Bump Button

Hi-

One of the features we've been toying around with for a while is the bump button. It's basically a button on the first post of your threads which you can click to bump the thread. The idea is to keep post spam to a minimum by allowing people to bump without having to post something pointless like "Bumping" or "Online."

Another component of the bump button is that you will be able to bump a thread early (before 8 hours) in exchange for Sythe Gold.

The way the button works is like this:
1. You click the button on the first post in your thread.
2. If it has been 8 hours, your thread is bumped instantly.
3. If it has been less than 8 hours, but more than 6 hours, you are offered a chance to purchase an early bump with Sythe Gold.
4. If you choose to buy a bump, your thread is bumped instantly. If you choose not to buy a bump, you have to wait.

Here's a sample of what the options look like:

This thread is to gather suggestions and feedback on how this button should work and to answer other questions like:
1. Should the bump button only be available in forums which have bump restrictions?
2. In forums without bump restrictions, should bumps be unlimited or still limited to some sort of time frame like 4 hours?
3. When should early bump be available? Currently we're looking at after 6 hours (2 hours early).

Any constructive feedback or comments would be appreciated. We'd like to release this feature, possibly in limited forums, within the next day or two.

 

i'd say 5 hours is a better number but i really like the idea of the bump button

Do you mean the early bump should be after 5 hours or the overall bump timer? Please be specific.

yeah the early bump should be 5 imo, the overall bump timer is fine as it is

Yes. Only the thread's creator can see/use the bump button. But other users can still post of course.

Can't this be abused is some way? For example, using the bump button and also replying to a post or a vouch or something all within 8 hours to somehow get multiple bumps in? It's somewhat hard to explain while typing it..

I assume once you've bumped your thread you can't post on it anymore unless someone else has posted after you bumped, or the other way around, you can't bump your thread if you have already posted on it.

No

I assume once you've bumped your thread you can't post on it anymore unless someone else has posted after you bumped, or the other way around, you can't bump your thread if you have already posted on it.

Correct. If you bump you're the last poster technically, so you won't be able to reply for 8 hours as it would be bumping (unless of course someone else replies).

No, the idea of the bump button would be to use that to bump your thread.

We're doing it based on statistics. Essentially ownership of sythe gold falls in a normal distribution. Remove the outliers (anything more than 3 std deviations from the mean) then sum the remaining gold. This is regarded as gold in circulation. Bumping up to 2 hours early will cost 0.1% of gold in circulation or about 250 sg ATM. We'll adjust this if it proves to be too expensive.

@Sythe 250 sg for 1 early bump is way to expensive. I was thinking like 20 sg- 40 sg max. Considering you only earn 1 sg per post on certain sections only.

He's doing it the most logical way, if it was 20 sg no one would ever leave the front page, this is a competitive market place and those who swim will eat.
