Are computer games ruining peoples lives?

My research paper for senior year was about the effects of video games on the brain and the correlation that has with violent crimes. It's very interesting the articles that come up when you research that. Yes, video games not played in moderation will effect your lifestyle, but that is why there is moderation.

 

it can absolutely ruin lives, depends on the person. some people take it overboard and it's just crazy. spending a lot of time on the computer isn't good either, some people have 100+, 200+ days gametime which is sickening

 

I totally agree with this, i'm pretty sure that anything in excess is bad for your health, you can learn alot, i mean A LOT from this kind of forums, reading and knowing when to spend money without a excess.

Those examples aren't typically of the majority of the population. Most people do just fine moderating themselves.

Eh... i'm sort of on the fence.

I grew up with them, so I obviously enjoy them. However, it's one of those things where we all have to grow up at some point and have to realize that sitting in front of a computer playing video games is a complete and utter waste of time. I've played BC2/BF3/4 competitively, those were honestly some of the most fun years of my life. Hours on end spent with the same group of people and hundreds upon hundreds of clan battles. At the time I don't think it was a waste or ruined my life in any way. Now i'm a bit older and priorities change in life and childish things need to be put aside. Work, family, etc, "shit happens" in life. I sold my PS4 and both PS3's. I was actually considering going to PC to game there and was about to drop cash on a build, and pretty much two days ago I realized "what an utter fucking waste of time this is." So I just got a relatively good laptop for work and RS among other things.

Casual gaming is separate, it shouldn't and generally doesn't interfere with your way of life.

Long story short, they can ruin lives, but people need to realize when it's time to grow up. (this opinion is entirely separate from those who got lucky and actually make a living off it though)

 

Ruined my life back in secondary school, year 8/9ish.
Throughout primary school I was if I say so myself one of the more popular kids, and I was even in secondary up to year 8/9 where I was at first skipping opportunitys to go out with friends and do stuff out of school purely so I could game, mainly xbox back then.

Then I was literally skipping school which ofcourse is bad.
When I left secondary and tried getting onto various college courses then it sort of sunk in that I had wasted so much time gaming and not enough time studying for the grades I needed.
I guess it worked out ok, a few months after I gave up with college i started working full time doing Road painting which I actually enjoy, obviously no education needed, although maths is a bonus which I was always 'good' at.

TL;DR gaming is bad.
@op trading on runescape has nothing to do with whatever your dad does, merching might.

 

It's a debate that goes round in circles as there's so many things to consider.

I think both, yes and no, for many reasons.

Some people use games as "escapism" which I believe has more negatives than positives.

 

I don't think they do, its really how much you play thow you can chose to take a break at any time.

Response to OP: If I had kids I would have them play Runescape as a direct substitute for school. I graduated 2 years early, school didn't teach me jack-shit, but Runescape taught me a lot. One of many valuable things it taught me is that effort equals success in many instances.

Its all about control. If its a means for relaxing not at all. If it takes over your life then definitely

 

To answer directly to your question, yes computer games ARE ruining many peoples lives.

 

At the imminent end, one will realize the countless hours played were a waste of life. I am at the final stage of this, and oh boy, do I regret it.

 

In a way, yes only if you know how to control yourself.

While others use it for intelligence!! But that is less of the percents of people who use it for gaming/pleasure/Entertainment
