So I'm not like mad(alright maybe a little), but I have to sit here and say

what the fuck?

So I don't normally deal in displays, i got a few from whenever the last reset was and posted them up for sale. I had this name "Hypothermia" posted for sale for over 2 years, with little to no interest. I ended up selling it today for 38m OSRS gp to a brand new user who found sythe with a google search. What kind of desperate child steals a $20 name that took 2 years to sell? I just. I just can't even comprehend this desperate shit.

If someone is found selling a sniped name, there need to be repercussions. There needs to be a list of sniped names. If you are found selling these names here, or any other site, you need to be banned flat out.

If you want to buy these stolen names, you need to repay the value of the name to whoever had it.

I just can't begin to comprehend why there are no counter measures. Sythe is the #1 site for runescape sales in general. why is there no attempt to deal with this?

 

You need to show proof of purchase if you have a sniped name as far as my understanding is.
Selling sniped names is pretty crappy yes? but if you buy the name legit and you're selling it and can prove you bought it legit, then there should be no problem.
Your case is unfortunate, but that is why you use someone to transfer the name for you.
Happened to me before a few times, so i rarely transfer myself.

I sold a name to this kid.
I got my money and gave him the account.
He had the name sniped from him.

There should be a place to post this name where if it's seen again that user should be banned, or made to repay + instantly tagged non market account until the victim is repaid.

Most of the name sellers are hoarders. If there's a thread, they know what's stolen. They see that and say "can't buy, stolen name". If they buy it they are directly supporting scamming.

My whole point is, why is no one doing anything? Why is it "ahhh nuthin we can dew herdy der der"? There are very simple solutions for this scummy shit and I've put a very basic easy to implement solution out there. I'm legitimately disgusted that it's just accepted. "It happens everyday" is not a valid excuse. Sitting by and watching it happen is not ok.

 

There was a thread and it was removed due to sniped names changing hands so frequently, so by the time it hit the market again it had changed hands a couple times and had a new innocent owner. That, and proving someone sniped a name is difficult. That, and someone usually ends up running the thread. Whoever that is is essentially able to call the shots, and any name can be deemed a scammer because the name sales market threshold to be labelled a scammer (outside of Sythe) is extremely low compared to other markets that have more definitive proof.

 

But lets say,
Person A(me, seller)
Person B(them, buyer)

If there is a sales thread, link to the sales thread.
name is sniped during transfer.
I confirm, name stolen. (If I was to snipe this name, it would now be worth nothing)
buyer confirms name stolen. (now worth nothing to them)

Now the hoarders have a place to go to see what's stolen. Anything accurately reported is on that first page. If someone approaches them with a name for sale, CTRL + F type name in. If it's there, you say nope. Sorry. That's worthless. If you are caught supporting thieves then there should be a ban in place.

I see how this can be an issue. I can see this being a decent bit of work for whoever would step in to manage this thread.

I'm not involved in the upper workings of sythe obviously, it just seems fucking WILD to me that the response is "oh that sucks". I mean this happens to people with names that are worth hundreds/thousands (not as often I'd assume, as they take the proper precautions and pay for swapping services), but for a name worth $20... thats a bit overkill. I just can't believe there are kids out there that are that desperate, and that there are no repercussions.

What you say is a lot like title washing on vehicles in the US. You take a totaled vehicle, bring it to another state, they give it a clean title, and suddenly the vehicle is worth thousands more again to some unsuspecting sucker.

Sythe has dominant control of the RS market, at least that's how I see it. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. I think there are solutions and I think it needs to be brought to attention and have a stricter policy for this type of situation. If someone cares enough to take the proper precautions they should be able to seal a names fate on this forum. Sniping is scamming, thievery.

Honestly, Sythe's policies seem to help aid name snipers. I remember Gucci "accidentally bought my sniped name Lickitung" and sold it 550m. It just doesn't happen anymore that it gets traded around a few times "by unsuspecting people".

"Innocent" people accidentally buying 2 digit names from Colt seems to happen quite frequently now.

 

It's way to lax. "sucks to be you, git gud, gg ez lmao" is the sythe stance, it's just fucking insane to me that its just that simple.

Thats a bullshit excuse for allowing stuff like that back into the name pool.

If anything

2 digit name sniped
2 digit name purchaser name

I want to sell this 2 digit stolen name
contact the purchaser who had it stolen
"hey i want to sell this, could we come to an agreement for this to be removed from the stolen list"?

I mean it just seems like there are some fairly simple solutions for this bs.

 

I rarely deal in display names, so it's not my "niche", I think someone like @Amy and @Assassin would be a good fit since I'm sure they keep tabs and know off the top of their head what is happening in that part of the universe.

I would be happy to brainstorm how to go about it.

this sums it up perfectly. there's a reason why we don't have it now, and that's because it was tested and proven as ineffective

A 'do not buy list' is great in theory, but is not practical. Sniped names can and do transfer ownership and are often offloaded to users who are not experienced in the market (for obvious reasons).

The best way we can handle these situations are through reports; that verifies if a name has been sniped and in some cases can lead to the sniper being anti-scammed for the name back. By reporting a name as sniped it can also be considered a indirect 'do not buy list' as it will come up on searches.

A good idea would be to gather all the active name traders and create a Discord server where sniped names are announced in order to bring awareness to other traders. Not all names are public and its common for someone to snipe a name from an active trader and quickly try to sell it to another in the market - before they are made aware it was sniped.

@Hike - I understand you are not happy that someone stole the name from your buyer, but you can't expect something to happen if you haven't made a report
