Update regarding the recent hackings

Well, today I figured out a method on how to be protected from this kind of exploit. When I have time I will write a full guide on how to do it

 

It's been brought to my attention that the original post was a little misleading. Right now, we're still not 100% sure whether the database was hacked or not. We really have no way of telling, but we urge you to keep your Sythe password separate from any other passwords you may use. We also recommend using a secure e-mail provider such as Gmail and taking advantage of all their security features.

If you haven't changed your password in the past week, I still strongly recommend doing so to prevent any misuse of your account.

 

I am still a bit confused.

Someone compromised a Microsoft application to scam people for runescape money? (obviously with intent to sell for real money but still)

 

Hotmail is notorious for being shitty in terms of security. Every year or so, someone figures out a way to hack @hotmail and @live email addresses and then shit goes down on sythe

 

This, and it usually has to do with runescape because children are a lot easier to fool with scams 'n such, with a lot quicker profit for their efforts. Hardly any other types of "business" uses MSN as a common medium for contact, most legit places uses phones or on-site chatting services

 

I spoke to a guy at the day while i msn got compromised, he claimed sythe datebase has been hacked, and showed original info of my sythe acc, like password(not current one), email, etc, even some mod's acc info. i was shocked like "wtf!!??"
then i was wondering why my msn got hacked but my sythe account is safe? Now i know datebase leaking was a coincidence with MSN hacked issue.

To an extent, I agree we should actually try to encourage using Skype, or another kind of secure IM program over Windows Live, because you're right, it's security does suck. To be fair though, Skype is used a lot more often then it was over a year go, back then I could only remember you using Skype, now everyone seems to have it and use it for trades.

Chances are it was just the old database leak that's still circulating around the internet - that could be used as an elaborate hoax maybe?

Yeah, I'm already aware. I've just been away all day so I didn't have the chance to edit that.

MSN... dumb idiots. I don't even know why MSN is the standard means of trade for Sythe. Chat logs are stupid, they don't even save if your computer unexpectedly turns off, not to mention logs aren't even considered proof, and sometimes chat only lets you see the last few hours before saying "Click here for history". Skype is 50x better for chat and it's predominantly an audio software!

 

Woah woah woah. First of all chat logs all depend of which client you use. I use pidgin and it saves every single conversation into a html file. Pigin is also lightweight and not a resource hog like the official client from Microsoft.

As for Skype, it isn't 50x better. People can easily get personal info and/or your IP etc.

Any update on this information? I've seen a couple threads sprout up around here with someone saying they're selling the database

Unfortunately, once a certain thing starts to get popular, it's hard to get people to change. It takes a lot of effort to transfer contacts, and almost everyone on Sythe uses MSN, so unless it was banned, it wouldn't be changed. And the Sythe Staff aren't going to take things that far, because they don't want to control everything we do.

Skype is being used more frequently though. A year ago, barely anyone used it.

Windows Live is known to have poor security and making it easy for people to recover accounts that aren't rightfully theirs. Skype is harder.

I don't believe theirs been any other Database leaks over the past two years though, have there? I can't remember one occurring while I've been on this site.
