to it. Push the new RAM in, and the switches should lock back in place. Voila
Note2: There are different types of RAM. Make sure you have the right kind before trying to change it.
