[Help please]Wireless router.

So heres my problem.
I have a macbook pro 15' and would like to use the internet in my room upstairs.
I have broadband at 512kbs.
The complication, the only phone line in the house is downstairs.
I have bought 2 wireless routers and neither worked.
The first was a D-Link the seconds was apple airport express.
Is there any reason why neither worked?
Will the speed be reduced?
I followed the instructions precisely.
Also, is there another way to use the internet besides an super long fucking cable.

Well your first problem is you have a mac

Why do you think your routers don't work? What do they ask you?

Mac is not a problem. Sure, everyone hates it, but it's not at fault this time.

Wireless will always be slower in comparison to a direct connection, no matter what. It's just how it works.

Have there been any specific errors while trying to use any of the routers? Have you checked the manual/docs for proper installation? Are you sure they are even compatible? (I've never heard of incompatible routers/computers, but hey, it's worth a try.)

On the both routers I followed directions exact.
Read FAQ's etc.
One had a set-up wizard that I used.
No errors or anything it just said it was set-up.
I then tried to connect to the internet and it comes up with the error you get when you have no internet connection.

And slow as in Dial up slow?

is your airport turned on? Im not to familiar with the macbooks, but I think they come with an aiport card? if not you'll have to buy one. but get a linksys router, thats what i rock with, im on a powerbook G4, it treats me well.

Aghh just a question. You do have some sort of adapter plugged into the computer you wish to connect to the internet on, yes? And the Router is attached to the modem?
