What makes runescape so addicting?

Havent actually played the game since 2011 and even then all i did was merch, pk and stake. The only thing that keeps me around is the ability to make money.

 

Theres many things that can make it addicting. One of the things would be the gambling side. Nothing better than the feeling when u win a 1b stake. Or you got the achievement side like a 99, or 200m xp or even a item like bandos. Theres multiple things that can make rs addciting.

 

The pking and community

 

I really don't think so, many other games have pking and the community is shit tbh lol.

 

For me personally, I think it can be confined to three things:

1. Sense of Achievement: Progress in this game really does make you feel like you're getting something done, and there's always something to do. I mean heck, I've been playing on and off since 2005 and I've only achieved one 99 on RS3 and one 99 on OSRS (Both Cooking ). But yeah, once you get something done the feelings great. (Going for 99 Fletch at the moment!)
   
2. Social Aspect/Bragging about Achievement: Part of this kinda links in with the first reason, but everyone loves bragging about their accomplishments. So while you have friends that play the game, you're gonna enjoy it. Just the general socialising as well is a huge aspect.
   
3. Nostalgia: Obviously not an initial reason when you start playing the game, but 10 years down the track when you're an adult you really do feel it. I did Underground Pass a few weeks ago, which when I was 12 was my favourite quest, doing it again brought back some old memories.

 

Nostalgic value, along with the sense of accomplishment.

Leveling up and feeling the reward of achievement is what makes it so addicting. There's also many different things to go do that all have rewards you have to work towards. Basically the grind is what makes it addicting.

 

For me it's staking and pking, got borad of pking lately and staking, didn't get cleaned xfer money to private sever and got banned on it lol,
Long story short their just so much to do on game everyone get addicted to different part of game.

 

I botted my entire Runescape 2007 account. I could safely say that "the grind" is not what made it addicting to me man

 

I think a big part of it for me is escapism. Runescape is one of the games that did an amazing job at literally creating an entirely new world -- which also explains why I played so much World of Warcraft. It's a beautiful thing to be immersed in a medieval world with thousands of people who are similar to you and having the same experience right there with you.

 

Ahh yeah, alright you got me with this one. Definitely felt this way back in the day. Having friends with similar goals also made it extremely difficult to quit

 

Do you still feel like this when you play the game today? I had similar feelings regarding the game when I was younger, but they seem to have escaped me.

 

To an extent, yes. Of course it's nowhere near as strong or special as it was when I first started playing over 7 years ago, but it still brings me the same happy feeling when I log in to a member's world and just have an awesome session of skilling or pking with friends or clan members or even with people I just met in-game. Of course there are some days that are completely bunk with some shitter spamming chat for gold selling sites or getting harassed by a 13-year-old with a hormone problem, but the good days more than make up for the bad.

 

I wouldnt say i have ever been addicted to rs. I never had some inner need to play rs, i just do it when i have some spare time. for the past month or so i have been on rs for a total of 10 hours? maybe less. Thats becouse i have finals comming up, so i am spending my free time studying instead.

Maybe thats what an addict would say. Idk. But i have only ever played rs when i have been bored.

I guess i have just always just been a casual player. I only play to pk, so when i got a finish account, i only log on a few times a week. Just to pk for a few hours and then head of.

I think grinding and really putting time into your account is what makes you addicted to rs. But in my case i dont feel like i have put too much work into my account. I only ever train cmb stats to high. And those i afk, while i surf the internet, or wacth some movie. Or working on course work. I would never just sit and train and do nothing else.

 

The fact that you feel accomplished with every level that you gain, progression makes it addicting.

 

It feels like I notice the bad a lot more than what I did when I was a kid though.

If I can ask, how early did you start playing the game? Like were you a young child when you started?

 

Progressing to the 'next level' of the game. For me this meant training my stats to strengthen my ability to Pk.

I like that I can make money off of it, it also gives a great base to practice my coding skills. I like the cat and mouse game with jagex.
