I am thinking of buying a Guitar when I get my Job. What do you recommend for a starter Guitar, complete beginner to play. I was thinking of a Fender Squire(cheap version of a Strat), or a used Fender Strat at maybe a pawn shop but doesn't include amp.

Please post your Guitar(If you play)
and how long you've been playing.

By the way, Guitar Hero and Rock band do not count. I can play on expert too. Rockband and GH is actually what made me want to buy a guitar. :)

I play, I have a Dean something something, actually it's better to start on an acoustic. ;)

I read it is better to start on Electric, it just costs more. Though, I would loose interest on a acoustic guitar.

It's not really. because it will be brutal on your fingers and will probably make most people not want to play more. Electric is much better to start off with I believe. and a bit easier to learn songs as you can maneuver on the fret board easier.

Better on an acoustic, the strings are rougher, and it is good practice for hammer ons and pull offs ;)

Are you on crack? it is much easier to do hammer ons and pull offs on an electric guitar, and the fact that the strings are rougher makes it less wanted, you should play electric first to build up callouses.

As for me I have been playing guitar for about 12 years now, and I use mainly jackson guitars (I have several different ones) along with a few other special guitars. I made a thread for starting out playing guitar and recommended the squier as you can get the whole kit reletively cheap and it still sounds pretty good. I wouldn't recommend it but if your going to want to get a good guitar right off the bat I would suggest a jackson wrxt from personal experience it is a great guitar. But I don't think I would commit to the price without knowing if I could first commit to playing.

deadzone, for the hammer ons and pull offs on the acoustic, i think he meant that its easier to start on something harder, then move onto the easier, and that he is aware that it is harder.

as for a beginner guitar, i'd go for either a squire, or an ibanez GIO. both are cheap and pretty good quality, great for beginners.

There is no starter guitar. If you want to make it serious buy a guitar like you aren't a starter, because later you will have to buy a new guitar anyways...

I also want to get into guitar. This is going to be for when I am bored in the summer so I need a nice and cheap amp and Guitar. Is there anything you recommend? I am also going to need to know how to learn. I heard the easiest way to learn is on the computer, do you guys know any sites for this?

thanks alot! Paul.

I fully understand what he is getting at, But why jump into something that is going to be difficult for you, especially when you will have no clue what your doing, as I assume he has never played before. He is liable to get frustrated and quit all together just because it will take more time to work on it then it does\would with an electric guitar. I just find it would be smarter, more logical and all around more beneficial if you figure it out on the easier instrument then move on to the acoustic, because although it takes a little while to get use to the switch it doesn't take long to get it all sounding beautiful.

fair enough I guess, I get what you mean.

and for norcoboy, i've stated above that in my oppinion, the best starter guitars would be either a fender squire, or an ibanez GIO.

Well I'm also learning, but my dad has some really good ones, hes got a les paul Gibson, a 60th anniversary fender diamond edition, fender stratacaster, 68' Gibson, 12 string acoustic and some more. I like the fender, its lighter and I think it sounds better.

How would that guitar be for a beginner? It looks alot better then a Squire. I plan on playing bands like Smile Empty Soul, Metallica, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, The Eagles, P.O.D. Quite a variety of music. :)

Well eventually if you get into playing you're going to want to upgrade, and let me tell you a couple things.

Looks can be deceiving, and the SG is uncomfortable and is hard to play standing up due to its shape and its weight differences.

Neither guitar is worthy of stage play etc. But that don't mean there bad, you make any guitar (that is reasonable condition) sound good when played correctly. I personally own a squier, and I also enjoy playing all the bands you stated, and They all sound beautiful on the squier.

A lot of people that play guitar will probably tell you to get the SG because of the tone. but as I said before eventually you will want to upgrade if you actually get into playing guitar. That is when you will need to and should worry about tone, pickups and the rest of the important things of a guitar. But for now you are just wanting to learn.

But it's really up to you, as you will be the one playing it not us. I am just stating facts about it. I personally have never owned a SG But I read that squiers will out live SG's

So anyways best of luck, if you need any information Just post back and I will try to help you to the best of my knowledge.
