Well Sythe,

I've been playing guitar for a while now, and my cheap-ass nylon-acoustic isn't working out for me too well. The frets "buzz", the knut is a classical one, so the raised strings are a bitch on your fingers, and the sound quality is just terrible.

I've been wanting a new guitar for quite a while, but I've recently been playing bass tabs such as torture me by the Chilli Peppers and stuff on the 4 bass strings of my guitar because I really like the riff. I've been eyeing off a bass-guitar for a while, but my recent interest in the bass has led to a conflict.

All of this leads to my question, what to buy first, Guitar or Bass?

If you prefer to play lead, or most solos(since there are some bass solos), then I'd get electric.

If you like rhythms, go with the bass.

I'm not sure if you meant "new guitar" as an electric or acoustic. If you're comparing electric/bass, I'd go with electric. If you're comparing a new acoustic/bass, I'd go with bass.

I'd seriously look at buying the guitar first.

it will cause less problems for you.

I can't remember if it was you that sent me the clip of doing the solo of smells like teen spirit but if it is then I would definately say throw out the acoustic for a start.

You was playing a bass guitar tab on your accoustic O.o thats never good lol a bass guitar is alot different to play but if you got good on lead guitar you could probably pick up bass fairly easy so I would say go for a good electric guitar, My bro has an Ibanez guitar I dunno the model but it's really nice to play.

All bass is, is a four-stringed guitar (the four bass strings), but an octave down, hence you can play bass tabs on a guitar, just doesn't sound as deep.

Ya I think I'll get a new guitar first. I really like acoustics, but an electric seems like a must for this day and age unfortunately. Whatever happened to the awesome acoustic stuff like Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton? http://youtube.com/watch?v=ngpZaECKaBM

I have nice long fingers, so yea I'm pretty good at lead, assuming I'm not playing my current guitar.

Depends on what you want to play. If you play with a pick it's virtually the same. The bass has a lot more different styles you can play, so it's whatever you liek to play more.

guitar first. Thats a must.

Get steel strings to toughen up your fingers, so you will be awesome at nylon strings and base strings. Base strings will wear the tips of your fingers out, but in the morning you will have calises or however you spell it, so they will deal with the steel better.

As to what type of guitar you get thats your decision. It's a good thing you learned on an acoustic, as it teaches you to press and strum hard. But you will probably want an electric now. I wouldn't recommend Squire because the strings are close together, and it sounds weak. Most Fenders are good, but I would go to the store and play em before you but em. Obviously almost all Gibson's are awesome, but those cost quite a bit.

Personally I have a Memphis, the company was discontinued back in the '80s I believe. It's custom built and by uncle bought it for like $1500, and sells it to me with an amp for $300. It's an awesome guitar. Looks exactly like a Fender Stratocaster, but it's better.

Had these for a while

Also, get a somewhat lightweight guitar. theres nothing worse then a huge guitar that weighs a ton. (unless its a Gibson, because the sound it produces is worth it)

I was actually looking at an ESP guitar.

By the way, I couldn't imagine myself playing electric without a whammy bar, its just something that I'd need to play one (I love the variations of each sound you can make with it).

I was looking at one of these,

But considering getting a V-shape.

EDIT:
Do want.

excellent choice. Herd good things about ESP, never played one though.

I wouldn't recommend a V Shape though. They fee weird if you put em on your lap when you play. As for a whammy bar, yeah there nice and I would like one (mine has a hole were I can insert one, must have broken off before I bought it), but don't base your purchase around if it has one or not.

Go to the nearest guitar guitar center/guitar store. Try out the bass guitars and the electric guitars. See what feels and sounds the best to you.

Personally i love electric guitars. For my birthday i got a faded gibson sg.

The red is darker in person.

Get a new guitar, Bass is fun, but guitar can be way funner. Plus you said you've had guitar experience, so just stick with it, not start over with bass.

I know people that play both, and they all say that playing bass can improve your guitar skills quite a bit.

Xsafire, were you saying from the point of view of holding a V guitar "normally", or with your leg inside the groove? I've heard V-guitars are awesome to play.

I forgot to mention, I'm left handed, so I usually have to order guitars etc by internet if I want one.

There aren't really many excellent bass players in the world. They're hard to find, because guitar is sort of the "cliche`" type of instrument that people want to play. You can usually find enough people for drums and keyboard, but a good bass player can be hard to find.

I want an Alexi Laiho guitar from ESP, that thing would fucking own, or a decent Gibson if I couldn't get my hands on that. Only problem is, I'm short of money, so I can't exactly pay $4000 for a top of the range guitar.

I've heard a decent electric costs at least $500, so I guess I'll get that much money before I make any real choices.

Go with the bass

guitar is much cooler :)

My guitar being a mini extension of my self, i would say guitar, it's a wonderful thing to have a guitar that lets you play how you feel and not sound shite ;)

What do you people think of Epiphones?

Well tomorrow i'm getting my new epiphone i've ordered online, it's an epiphone sg g-400. I bought it because i really like the gibson sound :] and it's cheaper, but when I get the guitar I'll tell you how it is. It's also important to buy a good amp tho, since it's the main cause of your sound.

Epiphones are GREAT guitars for the price. You will essentially be paying 1/3 the price of something like a Gibson Studio and can get a very nice Epiphone Les Paul. As for what to choose, I'd say buy what you can play well. So it seems like you are more experienced with guitar, so buy that.
