    University shooting

Today at about 0300 EST another university murder suicide took place at Northern Illinois University. Reports of number injured are still not refined, however the current number is placed at 22 shot, 4 dead. I'm not sure if the shoot is counted as one of the four.

These shootings are happening far too often now a days, and it's quite sad honestly. How many people need to die before someone decides to do something about it? If this isn't a reflection that there is a gun problem in the United States then I don't know what is. How many innocent civilians need to die before someone figures out that there needs to be proper education and lockdown procedures in place to at least prevent these incidents from becoming large-scale?!

Yeah, first Columbine, Virginia Tech massacre, and now this. Not to mention multiple other small school shootings in high schools.

One school did it, the shooter gets noticed, and then the others follow.

And it always seems to be that quiet kid in the back of the classroom with no friends.

Well I'm thinking since things are happening in Illinois a lot close to were I live in Missouri.

My question is are people trying to raise the amounts of death/killings from two thousand and eight to two thousand and nine?

The problem isn't gun control, the problem is kids and how they always single out a certain kid and pick on him/her. That kid that is getting picked on then freaks out and brings a gun and fucks everybody up.

This education system lacks something very important, an ethics class. We need to establish an advanced system of ethics and teach it to school children so they don't grow up to be assholes.

I agree with you above..I started wearing tight pants and hang out with skaters and I skate and I always see a kid getting made fun of...seeing as if he wants to do something bad one day.

ok, first off..its almost like being emo by killing yourself, its the most selfish thing u can do, but dragging others into your death wish is bullshit, I think sure soem kids are bullied, sure soem people have good reasons for wanting to kill themselves but this kinda of crap isnt what i wnat to think about when i think of America, but sadly i do and it happens way more than it should. lets be honest, it should happen at all after happening so many times before, we should have soem methods of keeping guns off campus. I feel bad for those hurt and injured.

Americans need to realise that the 'right to bear arms' isn't relevant in today's society and should be removed from their constitution. That doesn't mean that no-one can have a gun, of course. There should be tight restrictiosn on where you can purchase a weapon, where it is kept, who uses it, etc.

These things happen because the person who shoots them is usually the one that nobody likes or cares about. One day the kid just snaps and tries to kill everyone.
They need to educate the kids on what happens when they pick on one person and the effects it can have.

Just wait, once the next U.S. President is sworn in, one of the first things that they will do will be to enact some gun control legislation. I'd bet any amount of money on it.

Same thing happened in the U.K., and Australia, too. There was some random shooting, and it was used as justification to ban handguns. >_>

There is no note or threat that I know of," NIU President John Peters said on Friday ABC's "Good Morning America." "By all accounts that we can tell right now (he) was a very good student that the professors thought well of."

DeKalb County Coroner Dennis J. Miller released the identities of the four victims who died in his county: Daniel Parmenter, 20, of Westchester; Catalina Garcia, 20, of Cicero; Ryanne Mace, 19, of Carpentersville; and Julianna Gehant, 32, of Meridan.

Two other victims died after being transferred to hospitals in other counties, Miller said. Winnebago County Coroner Sue Fiduccia said a female victim died in her jurisdiction but has not been identified pending notification of family.

Witnesses said the gunman, dressed in black and wearing a stocking cap, emerged from behind a screen on the stage of 200-seat Cole Hall and opened fire just as the class was about to end around 3 p.m. Officials said 162 students were registered for the class but it was unknown how many were there Thursday.

Allyse Jerome, 19, a sophomore from Schaumburg, said the gunman burst through a stage door and pulled out a gun.

"Honestly, at first everyone thought it was a joke," Jerome said. Everyone hit the floor, she said. Then she got up and ran, but tripped. She said she felt like "an open target."

"He could've decided to get me," Jerome said. "I thought for sure he was gonna get me."

The shooter had been a graduate student in sociology at Northern Illinois as recently as spring 2007, but was not currently enrolled at the 25,000-student campus, Peters said. He also said the suspect had no record of police contact or an arrest record while attending Northern Illinois, about 65 miles west of Chicago.

The Chicago Tribune, citing two unidentified law enforcement sources, reported Friday that the gunman was a graduate student at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Lauren Carr said she was sitting in the third row when she saw the shooter walk through a door on the right-hand side of the stage, pointing a gun straight ahead.

"I personally Army-crawled halfway up the aisle," said Carr, a 20-year-old sophomore. "I said I could get up and run or I could die here."

She said a student in front of her was bleeding, "but he just kept running."

"I heard this girl scream, 'Run, he's reloading the gun!"'

More than a hundred students cried and hugged as they gathered outside the Phi Kappa Alpha house early Friday to remember Parmenter, the 20-year-old sophomore from Elmhurst, who was one of those killed.

"I'm not angry," his stepfather, Robert Greer, told the Tribune. "I'm just sad, and I know that right now what I need to do is comfort my wife."

The campus was closed on Friday. Students were urged to call their parents "as soon as possible" and were offered counseling at any residence hall, according to the school Web site.

The school was closed for one day during final exam week in December after campus police found threats, including racial slurs and references to shootings earlier in the year at Virginia Tech, scrawled on a bathroom wall in a dormitory. Police determined after an investigation that there was no imminent threat and the campus was reopened. Peters said he knew of no connection between that incident and Thursday's attack.

Teachers and professors should be able to carry concealed weapons on campus. Think about it...the kids who perform the shootings have nobody to stop them. All the innocent students/teachers can do is hide. If kids know that teachers are armed they might think twice before committing a shooting.

And by ”concealed weapons”, I mean teachers who are licenced to carry guns keep them somewhere safe in the classroom.
