Exactly! So, as the question was proposed in an abstract manner (0.99... = 1 as opposed to 0.99... miles = 1 mile), and, in the abstract, there is no smallest number, then the answer to that question would be no.

Thats a silly tactic to play. You and I were arguing about 1/x where x = infinity, not 0.999 bar.

A number of mathematical proofs have been discussed within this thread now. Anyone who still believes that 0.99999 recurring is not equal to 1 must now disprove the presented proofs or forfeit.

well.. first of all ur all dummmy's :) if you do 1:3 u get 0.333333333... but the final number is a 4 because well you can get a 1:3 to be a perfect 0.333.. so that 4.. is the 0.00000000..1 that makes the 0.9999999...... go to 1.. :) there u go solved

No...duh.

Thats why if you buy an item in rs for .999 and sell it for 1 you earn .001. :D

Now you need to understand that fractions and decimals are nothing alike.

1/4 isn't .4 or anything so 1/3 cant be .3333 etc.

The decimal .99999999999 , can carry on forever it will never increase into 1/1 .

Nothing can change that no matter how many 9's you add in there.

Go back to school. 1/4 is .25 not .4

1/4 can be and IS .25 so 1/3 CAN be .3 and IS .3.

Well, all right, I see what you mean. If x is truly infinity, then it would seem that the answer is zero. However, the way I learned math, you could not assign a variable a value of infinity, but rather, approaching infinity.
