Distributed denial of service attack.

In a broader spectrum, a DDOS can mean many things, under British Law, flooding an email to the point of unusability is a DDOS!

However, in Sythe's case, a DDOS means preventing access to the site.

Two ways of doing this;
-Mass visiting with a botnet/Wgetting with a botnet

This would involve your "bots" visiting a page you direct them to, a lot, to consume the resources of the server it is hosted on. Alternatively, you can achieve the same effect through a program called Wget - used most effectively on Hal Turner, shortly before the chanocalypse, by the *chans, YTMND, etc.

-Packet flooding

Does what it says on the tin. Send a malformed packet to a server to clog up a particular port. An example program that can do this is Net Tools.

Good, its a little slow but it is bearable. Loading pages only take 1-5 seconds slower but its alright.

 

I think Sythe needs a server switch and some extra DDOS protection. A new server is needed, because of the mass amount of new users, and their really needs to be a way for Sythe to redirect traffic in case these attacks keep coming.

Yes I do know what a dos is:

DOS = Denial Of Service
DDOS = Distibuted Denial Of Service
Basicly what these attacks do is make the target machine refuse service to anyone, which is why it is called a denial of service attack.

A few Types of attacks:

Syn Flood:
The script kiddie will send a large number of tcp/syn packets to the target machine. These packets will usually have forged sender addresses. What these packets do is create a half open connection on the target machine. The target machine sends out a tcp/syn-ack packet but because the ip was forged then the server never gets a reply. These half open connections use up server resources and reduce the number of legit connections the server can make.

Land Attack(My Favourite):
This method of attack is basicly the same as the above but it invloves the spoofed packet containing the target machines ip as the sender. This causes the server to reply to itself constantly and will eventually make the server crash.

DDOS Attack:
This is when a large number of systems use the methods above (Or Others) to flood a server, cosuming resources in an attempt to shutdown a system. All A DDOS attack is, is using a large number of systems to launch an attack.

Wow, Why is everyone trying to say an explanation about what a DDOS is? If you don't know what a DDOS is then go to your wikipedia.com website and look it up. Simple, don't yell at people because they don't know what it is.

If something bad is happening then should be nice to each other and try to cope on what is going on and try and fix it.

Why? Because I dont like how everyone is so quick to point the finger at people. Also the fact that everyone just picks up words off someone else without knowing the true meaning is very irritating. For example using the word "Hacked" when someone guessed their password. This is just pure stereotyping. People dont like it when they are judged by whatever group they belong too, so why do they do it to everyone else? Such as this guy:

Maybe I am under educated? I get annoyed when my friends go "Hey, I hacked {NameHere} account last night" when he just recovered it when using recoverys. Who cares if someone thinks he did it? It it going to be the end of the world if someone things a guy from this forum is DDOSing Sythe.org?

Did you know that the words "Hack", "Hacking", or "Hacked" don't mean creating a criminal intent but they mean playing with code. I Sir Am Not Undereducated and are not the one fighting on a forum about pixels.
