Rare miniranks to promote thread creation

So the forum has gotten a bit dead since I've joined (l0l obvi), and I thought that a good way to encourage people to make threads would be to award random miniranks (new ones, specific to each section potentially) upon the creation of a thread.

So, when Blupig makes a thread in RS General for example, there is a 10% chance I will receive a more common rank. However, a rarer rank could be awarded to me at a chance of 0.05% as well.

The minirank market is decent enough at the moment that these new rare ranks could be valuable and worth holding on to for selling. So basically, users have the potential to receive payment for posting (via the minirank market) without any detriment to Sythe. At the same time the market is stimulated.

I don't see any good reason not to do this, it seems win-win all around.

EDIT: Thought I'd be a little more clear - this wouldn't necessarily have to replace participation miniranks. You would for example acquire a prizebox at the small probability when you create a thread, to not devalue the earned ranks. Rare and common ranks would then be possible to obtain just by making threads.

EDIT2: An idea for a feature of this suggestion - the least active sections could have higher chances for minirank assignment, or maybe the rarer ranks are only available through this system by posting in those less active sections. I.e. 0.1% of getting cook only in the VR section.

 

so basically, similar to the CS:GO system of getting skins? I know practically nothing about that system, just what people have told me. You apparently get a small chance when you open a chest with a key to get a rare skin, or something along those lines.

Only issue I see is the amount of spam that might ensue with people trying to get paid to post. Other thing is, this would only attract beggars, who spampost just for a chance for a minirank. Don't really think it'd be the best way to spark forum activity.

 

If the forum rules were more firm with players it may dilute the amount of people spam posting for free ranks. Or if there were stickies with harsher rules in that section so anyone trying to spam would get a higher infraction? Might be a way to implement that idea effectively, mini ranks plox

 

I like the idea. However, 0.05% seems a bit too little of a chance, if we think about how many actual topics one can make worthy of a discussion. Maybe something along the lines of 5% would be better?

 

Really like the idea, I'd say a 1% chance would be good.

Support, good idea. Spam shouldn't be a problem because it's against the rules.

 

Anything higher would be unsustainable. That means out of every 2,000 posts, someone will get a minirank. I'm going to try and take a stab at the number of new posts per day in discussion sections; it's probably somewhere around 200 or so. That means someone would get one every 10 days, which would keep the market for these new miniranks underfed. Doing this will keep demand up, but supply low, thus keeping higher prices. So should it get implemented, it's in the suggestion's best interest to keep the percentage very low. Otherwise the miniranks within the market will become far less valuable, less coveted, etc.

 

The suggestion is for thread creation in discussion sections, not posting, so the actual number would be a lot lower.

 

I think this system would be far more effective at stimulating the forum than participation miniranks.

Definite support from me, as OP mentioned I've yet to see a valid reason against it

 

I like it. Anything to promote GD activity would be nice right now. Someone would have to manually check the awarded threads for quality though to eliminate abuse.

Honestly I'm not super keen on the idea.

A bunch of miniranks would need to be created for it. I don't think it'd actually increase the number of quality threads by much. I think we'd see no difference or a slight increase in spam threads. And it'd take some effort to implement.

I wouldn't mind if it does get created, but the idea doesn't excite me much.

 

You're not keen as you're minirank addicted. But others might find it useful to have less miniranks. Most of them don't make sense, but this change would make them unique, which is the point.

 

Create 10 or so new ones and make the awarded thing a prize box. Add the probability upon thread creation that the user will be awarded a box and you're set. If they've programmed the site well, they'll have already made all the required functions. All in all it'd be a few lines of code in a couple of spots and we're good to go. Hardly any effort required.

 

It's a pretty good idea and considering it shouldn't take too much work might aswell do a trial run.
