So many people debate whether graffiti should be classed as art or vandalism, the older generation are the main culprits for naming it 'vandalism', they don't understand reasons behind it or what the achievement is.
I personally love graffiti writing if done properly, I love seeing peoples new pieces, I think deeply into it. I think about the name the writer uses, what the meaning is.
I feel graffiti is classed as art if it is a 'piece' rather than 'tagging'.

What do you think? Art or Vandalism?

Graffiti should be alowed but not alowed around our public places it makes the place look horrible.

Vandalism, it ruins a place's image imo.

Lucy that is kind of spam because as i said it should be ok only if there is certain desinated places where people can let their mind drift with graffiti

lelz i live in NY we have a shit load of graffiti here.. and i used to tag a bit with markers but just stopped.

but yeah i think it looks cool as an art, but too much is just wow... I mean it does ruin the places image (like lucy said)

I agree with you, tagging ruins an area. Stencil art and 'pieces' on the other hand, e.g. banksy's work near me looks quite nice and attracts tourists. Even though it's still classed as graffiti style, I believe it is the opposite of vandalism.

I like the history of graffiti from back in the day with artists like Tracy168, graffiti is not a new thing, it's been around for centuries. Graffiti has been found in some of the pyramids when they were discovered.

Graffiti is a form of art. However, when graffiti appears on another persons property, this is vandalism. Scenario- You've just bought a new car, not a Lamborghini, but a nice new car. You go to sleep, happy with it parked in your drive way, and when you wake up, you have someones name spray painted in characters which you can hardly make out to what they really are, all along the side of your car. Would you like that?

Now, I hate to resort to the whole "What if it happened to you", perspective, but honestly. It's almost as bad as waking up to finding that car missing its windshield, and doors... Sure it still works, but don't tell me you're not gonna be pissed about it.

Not many people go around doing pieces on cars, on commercial trucks/lorries maybe. Most people get disrespect for doing graffiti on someones property. I don't class art as writing "TOM WOZ ERE 08" on the side of someone's new car, I don't agree with that at all. I believe that stencil work and pieces are art.
"It's almost as bad as waking up to finding that car missing its windshield, and doors... Sure it still works, but don't tell me you're not gonna be pissed about it." Lol I wouldn't go that far, but I get where you're coming from.

Vandalism, No matter how good it is they didn't have promission to do so therefore vandalism.

I personally think graffiti is art only if the person who made it actually did a good job

I know in reality it is CONSIDERED vandalism, but I want to know your opinions.

exacly, pieces, murals and characters are an amazing form of art when a GOOD graffiti artist gets a hold of some decent paint.

So if a regular painter or sculptor did a bad job, by your logic their work is in fact not art either...

Vandalism, if anyone says art then I will come to your house for free and give the side of your house a very artistic and ingenious paint.

I don't think chalk drawing is graffiti though.

If you own the property you're tagging, do whatever the fuck you want. If it is someone else's. fuck of.

It's art, and most artists stick to a rule to only write on counsil property rather than peoples houses/cars. It's alright saying just use chalk or do it legally. There is nowhere to do it, many people in the past who have done graffiti illegally have become famous for it, this has inspired many others.

It will always actually be vandalism, but depending on how it's done some people will prefer to call it art, like Stuarts post above clearly shows.

I think in Australia they used to have graffiti boards for people to do there work on but i don't know if they do anymore. To be honest i don't really care about graffiti people don't do it in my neighborhood and everywhere i go there is none.
