I am currently looking into investing around $2 million in a datacenter. Might want to invest more.... But still looking for one that I like, that's the first part.

INTC is pushing hard to get their foot in the door and basically need this to survive. I have faith. They're in trouble otherwise cuz PC decline

Mellanox big gains if datacenters are successful and become more immediate. They make/sell all the switches/other supplies neccesary.

I've picked up the following stocks over the last few days: Tesla, Solar City, Twitter, and Sony

Twitter has recently dropped to IPO levels, I'm an Elon Musk fanboy and believe in him and his companies (+ picked up Tesla at $225 during China's meltdown), as for Sony, I don't know. There's no longer a 78% chance they're going to go bankrupt in the next two years + they've been doing quite well this year.

I'm also interested in Taser (largest cop body camera producer), Microsoft (their Cloud Computing is growing rapidly + the likes of Windows 10 and the Surface Pro 4), and then some 3D Printing & Marijuana stocks. Need to find some suitable ones though.

Probably going to invest another 4-5k to have sit (and hopefully gain) while I finish up college so if anyone has some suggestions, suggest away.

 

First, the stocks you picked up everbody owns and is literally the reason tesla has any "value." Value being in quotes because it has negative earnings

Tesla - They are volatile as fuck with literally no basis. They missed recent expectations and are literally losing money every quarter. There is so much air under tesla it can honestly only go down longrun

Solar City - Read tesla. You might as well throw your money on red or black

Twitter - Dying social media. Can't figure their shit out. I've actually being shorting this stock

Microsoft - PC sales declining like a mother fucker. I wouldn't touch it, but to each his own here. If you're into cloud computing look into data centers

Taser - Not the largest cop body camera producer. GoPro is

Marijuana - lol Stop. If you think weed has a future pick up any major cigarette company. They'll be in charge. These HEMP and MJNA shit are jokes

As your friend man, don't throw that kind of money at these companies

 

Pretty much, pick up Apple & Shake Shack and I'd fit in even more. Tesla has value because of it's potential + I picked it up low enough to know I'll get a return.

- I'm aware of Tesla's continuous losses (4.5k a tesla for starters), but Tesla is also full of potential and I like the company. They likely won't be profitable until the Model 3 hits in 2019, but the Gifa Factory which will soon be at least partly operation is going to cut costs drastically and the Model X starts shipping September 17th.

- Solar City has a ton of debt and it's due to their need to pay for all their supplies upfront, even so they're still the largest solar panel installer in the U.S. & installations are rapidly growing, like Tesla, I also like them as a company and think they'll continue to grow.

- Twitter is kinda an eh. Dropping to IPO levels made me roll with a "why not?" They're still in the process of searching for a new CEO and while new membership has slowed, it is still a unique platform that'll be around until something else comes to replace it. I'm hoping the new CEO will help put some things together and Twitter will figure out a way to bring in some money.

- PC sales are declining, but MSFT stock is still trending low after changing pace and growing quite significantly these last two years. Their new CEO is about innovation again, not just sitting on operating systems. I'll check out data centers, but Microsofts Cloud infrastructure has been growing rapidly + their online office apps went from 16->23% hold this year and more-and-more organizations are adopting cloud office software (that will likely be MSFT). Also, the Surface line has gained traction, doing 900 million in sales, and if the Surface 4 is anything like it's rumored to be, it'll do even better.

- GoPro may be the largest body camera producer, but they do not especially make body cameras for cops. Taser has an entire setup specifically made for cops, not limited to just cameras, but storage and access to said footage.

- Marijuana definitely has a future, but finding a suitable stock is a whole different thing. I haven't found one I think would be worth buying, most (if not all tbh) are an utter joke. I have no interest in buying some penny stocks that don't have their shit together. May check out some cigarette company's though.

As long as Elon Musk is the CEO and largest shareholder of Tesla I'd put all my fucking money on it. Shame I'm a poor student though.

 

I'd like to apologize for ripping your ideas into shreds. I was drunk last night and shouldn't ever impose ideas like that onto somebody. To each his own. You should add an airlines into your portfolio they're in for a good few months (and really stay away fro marijuana haha). If you want to own the volatile companies go right ahead my dude just know that stock could go to zero pretty fast. I personally buy vertical spreads on tesla before earnings reports to take advantage of the implied volatility in the premiums, but wouldn't own the stock longer than a day really myself

My only tip is that when the market nosedives companies like MSFT and TWTR (hard to monetize/expand) have a harder time recovering and is a bit riskier to "buy cuz they're cheap"

SS, do you know anything about day-trading accounts with low fees? preferably in markets that are open when the normal US markets are closed. i feel like i might as well put my free time to some use even though i've always thought day-trading is kind of a waste of time

 

Errr, the futures market (low fees)? I think TDA costs $7 round-trip but you have to have a good amount of money to fulfill the margin requirement because of how leveraged the futures market is. It's super interesting though. I think it's somewhere around $4,000 of margin requirement just to buy one contract of oil (talking to a buddy about it right now).

I don't trade too much in it but I'm always watching it for signals and tells as to where the market will open and how it'll act. I know a bunch of people who do day-trade option strategies like vertical spreads and iron condors and futures and they do quite well but they do play with a large sum of money and often sell options to collect premiums

example: when /es is up after market closes, we'll probably see the s&p500 open higher than it closed and can use that to our advantage

I've stepped into the world of financial responsibility with my first serious, long term position. I'm management at Universal Studios for their Vacations department, and have had to set up my benefits recently. So far I'm keeping it simple, 401K plan for 5% of my paycheck that universal matches 100% weekly. So if I'm paid 500/week, I put in $25, and universal matches it for a total of $50 per week in my retirement. If I keep this up until I'm 65, not factoring logarithmic growth from other functions in the plan, or investments in stocks that I make with the cash, I'm guaranteed around $1.14M for retirement. I'm also investing another 5% in very steeply discounted Comcast and NBC stocks since the two companies have merged with universal in the entertainment industry. I don't know what I'll see as far as financial return on that, but we'll see

 

I'm a bit surprised universal matches 100% forever - I'd dig a bit deeper and make sure they don't have a limit somewhere. If not, that's an amazing 401k plan and continue to use it to it's potential

Are you talking about CMCSA? I have a good amount of money tied into that position. Good call in my opinion despite the cable cutting across the nation

from my experience (i also set up my benefits plan this year), it's not THAT uncommon for x% matching to be offered, but there are normally limitations in terms of upper limits and vesting. i think my match maxes out at around $17k and is vested over a three-year period. either way, it's essentially free money and something you should definitely take advantage of, so good for you

also - it's important to check how your funds are invested. $1.14m sounds like a lot, and it is, but make sure it's allocated in a way that you're comfortable with. a lot of 401k services try to get you to invest in higher-fee products than you need/want (ESPECIALLY by default; there are plenty of papers written about how default settings like this prey upon unsavvy investors), and that $1.14m might actually be $1.6m that's getting docked mega fees over the next 40 years. so just something to check out.
