@Turin: You're more killing them in the name of revenge.

Regardless, religion is an abstract idea and you must take into account what this idea causes people to do when you are examining it. Just because other things cause people to do things it does not mean that religion gets a free pass.

I've found the most effective way to deal with the ignorant is through laughter and ridicule.

Oh, the irony. Do you actually believe that the moon was split in half based on the preaching of a 1400 year old book?

No scientific discovery has EVER been made on the basis of what was written in a holy book. All that website does is misapply ambiguous verses regarding the cosmology of 6th century Arabia to more recent discoveries.

    ^That's ignorant.

@ Ivy. If you think it's biased. Google it all ur self. And search the verses 1 by 1 and search the scientific discovery's one by one. U will see that its truly right. The argument u give ' That would be like if I was trying to argue that 9/11 was an inside job and my proof that I cited was from a conspiracy website' is therefore false.

@Jimmy. 'No scientific discovery has EVER been made on the basis of what was written in a holy book'

I never said something like that. It's more like : All these discovery's are proved by 'science', but those discovery's were already stated in the Quran 14 centuries ago.

'Oh, the irony. Do you actually believe that the moon was split in half based on the preaching of a 1400 year old book?'

    Yes i believe that.

Read the full story in the Quran. Google it.

That must be the picture drawn by the midget in the satellite and mailed back to earth. The quality of photos were much better than that crap you have posted. We have already proven that the science in the Quran is either wrong or found out before. People say that the Quran said the Earth was round, the Greeks found that out a thousand years before. Most of the Arab knowledge is just Greek knowledge because the Arabs were good at preserving the classical knowledge.

Oh yeah, real photo from Lunar Orbiter 4: [IMG]

    You are sadly mislead.

Here's what I think as a militant atheist:

“Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by the rulers as useful.” - Seneca

I can't even stifle my laughter long enough to formulate an argument to this. You have truly outdone yourself. Let me guess, you see Jesus on toast too?

Sorry but the whole moon split theory is a joke. Give me some evidence that the moon has ever split. That "photo" you posted is crap, and even in that crap I cant see any proof of a split.

    Your Thoughts on Religion?

I don't like religion, nor do I believe in one - but it isn't 100% a negative thing.

My girlfriend used to be depressed, and she said she would've commited suicide if it were not for some type of faith in a god/some meaning to life.

    • Religion can give people hope. Some people need it, some don't.
    • It provides answers.
    • It's helped / hurt people. Though I think the world would be better off if we disregarded religion.
    • When discussing religion with theists, they usually turn into crazy, theistic werewolves. Refer to picture below
    I don't follow any religion.

    Your Thoughts on Religion?

I like the fact that this thread, based on our thoughts on religion as a common term, is now leaning towards Christianity and nothing else.

Most people in the west are Christians and most people know the most about Christianity and thus it gets talked about more.

That being said, most people know very little of christianity. Most if the people that practice it, do so only because their parents do/did.

Superstition contributes nothing to society. It takes a special kind of selective attention to claim that morality comes from "holy books." Even the classic Christian example of the Golden Rule was mere plagiarism of Confucius.

I don't think that it would be classified as plagiarism, Tyro.
Anyhow, I have very general opinions regarding religion. I believe that it's a personal thing, and it should stay a personal thing. I admit that I get bothered with some extremism (particularly by Americans), but what can you do.

    Your Thoughts on Religion?

Religion is being charecteristic, it defines who you are, completely.

It's your choice to follow it or not to follow it, but don't go around trying to spread it with the whole entire fucking world.

    Your Thoughts on Religion?

To the OP, there's a big difference between "religious wackos" and mere believers.

Personally, I'm torn between whether I should believe in religion or not. If there's one thing I'm sure of it's that no one knows the answer to these things (creation, the reason for our existence, etc). I dislike the "I'm right, you're wrong" mindset that so many people on both sides of the argument have, and I guess that's part of reason why I'm in the position I am.
I would like to believe in religion, because as I said, I don't see why it couldn't be true, considering we know nothing of the universe's origins, but something in me won't let me get rid of the doubt. When I think of the vastness and mystery of the universe, I always seem to want to attribute some sort of supernatural explanation to its origins; What if everything in our known universe is a part of some greater organism, just like the cells in our bodies and the atoms that make up everything around us (I know, it sounds like total psychonaut gibberish).
I guess I'm just at the point where I'm trying to figure out what I want to believe in, and I'm having a really hard time establishing a firm belief in anything.

    Your Thoughts on Religion?

It is what you make of it, truthfully speaking, I am a small group leader at a nondenominational church and a handful of my inner-circle friends are atheist. I believe that a church, for example is a body of believers. Simply put, we all strive to act out the teachings of Jesus more, and more in our lives. Whether you believe in a higher power or not, the Bible has some serious moral wake up calls.
