[Working out specifics]Market Redesign

Here's my take on it all. The goal is to bring out hidden sections that are fairly active, keep everything organized to where they are easily find-able, and merging/getting rid of dead sections to increase general activity.

Runescape Market //This is the most popular market so it goes here first

Gold Exchange //Most popular subcat

Buying //Since buying and selling both have a good amount of people, keep them seperate
Selling​

Runescape Accounts //Almost no one gives a shit about 3-99 "other accs" and splitting up pures/other makes it a mess imo

User Services

Account Upgrade Services //Also a little dead. We could move this with the upcoming section(s) but it looks better in RS market
Skill Training //Training skills is still fairly popular... but a bit dead compared to 2010/2011
Item Services //Combine Torso, Fire Capes, Defenders, where a person obtains an item
Questing & In-Game Services //Getting rid of Other, because it's turning into Miscellaneous. Specify it's for In-game services only​

Miscellaneous //This will still have threads in it

Item Exchange //This has turned into RSGP sales. If we move it under misc it might turn back into item exchanges​

Popular MMOs //I'm against this diea of keeping dead sections, and think everything but WoW should be removed, but it's at least better to keep it together

Non-virtual Items //Don't split this into a buying and selling. Buying threads usually consist of "BUYING EVERYTHING" and people not finding what they want. It's better to keep it together in an inactive section

Virtual Items //This will be the equivalent to software market, giftcards, or keys for non-games

Guides + eBooks //Keep it on it's own

Miscellaneous //Everything else, instead of having a bunch of subcategories for everything, again, exposes it more


Market Tools //When someone visits for tools, it's best to keep it all together

Market Discussion // Move it from RS forums, it's market disccussion, it's best to keep it all together, more active

Price Checks // Again, better to keep it together for everything.

Don't you feel that the Steam market is active enough for its own section? It's probably more active than the XBox market.

 

Then I vote we keep it as is, I completely disagree with an expansion of the already monstrous front page.

(Which I know you're going to completely "disregard" because it was "already voted on")

 

No I'm going to disregard it because we want to expand the market not shrink it.

 

It deserves recognition but I don't see steam as worthy of it's entire own section. Can steam be broken down into numerous things? How runescape is gold, accounts, names, services, etc.

I would like to see steam as #2 but with combined with something else. Why shouldn't we try to push two big sections instead of 1 big one and numerous small ones. Combining steam with something else wouldn't take away from the other sections, it'd just increase it's activity as a whole.

 

You can still easily expand it with how I said it, it would just be much neater and space conscious.

The way that's proposed imo, will just be a mess.

 

How making the market more organized makes it more of a mess is a question I can not answer.

 

Adding 8 forums and 3 sections to the front page isn't just making it organized, it's a significant increase in the amount of space that is taken up.

My idea would achieve the same exact thing in a list that would save (a lot of) space, which in the end looks more sleek and professional.

But you can continue to pick out single words and pull up definitions to them then act sarcastic if you want.


Edit: Though the benefit to the proposed revision, would be the ability to hide markets I suppose.

 

If you don't want me showing that what you are saying makes no sense, choose your words more carefully. Sythe is a market forum. Our market is disgusting right now and takes up a miniscule amount of our frontpage. We have to accept that we are a market forum and expand it so that new users can see the breadth of our markets and be able to easily find what they are looking for. Hiding the markets further while leaving the rest of the forum alone is going the completely opposite direction of where the vast majority of the community wants to go and as well as the vast majority of the staff. This thread is to work out specifics for a market redesign that has been taking shape with the communities input for months. Thus I am disregarding you wanting to go the opposite direction of what our months of discussion has lead us to (and our common sense) because this is late in the game and we have moved on from high level discussions about which way to go onto low level discussion on exactly how we will be getting there.

 

edit: Never mind, continue with the redesign.

Given more thought the current plan is fine.

 

If you don't like the "Monstrous" front page, let's remember you can always collapse the category's you don't use. The feature is there for a reason.

Maybe combined with the Origin Market?

I was just thinking this. Although I definitely believe Xbox deserves it's spot on the main page (it's the 3rd biggest market behind Steam & RS) I could see it working out in a subsection with Steam & PS3.

What...? The Xbox section has been around since early '09 and has over 160,000 posts, and the MMO section has been around since mid '08 and has under 90,000 total posts. Unless you have access to like, monthly section post statistics, I don't get where you're getting that from.


And can we pleeeeease get the Xbox section split into 3 sub sections?

Xbox account sales
Xbox code sales
Ultimate Team sales

It'd make everything about a thousand times better.

 

Your method is flawed. Look at the XBox market. It has less than two pages of threads that have been posted on today. I'd say about 1.75 pages. MMO Account sales has about 1.3. Gold / Item has about 1. Service is basically dead but lets say .2 of them have been posted on today. That comes to 1.75 vs 2.5 pages of active threads.

So at one point XBox may have been more active but right now it isn't. It is still active but MMO's are more active overall. I would also hazard a guess to say that if MMOs was on the frontpage so that newcomers could see it right away it would gain more activity.

Just as a little explanation: My method is easier because you don't need to know when the forums were added. It's easier since you don't need to do math. It's better because its current. It's also better because it measures amount of individual sales (each thread = one sale... not really but a thread can only be used to make more sales not less) where as a post means nothing. One sale thread might get 200 posts of just bumps. Another might take only 2 posts to get a sale. The post to thread ratio of MMOs is 4.5 posts / 1 thread. Xbox's is 6.75 posts / 1 thread. So if MMO's had the same ratio as XBox it would have 122,000 posts or 41,000 more than it does. Still not as many as Xbox but as I said Xbox may have been more active at one point.

I'll post a poll for splitting up Xbox, however.

 

Appreciate the poll big time homie, and I get what you're saying with your method.

And to be honest I haven't noticed much change in market activity, maybe a little decline because there's barely any halo 3 sales in there now, which at one point was a big factor of activity.

 

Possibly change this section title to Online Promotion Services?

Seemed like a good idea considering all of the Services within this section generally related to promoting a FB page or YouTube video etc.
