The sun will not explode, the only stars that "explode" are Super Giants and the explosion is called "Hyper Nova" or "Super Nova".

Actually think before you post otherwise you WILL sound like an idiot. To all the people saying the "Our Sun" and other stars are different and we had the name for our sun rather than naming all other stars "Suns", are just plain idiots. The sun is a Celestial body providing heat and warmth however little to other celestial bodies orbiting said "Sun". There for by definition and FACT, every star has some celestial body orbiting it and receiving its warmth however little, therefor it is a "Sun" to that celestial body.

    Suns = Stars
    Our star will eventually explode.

    ^ I can't edit my post.

Our sun will not explode but it will expand and vaporize mars, venus, and earth. Eventually burning out and become a giant mass of carbon.

The sun will expel it's outer layers to eventually become a white dwarf.
    So the legend goes.

Stars die when fusion produces iron, not carbon. Iron cannot undergo fusion at ANY temperature, and is therefore the exact point at which a star halts fusion and begins to expand. It expands because the gravitational pull is less than the energy put out by the last few moments of a star's life.

THE SUN = a star. There is no such thing as "suns" because "sun" is a name given to OUR star. Our singular, lonely little star, and no other star ever in the history of man. Not one other star has EVER been called "sun", and therefore "sun" cannot be plural.

It won't become "a giant mass of carbon", it'll turn into a white dwarf which is a star composed by electrons, bigger stars after their explosion will be mainly composed by neutrons.

Exactly it would be extremely hard without visiting the planet they were wishing to land on before. However the documentary is still extremely interesting.

Alright, I'll let you guys know how the new planet is once I'm there.
I imagine none of us normal people with normal paying jobs if this where to ever happen would get a place on this, maybe famous actors/singers etc.

I was watching another video similar to this and they where speaking about how it's almost identical to our earth but it would take almost 20 light years to reach it and we don't have no where near that type of technology to reach it.

Well the good thing is we wont have to worry about this because it wont happen even near our life time, and in the far distant future I assume we would have the technology but that's all considering we don't destroy ourself, but in reality I think there is just to many of us, We need food, water, air and space and if you can create a ship that can sub stain 6 billion people with all of the above then yes we could. BUT then we would need to find somewhere else to live.

    Evacuate Earth.

There are a LOT of other dangers we face other than "natural" disasters. For example, a few countries are ready to go all suicidal at the moment and have been documented to possess nuclear power strong enough to kill the entire population - not simply human, but everything living - on the planet. The only things that may remain if there is indeed a WWIII are the smallest of life forms.

Not only that, you and me or any 'regular' person for that matter has no ideas of the types of weaponry and technology that is secretly being developed in the name of defense. The United States have built a machine that is believed to be able to alter weather patterns, potentially being able to cause earth quakes and/or tsunami's. What does this mean? Well, what I'm trying to convey to you here is that humans are the worst enemy of the human race - not nature, not aliens (that we know of), nor "God" or "the Devil", but we ourselves may lead our race to destruction, sooner than later.

If such technology exists now, or isn't far away from existing, that means that people willing to use it also exist, or will in the future. That in and of itself is an extremely 'scary' thought in the absolute sense of the word.

The world is going to go to shit, but it won't be because of the Sun exploding or Aliens invading; it will be brought forth by us, foolish humans.

    Evacuate Earth.

    Boy, reading through this thread...

Anyway my full response to the OP is that it depends entirely on the timeframe of the disaster and the magnitude. If we know that the earth will topple out of orbit in say, 300 years, either burning or freezing everyone, we could safely evacuate most everyone from the planet. If an airborne virus broke out in 12 hours, no one would be able to evacuate.

Let's go with a median amount- we have 3 years before we get hit by a meteor (yes, I know there are theories on diverting a meteor's path, but they are all hail marys). We would not be able to save more than say, 500 people. Research and development alone would take a decade for something capable of supporting life. We would be able to build a handful of rudimentary space stations to send to Mars. The people who would go on those ships would be the incredibly wealthy and powerful.

Increase this timeline to 10 years, I would increase the number to 2,500. 20 years for 10,000, 50 years for 100,000, etc. We would never actually save everyone however, only mostly those from western countries. Considering we don't bother to spend a few dollars a week to feed an African family, we wouldn't spend 100 grand to ship them into space

It looks a very interesting idea and I have no idea if the technology could exist in the future. But you need to take into account the difference in atmosphere where we lived. Without a sun, what would we eat if plants cant photosynthesise?

    Evacuate Earth.

I watched this documentary a while ago, first of all the dilemma in the hypothetical story is not the sun exploding rather an approaching neutron star, in the situation that we were to have nearly a century to prepare to evacuate it would be physically possible to put together the materials we would need to evacuate assuming that we had the means of actually doing it (energy sources etc.) the nukes could be possible due to the nature of space (it is a vacuum), this means that there will be little to no forces acting against the forward movement of the ship, on the other hand, we may not even be able to complete the ship due to the selfish nature of humans, e.g. not everybody that builds the ship will actually be leaving in it, it would lead to private companies attempting to create their own ships, assuming we get as far as to actually leave earth, will we have enough resources to last the journey? even if we did, where the actual f$%k would we go? would all of the ships (private companies etc) be travelling to the same location? even if we were to make it to the planet it may not be inhabitable as it is difficult to exactly determine whether a planet is inhabitable from so far away, in short, we're all f%^ked if a neutron star decides to come to Earth for a vacation at this point in time, in the future we may have a change of salvaging some of our society.

I watched this around a month ago actually. It's a great documentary, however if a neutron star were approaching earth, and it would reach us in 75 years I don't think I would care very much. (I'd be dead by the time it got here most likely).
