If you possess a reasonable amount of reputation on a forum where trading occurs regularly, not securing your account properly leaves room for all sorts of things to happen.

Should a person get scammed because you were reckless in not securing your account properly, you need to be held accountable. It is nowhere the website's fault that you're ignorant that you think you'd be an exception to this. Because there is an exploit, like previously mentioned, also currently being used, you are purposely exposing the website's users by not using a Two Factor Authentication.

Anyone could fall victim to this, even staff. They are just more competent in securing their accounts.

 

He could update to a version of vBulletin that isn't from the 70's, could be a good start.
