Are computer games ruining peoples lives?

This has summed up the question perfectly.

However, not everyone can follow these steps. People go out of there way without realizing.

People say video games are a waste of time etc. especially MMO's such as RuneScape and WoW, But when you think about it, if you weren't playing video games, what else would you be doing? Fair enough you could be doing something a little more productive, but you'd be wasting time one way or another. Watching TV, sitting down thinking about things etc. Nearly everything in a daily life could be considered a waste of time.

As long as people can remember they are playing a game and don't get their mind trapped in it, I don't see a problem.

People just need to realize when it's getting overboard. I mean a game is a game. It's supposed to be a form of entertainment.

I agree, but I'd like to add a bit to this. I don't see this being an issue if it does not interfere with the person's goals. It's one thing to pull that one odd allnighter and another completely to surrender your ambitions to a game. The moment you start giving up on goals you are passionate about, you're doing it wrong and you need to change something. Then again, if all you do is play games, you might not strive for anything higher...

No. I think people put to much emphasis on the computer games and not enough on that those individuals are to blame. You have to learn to balance things. I've played games a good portion of my life and balanced it very well with sports, working out, schooling, and now a job.

Are computer games ruining peoples lives?

I've got a rather love hate relationship with games myself. Very athletic in school and had shit going great. Women and Varsity Baseball were my life and of course the occasional gaming session. Then tbh idk wtf happened, forgot to do work for a class because of a call of duty tournament I was in, grade fucked up my spot on baseball team. Just more or less gave up and did nothing but play games and hardly pass school. Broke up with an ex who (hot as hell so I didn't mind) would trade me sex to not play games. Eventually stopped playing video games for an entire year. Recently got back into them but I'm very limited in the times I allow myself to play. I have hopes and dreams lol.

So yea, In moderation games are all good, but if they become your life then yes you're pissing away every opportunity you have.

Are computer games ruining peoples lives?

yes, just to everyone one elses posts, I think the only way to stop playing when you are addicted is admitting it. Once you admit it and you know you are, you should atleast try to stop. At the end of the day, most people after a certain time realise that whatthey are doing is wasting their lives away, i think any sane/bright person should be able to see that.

How you go about changing your life is all down to how you do things, and one thing may work for someone but it won't work for another.

In fact, I will use the example of smoking, quitting a video game that you enjoy, are good at and have a lot of fun on is like smoking to me, and although I don't smoke I know all the horror stories and how people say it is very hard to stop, however I have experienced similar things.

One thing I will say that I don't believe will work, certainly for me is allowing myself to modulate my own time. For a brief period sure, but in the end the game always seems to get to me.

For example, when I had my laptop 24/7 I would get on and do my homework, for the next day (the night before sort of thing) however it soon became a struggle and I was getting up early to do it, although I would generally find a way to do some decent homework and never not do it.

So, in my opinion, at least for me, and you may have similar/completely different experiences, the way I would stop/will have to stop is by force, for example having the computer taken away/ not having 1 at all.

I believe there are two types of people - people who don't get addicted to computer games and people who do.
I see people who get on with their homework and then go on the computer or maybe both at the same time but they do well at school because they have gotten on with it, and I also see people who can't regulate their time effectively and as a result do badly, which is a real shame....

    thats my take

Not necessarily computer games but people are ruining their own lives. Addiction is their problem not the computers :p

I have to disagree, the games are made with the intent of being addictive in the first place, otherwise people wouldn't be addicted. Thats how they make their money. Sure, some people don't have a reaction to it however many people do, and are spending money all the time because of it making it a lucrative market, so more devs want to create more games and so on and so forth. Sure, they are addicted, but it's not like they are addicted to everything, just the games that are designed to be to keep you on them

If you enjoy doing it, then its good for you until you reach a point where it is affecting other aspects of your life. Then it is ruining your life.

Are computer games ruining peoples lives?

Gaming used to just be a favourable hobbie that people enjoyed doing, nowadays gaming is everywhere and it's taking over like crazy. Honestly, if people want to play games all day and spend their money on video gaming then that's their choice, at the end of the day it's the users choice to determine when enough is enough.

I play games everyday almost, but I play with moderation. If you haven't got a very busy personal life then you're probably more tempted to play longer, even develop an addiction and ruin things for yourself. But it's all about choice, no one can stop you but yourself.

So no video games aren't ruining people lives.
Can it? Possibly depending on how the person themselves perceives their gaming time.

Are computer games ruining peoples lives?

It depends on the level of addiction you have to the game, such as when I first start playing nearly any app based game such as underworld epires or boom beach, in he beginning I wat to spend some money and get better at it fast. Even though I know all I am doing is paying for time that I would otherwise spend in the game getting resources or attacking people or leveling up or what have you thus making me spend more time in that game otherwise that investment was for nothing. So every time I quit a game I kick myself in the ass and say next time it wont be as serious or as big a clench on my wallet which I have definitely gotten better at.

But when I was a kid my parents hated me playing Runescape because I was addicted to a point and because of this was cut off from the internet for a large chunk of my life from being grounded for months just from using the computer and as you said if I had been using my time wisely I would be a god damn genius right now. But gaming taught me some basic rules of life, interaction, buying and selling, bartering on prices, and a shit ton more. So in those respects I wouldn't trade my childhood for anything besides a fat stack of cash that I could invest in creating some businesses.

People live life how they want to. I play for enjoyment and I know most people do too. Some play for their income.. some play because they just need something to do. I wouldn't say that a video game can't ruin someone's life unless their IRL life is threatened or Identity stolen etc.. People have the option to get up and change their life everyday.... and hardly anyone takes that opportunity.
