Why is Suicide illegal?

I think it should be illegal.

There's only 2 barriers in the way;

1. People decide to kill themselves in front of people by making a show. The people watching will be scarred for life, and at this day in age will start to sue random things, such as the gun company or the building they jumped off of.

2. When people are going to kill themselves, they think, "Why not take some others with me?"
So they go on a killing spree before killing themselves.

 

I'm not responsible for their state of mind. It's their problem.

The murder is what's wrong here, not the suicide.

 

Situation: someone runs in front of you randomly and blows their head off.
You probably have your eyes open for about 30 minutes straight staring at their dead body and brains on the ground, their teeth grinded through the back of their skull. (Hot Rod, movie)

For most, that would scar the rest of their lives and they would be shooken by anybody who touched them ever again.

Thats what I was getting at...
They still murder people.

Then the murder is what is immoral - not the suicide.

Does "self defense of person" not extend to the person's state of mind? Should this not take into account the effects one may have on others by committing suicide?

Do I have the right to use physical force to stop people from killing themselves, and should suicide, by extension, be illegal (given that we do not live in an anarchistic "free" society)?

I was just going to say it comes down to morals. Morals may help prevent you from suicide from a conscious point of view. Murder is immoral regardless of "view" because it's not your human or humane right to kill someone else.

I believe nobody should kill themselves for any reason.

Under what law does it specify suicide as illegal? Nobody serious enough to kill themselves would take even a second to ponder suicide being illegal before they commit to it.

Possibly it's a reason to contain a person if their suicide attempt fails and they are able to help them turn their lives around.

Physically acting against others is an obvious physical act. The other person cannot simply wish it away. On the other hand, speaking your mind

Right, you cannot kill somebody else - but why not yourself?

 

So, in such cases, why would you believe that suicide is ethical?

 

It's just an action that the individual has a right to - it's about as ethical as picking up a rock.

Suicide is murder of ones self-being.

Murder being the keyword.

Murder is, well, illegal.

 

It's not illegal in the sense that if you commit it, you are arrested (LOL) but more that it is prevented by law to make sure that you don't make a bad decision.
