[APPROVED] Small change to account rental rules

The max main account rentals section goes through waves of ban evasion and scamming on a regular basis. While there are plenty of stickies that help protect users, some still slip through the cracks. This will assist with spotting the same accounts that they use over and over to prevent them from claiming another victim.

Simple suggestion:
The current rule states:

The change would be to allow users to block only 5 skills for their proof of account ownership. Currently, we have them show just the combat stats.

Account security is still there, blocking only 5 skills still leaves your account fairly anonymous. If 5 skills is too little, i'm open to increasing the amount but with reason. I am tagging users that are specifically involved in the rental section to hear their opinions as i'm sure stuff I didn't consider:

While I understand the reasoning for this suggested change 5 skills seems far to little to keep the account safe and anonymous. If this change does go through I'd say at least half the skills should remain hidden not including the mandatory melee and hp skills.

 

You do realise 5 blocked skills are 99*99*99*99*99 different combinations of possible stats?

 

I'm aware of that yes. But I like to have as many safeguards as possible when I have invested money into something so it is not wasted.

I think that 8 being about 1/3 is a fair amount, 5 is a tad low I agree with aguth there, seems fair

most legit renters will just use basic max melee (e.g nmz leveled with most skill stats 1 ), Makes no sense to use a higher leveled main with skills because it will be banned regardless of if you cover up skills. I think most who are offering this service with a high level total main most likely are evading/scamming as there account would most likely be banned before they even reach the account value back .

if anything just magic and range levels should just be covered

 

Would it be too much work for staff to have an application process where they confirm that the account is not one of those that are listed in the "Blacklisted rental accounts" thread? Maybe instead of an application process just have a thread where rental accounts that have been verified be listed, thus keeping a free market but encouraging those who provide rental services to get their account verified to make customers feel safer. I don't really know much about the rental scene but I don't see how this is very much different than the Overwatch verifying thingie.

 

In my opinion what you just described right there is a sure fire way to get your staker banned quickly by Jagex. Having a maxed main with literally no skills is just asking to be banned because it is painfully obvious that it is a rental account. Actually investing time into the accounts levels lowers the suspicion surrounding the account if Jagex looks it over.

So I'd have to disagree with your statement that a staker account with a high total level is a indicator that it is a scammer or ban evader. I'm all for keeping scammers out of the system but assuming most accounts with a high total level is one just seems ridiculous.

 

That is incorrect friend, i have tried higher level mains also no staker account has ever lasted over 3 month since beginning services, i have over 12 mains banned carry on renting your higher total level main it will be banned friend rwt ban is inevitable.

When ban happens most likely your account is getting tweeted to jagex levels will not make a difference.

 

Oh I know that it will be banned, yes that is inevitable, Jagex will eventually sniff it out. But it just seems like common sense that a account running around with 99 melee stats and all ones is a rental staker and not a legit account. And I feel Jagex will probably have learned that after all these years. I'm not saying having a higher total level removes the chance of the ban but merely has the chance of prolonging the accounts life.

But whether you agree with that method is not the point. What I'm saying is I don't see any good evidence that rental accounts with high total levels are most likely scammers/ban evaders as you previously stated. That is the thing I'm mainly disagreeing on here.

On the original topic though only covering Magic in Range is far to little in my opinion. At the minimum 10 levels should be covered if this change goes through.

 

I'd be fine with this, 99% of rentals are just standard 99/99/99 anyway so everyone already knows your other shit stats u get(36 wc, 14 thieve, max mains are all the same quested builds).

If the point is the increase catching Vaders, blocking any skills makes it increasingly hard. You gotta block em all or none of them is my opinion

Actually, the large majority of the rental scammers use main accounts with relatively high total levels, these accounts stick out quite a bit because most legit rental services use accounts with the stats you mentioned. This would basically allow for very easy to spot matches where we catch them ban evading quickly, as opposed to them hiding under the guise of a TWC for no home IP. I don't quite understand why someone would rent from a user with a TWC but thats a whole different subject.

The main purpose of posting proof is to remove the low quality scammers (those who don't even have the account to begin with), blocking more stats has always been a recommendation to protect the account. However, @GoldIndeed brings up a very good point, most legitimate rental businesses have high turnover for their accounts, the accounts they use are leveled to the bare minimum for NMZ and trained.

 

I support but I don't think it's going to make much of a difference. Anything to make it tougher on ban evaders I'm for. Hopefully it has a larger effect than what I can see it having.

 

This suggestion has been approved @Pendulum hopefully this will take a large hit on the ban evaders, and hopefully will reduce scams in the future.
