whats going on?

I Bet Half You People Dont Even Know What A DDOS Is.
If You Do, Could You Please Explain What It Is And A Few Methods Of Doing It Maybe???

YOU don't know what a ddos is.

Stop posting like that, it makes you look like an idiot.

Distributed denial of service attack.

In a broader spectrum, a DDOS can mean many things, under British Law, flooding an email to the point of unusability is a DDOS!

However, in Sythe's case, a DDOS means preventing access to the site.

Two ways of doing this;
-Mass visiting with a botnet/Wgetting with a botnet

This would involve your "bots" visiting a page you direct them to, a lot, to consume the resources of the server it is hosted on. Alternatively, you can achieve the same effect through a program called Wget - used most effectively on Hal Turner, shortly before the chanocalypse, by the *chans, YTMND, etc.

-Packet flooding

Does what it says on the tin. Send a malformed packet to a server to clog up a particular port. An example program that can do this is Net Tools.

I actually don't know shit, half of this is probably wrong xD

Distributed
Denial
Of
Service

and to put it in simpler forms.

A type of denial of service attack in which an attacker uses malicious code installed on various computers to attack a single target. An attacker may use this method to have a greater effect on the target than is possible with a single attacking machine.

On the Internet, a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack is one in which a multitude of compromised systems attack a single target, thereby causing denial of service for users of the targeted system. The flood of incoming messages to the target system essentially forces it to shut down, thereby denying service to the system to legitimate users.

Distributed DoS, denial of service attack made simultaneously from various directions

A denial of service (DoS) attack floods a network with an overwhelming amount of traffic, slowing its response time for legitimate traffic or grinding it to a halt completely. The more common attacks use built-in “features” of the TCP/IP protocol to create exponential amounts of network traffic.

A denial-of-service attack (also, DoS attack) is an attack on a computer system or network that causes a loss of service to users, typically the loss of network connectivity and services by consuming the bandwidth of the victim network or overloading the computational resources of the victim system.

I actually wrote my explanation out.

Boo to you, sir, boo.

im lagging like crazy, its so hard to get on this site now.

Alright well obviously this had to be a group effort. So get the IP's of the aggresors and post for the public please?

Good, its a little slow but it is bearable. Loading pages only take 1-5 seconds slower but its alright.

I think Sythe needs a server switch and some extra DDOS protection. A new server is needed, because of the mass amount of new users, and their really needs to be a way for Sythe to redirect traffic in case these attacks keep coming.

think it could be some ads? lol but this was devistating :S

I think it's over now, I'm sure it'll come again though, they seem to get worse and worse each time.

Yes I do know what a dos is:

DOS = Denial Of Service
DDOS = Distibuted Denial Of Service
Basicly what these attacks do is make the target machine refuse service to anyone, which is why it is called a denial of service attack.

A few Types of attacks:

Syn Flood:
The script kiddie will send a large number of tcp/syn packets to the target machine. These packets will usually have forged sender addresses. What these packets do is create a half open connection on the target machine. The target machine sends out a tcp/syn-ack packet but because the ip was forged then the server never gets a reply. These half open connections use up server resources and reduce the number of legit connections the server can make.

Land Attack(My Favourite):
This method of attack is basicly the same as the above but it invloves the spoofed packet containing the target machines ip as the sender. This causes the server to reply to itself constantly and will eventually make the server crash.

DDOS Attack:
This is when a large number of systems use the methods above (Or Others) to flood a server, cosuming resources in an attempt to shutdown a system. All A DDOS attack is, is using a large number of systems to launch an attack.

Wow, Why is everyone trying to say an explanation about what a DDOS is? If you don't know what a DDOS is then go to your wikipedia.com website and look it up. Simple, don't yell at people because they don't know what it is.

If something bad is happening then should be nice to each other and try to cope on what is going on and try and fix it.

Not trying to Back Mod or anything but this is kinda immature.

Why? Because I dont like how everyone is so quick to point the finger at people. Also the fact that everyone just picks up words off someone else without knowing the true meaning is very irritating. For example using the word "Hacked" when someone guessed their password. This is just pure stereotyping. People dont like it when they are judged by whatever group they belong too, so why do they do it to everyone else? Such as this guy:

Maybe you sir, are just under educated?

Maybe I am under educated? I get annoyed when my friends go "Hey, I hacked {NameHere} account last night" when he just recovered it when using recoverys. Who cares if someone thinks he did it? It it going to be the end of the world if someone things a guy from this forum is DDOSing Sythe.org?

Did you know that the words "Hack", "Hacking", or "Hacked" don't mean creating a criminal intent but they mean playing with code. I Sir Am Not Undereducated and are not the one fighting on a forum about pixels.

Some guy DDoSed sythe, there is no other explanation about it, if you think not, you can ask him, he was gloating about it....

Lol. That "Sir" Quote Was Not Directed At You.

Btw Noun: hacker
1. Someone who plays golf poorly
2. A programmer who breaks into computer systems in order to steal or change or destroy information as a form of cyber-terrorism
3. A programmer for whom computing is its own reward; may enjoy the challenge of breaking into other computers but does no harm
4. One who works hard at boring tasks

Lol, Now I do feel under educated because I thought you were yelling at me.

But quoted from first paragraph of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_hacker .

Hacker is a term applied often to computer software or computer hardware programmers, designers and administrators, and especially those who are perceived as experts or highly accomplished. A hacker is also someone who modifies electronics, for example, ham radio transceivers, printers or even home sprinkler systems for extra functionality or performance.
