Does 0.999... equal 1?

I agree.. All these numbers are rather confusing to me so I brought it up to my Algebra teacher and he started yackin about shit and I didn't really listen..But the fault lies in our number system, for exactness it is .999999 ect, but i think for a bit of modern convenience we just round it up lol

 

I wouldn't suggest trying to debate agisent this, I cannot find a single thing to say in reply to it, your right, no debate what so ever, logically, you've already won.

 

.000000000000000001 would be infinitely larger than the difference between 1-.9...

The difference is so small, you would not be able to write any estimate of the number unless you used zero.

It just sounds rediculous that 0.99 should be equal 1. By normal sence, it isn't possible.

If you guys can provide a link where some experts say, that 1/3 = 0.33 (infinite 3), i would be greatfull . Since it's not . 1/3 = 1/3 not = 0.33 .... this topic is the reason why ..

Okay, so. The difference between 1 and 0.99 (infinite 9's) is Very very tinny small. okay?

but if x = 0.99 (inifinite 9)

then 10x is NOT 9.99 (infinite 9).

For example, if x was "0.735", 10x would be "7.35", og "7.350". not "7.355" or "7.3555555 (infinite 5's)"

with x as 0.9999, 10x will be:

9.99 (infinite 9) and then a 0 in the end. (Where "in the end" means after the never ending "infinite").

By physical law, there isn't a "after infinite", so I might get some critic on my post. But there's no way proving it. Other than thinking logic.

Try it on you calc, if you type in .99999999999999999999999999999999999999 and press enters gonna output 1.

Also Drengen, infinite is proably not changed and multiplying something by 10 is basically moving the comma when its infinite since as you said, there is no after infinite.

 

NO! .999 is .001 less than 1.

3/3 is a COMPLETE which makes it 1.

technically if you want to get all TECHNICAL 1/3 cannot be changed into a decimal and can only remain as a fraction since it is uneven.

2/3 can only remain as a fraction also.

3/3 is = to 1 though.

Just because they have a denominator of 3 doesn't mean they have to follow the same pattern.

Are they the same?

No.

I could have 1.00000 pieces of pizza.

The other guy could have 0.99999 pieces of pizza.

Who would get more? Me.

How can you say they are the same when they are two separate values that when divided or subtracted, one will give you 1, while the other will give you, *gasph*, not 1.

I know this isn't exactly a great example, but for one, I could care less, because I could use the most advanced math terms you'd ever heard, and at the end, you'd still take in just as much as this simple example would give you.

It does not. But it also depends on what you are doing. If you'r simply calculating nothing..(School math) Then most teachers will tell you to round..so, .999... = 1

But when it comes to working with Nasa...Any simple decimal can cause billions of dollars , so .999999999999 Does not Equal to 1..

Not true at all, fractions are simply division, 1/2 is simply 1 divided by 2. 3/3 IS NOT 0.9999999 if you divide 3 by 3 you get 1. End of this stupid thread. Since we can't properly divide 1 by 3, when we use 1/3 we just round it down to 0.33, when we have 2/3 we round it up, to 0.67, and 0.67 + 0.33 = 1. OH MY GOD ITS A MIRACLE IT ADDED TO 1. No it isn't actually, I just took math at an applied or greater level, now you make points like this when you start to listen to the essential kids (people with learning problems)

Yet you present no evidence or support for your claim, whatsoever.
They are two different values.
.9999999.... is NOT 1.
No matter how far you go with the repeating 9, that's all it will remain, is a sequence of 9s. Never will that equal 1.000000000000, or anything other than .9repeating, for that matter.

Sure you can bring in fractions, but the question is not about fractions, it's if .9repeating equals 1, plain and simple. The answer is no.
