I was jsut thinking about this. As much as a lot of kids hate the thought of it, your parents very much influence you. A parents who got low grades in school and has a minimum wage job, it is likely that there child will be very much the same. This also applies to the other side of the scale. If your parents got very high marks in school, you likely will too. This is not 100% correct but it is very likely. It also applies to your style of living, a child in a broken home will likely grow up to raise a broken home. A child who lives in a wealthy home will likely grow up to live in a wealthy home. Usually a child lives a similar childhood their parents lived.

So discuss.

My parents are nothing like me, my mother is a highschool drop out, and my father barely graduated, my step father went through college. Both of my parents are working at minimum paying job, and we do not own a house. My parents are not religious, yet I am. I plan to have a very different future.

That concept is nothing more than an excuse. If it as true, all of America would be poor, as many of the immigrants that came over were poor and many un/undereducated. In fact, the whole world would be that way, because in those cavemen days our ancestors were uneducated and poor.

Thousands of examples of exceptions to the rule, I could honestly go on all day about this.

To spare you from my usual endless speech, I'll just say that this concept is right up there in that elite group of idiotic ideas, right there with affirmative action and universal health care.

I agree, but not nearly to the extint your going. I mean a lot of times if a parent
forces a kid to get good grades, they'll rebel and do exactly the opposite. I think
your environment, friends, and social standing have more to do with it then your parents.

Or the kid could choose to not be a pain in the ass and listen. You can choose your friends, and the rest can easily be overcome if the individual chooses to.

Yea. The girl who I am seeing just now is gets much better grades than I do. This makes me try harder and study more just to try and get even with her.

My parents are divorced. My mum is currently doing an MBA, my dad has a degree in physics and my step dad is a drop out. But its his personality that got him his job.

I hope to join the RAF but first I will goto univeristy and get a degree.

This is part genetics. Children who were abused as a child will nearly always be abusive parents. Why? Because they have never been shown another way to punish their children and they do know it's morally wrong but can't help it.

Yeah, but a lot of children will choose not to listen in the teenage years. I disagree about the other three being easy to overcome though. There is a very strong psychological need to conform in high school, and you'll take just about any friends that will take you. I mean, if your the weirdest kid in your school, you can't choose to go become friends with the popular girl that always seems to shine. Say a kid has a group of friends, and he thinks there a bad influence on you, I doubt a kid would stop being friends with them. Who needs more enemies in high school?

Environment, How would a child overcome that? If one grows up in a crime riddled neighborhood, it's likely he'll become apart of it as he gets older. I'm not saying there won't a minority that will get out and make something of themselves, but it's unlikely.

Social standing probably isn't as important as the other two. But if you were
very poor all your life, its likely that could motivate you to make something of yourself. Or vice-versa.

The point that I'm trying to make is that you can't base how someones life will turn out on one thing. There are probably hundreds of other factors that would affect it. Saying someone will become a janitor because there parents are a janitor, just doesn't seem realistic.

My mums a graduate, my dads a drunk. Kinda odd but they still love eachother and we get along fine so i'm not to fussed. I get good grades at school and have quite a number of friends.

I don't think it's all the parents fault if their child gets bad grades, I think it's mainly the childs itself because they're the one that actually has to do the work, the parents just encourage/support etc.

Not a 100% correct theory, But i think i understand what he means.

If your parents are always agressive and have a bad attitude, Your likely to develop that as your spending most of your time in the same house as them.

But things like grades all depend on the child, if his parents are 2 drunk's and the child puts his head down and wants to be succesfull, He will achieve it.

One can argue both points. But in conclusion, No, The parents do not have an influence on things like your schooling, But as for attitude, they play a big role.

AS a rule of thumb, a child aquires the traits of who (s)he is around the most in devolping years. If a kid is brought up by both parents, both of which made high marks in school, it is likely they will push their child to do the same. If a child's parent's are deadbeat drunks of sorts, what is to say that child will know not to do the same. Children are desperate for attention and therefore look to adult figures as a guide (or so Cruel says).

Personally, both of my parents are college grads who made fairly highy marks. I am going to college and make fairly high marks myself...

NEARLY always. There are ways to overcome it, and they're easy to access (many times almost impossible to not). The kids just choose to sink into those habits.

Umm, no. Look at Paris Hilton for example. There are thousands out there that show to opposite. It's all a matter of personal choice. Lets say I kill myself because I have a 1.2 GPA and no hope of going anywhere in life. Now, 10 years earlier, let's say my grandfather had killed himself. Why would someone assume that I killed myself because my grandfather had as well? No, they should assume I killed myself because I had a bad attitude about life and screwed up my future.

Umm, no. A lot of children will listen is their teenage years. Whether they like it or not, many do, which shows that IT IS A CHOICE. Very few people have "voices" telling them to not listen. Those "rebellious" kids CHOOSE to not listen, their parents don't choose for them. Some of the smartest people I've ever met have no friends, or friends that play chess with them at lunch. Conformity and friends aren't even close to important.

No, it couldn't. That concept is easily the stupid one I've ever heard (not targeting you, I mean in general).

And their parents aren't one of those many factors.

You're looking at the poor thing differently. Though many imigrants coming here were poor and uneducated, they still had the money to pay to get on a ship. Also the caveman thing, it's the most rich just keep getting richer. A hundred years ago no one had a million dollars, now it's not that underheard of, still rare, but not impossible. It's the riches keep getting rich. Just like if you look at the whole british family and their wealth and royalty.

Because they got here does not mean they had the money to get on the ship. Many sneaked aboard. Many sold their entire houses and all of their belongings to come here legally. Face it many of the immagrents that came here had virtually nothing.

The ammount of money has also gone up very much in circulation. If you look 1 million dollars can buy you just as much as 100 years ago, but its the fact that you have more, because the ammount of money has gone up.

When a royal family is overthrown what happens to the sons or daughters? they were raised as princes and princesses, and then their family loses there power and wealth? Then what becomes of them.

You're on the right track but not quite right, it isn't what your parents did as kids that predicts your life it is how they discipline you and what morales they show to you etc... However as younger kids you tend to support the same team as your parents and then go through a rebellion where you hate everything they like... But yeah your parents havea great influence on you, obviously as just about everything that you learn to do with life itself is from them and people ALWAYS explain things with some kind of BIAS.

And I'm assuming that you've done your own research and have much more knowledge in the field than those who have earner PhD's specializing in matters such as this? If not, please don't argue against fact, it shows ignorance. Most people cannot afford to see a shrink and have NO access to them.

sorry to drop in and be a douche and all, but what has that got to do with genetics? that's just the psychological part of it.

When I was talking about genetics, I was talking more about the school grades. Your psyche is also part genetic; for example many people who are on anti-depressants have genes that represent the lack of serotonin production in the brain amongst other chemicals required to live a healthy life.

Both my parents did shit in school, they both dropped out. Yet i am probably the smartest guy in my class, and is very motivated to learning more.

Beat me too it. Ace, I say this too. :P

People choose their own morals and values. Look at Shredder. From the sound of things, his parents are religious, while he and his brother aren't. Religion is a biggie in morals/values/beliefs.

Of course if your parents beat you as a child you may go out of your way to be the opposite to your kids, etc, but it still has no effect on whether or not someone is successful. That's personality, very different.

I see that concept as a stretch, just like ADD. How many kids are diagnosed with that nowadays? They want to get their kid to shut up, not help for a problem. Behavioral sciences is a constantly advancing field. I'd be willing to bet there's another study or just as many people with PhDs that disagree. I mean, you used the phrase "nearly always". What makes the people that don't an exception?
