Dont know what to do about girlfriends mom

Ok so basically my girlfriend has been living with me for about the last year and a half, meaning that I can claim her on my tax return as a dependent because she has no job and she is still In school. Yet when I go to file my taxes turns out she has claimed my girlfriend and when I asked her about this she said "you can have her next year" which I think is wrong as I have been supporting her for 1.5 years is there any way to handle this without legal troubles? On another note her mom has a large amount of her legal property yet is not willing to give it to her and I do not know what to do

 

If you cant reason with her you'll have to get acting according to law. Your girlfriend should be able to call up and register a change in address with them to confirm she's not living with her mum any more and is living with you, then you should be able to call up after that and claim on yours.

As for the property; there isn't really any way to access it without involving the police or something if she wont hand it over.

 

I'd 1st ask what your gf thinks about this and if her answer is something like "This isn't really problem, forget it and lets move along, next year will be better" then I'd suggest running maybe?

Your gf's mother seems to be a real piece of work and if your gf is okay with it then I have bad news for you. And don't confuse 2 things, she might say stuff like "I don't like what my mother is doing" but if it's only words and no action then again I have bad news for you.

First, I'd talk to your girlfriend about the subject and ask her to talk to her mom.
If that doesn't work then I wouldn't be afraid to use the law to your advantage especially if your girlfriend is on your side. If she isn't on your side and supports her mom, then I don't know.

Is she 18? If she isn't 18 there is nothing she can do I don't think since her mom is her legal guardian right now. Tell us how it goes i'd love to hear.

Hello all, I know I posted this a while ago and slightly forgot about it but I have an update! So after reading some of the comments I decided to ask her mom to lunch and confront her about the issues. I told her exactly how I felt about the issues and first she was very against giving me any sort of money at all, and then I would have to bring legal counsel into it. (Talked to my gf before hand and she was completely fine with it.) as soon as her mom heard this she gave me around 75% of the money she got for taxes, and let my girlfriend collect her property with no problem. She apologized and said no problems will happen again, but I can tell she is still very spiteful and angry but was just scared of the possibility of law enforcement

 

Shes probably doings some shady shit if shes that scared but other than that I guess its a win for you? Good on you bro! Goes to show words have meaning and no need to take action before talking it out

 

How did it go, any update with the situation?

 

Posted an update the other day, haven't really talked to her since I confronted her and probably won't for a while, hopefully time will make her change for the better

 

If her mom already claimed her for last year, you would have to convince Mom to re file her taxes without claiming her daughter which is a hassle and would result in more fees and her paying back her refund if she got one or paying a large amount more than she had to. Whats done is done and you can't force her onto your taxes since she has already been claimed for 2014. Sorry dude, I guess wait till next year.

 

This actually depends on a variety of factors such as age and if you gf has stated that she is financially independent.

 

Glad to hear that it's resolved, I'd definitely have your girlfriend change her legal mailing address to preempt this issue next year.

 

She has to change her address herself, if she is still living at her mothers on paper theres not much you can do. Also, unless she can prove she bought the stuff that her mother isn't giving back she can't really take it from her.

I am glad that things got resolved. Make sure all legal documents state that she is now living at your address, this way future problems don't arise!
