Why eat Pork (e.g. bacon, ribs etc.)?

    why because it isn't filthy....

bacteria is on the skin.. once it's been washed, cured, dryed, + or smoked... then sliced theres nothing wrong with it...

    - i worked in on a farm called sillfield, being the only farm in uk to breed wild boar :) we traveled doing shows around the uk due to the quality

as to why??? even if it was filthy... it will improve you immune system...
    tastes brilliant....
once its been through curing and drying process, theres not much bactieria too it....

I don't know why you're provoking him Nero - he clearly said he didn't want to delve into a religious argument and yet you continuously try to bring the conversation back to it. The OP is simply asking why do you eat pork.

In any case, beast brooks, I admire your temperament - I would have stopped replying a long time ago.

Pork is probably one of the more tender meats. If you have the opportunity to try a sweet tenderized beef dish at a Chinese restaurant; I'd say that's about the closest you'll get in terms of taste and texture.

Why eat Pork (e.g. bacon, ribs etc.)?

I eat it because it tastes good and provides protein. Everything has the potential to be harmful.

    Why eat donuts?
    Why eat cheese?

These also can lead to diseases but we eat them because we want to live life.

I'm not provoking him. I was providing a historical background to the argument of the Abrahamic religions refusal to eat pork. I provided my reason for eating pork, and then I challenged his reason for not eating it. It's the SFA that is nothing if not fair to do. Otherwise this thread should have been in the General Discussion. If I provoked him I am sorry, but I didn't see it as that. You don't come into the SFA and not have your basis for argumentation questioned. If you come and make a religiously motivated argument about say evolution not being correct (or hell, any argument trying to discredit evolution - religious or not), and ask me why I believe in evolution do you not think it right to challenge your reasonings for not believing? That is what the section is based on. I wasn't bashing his religion, and I remained respectful throughout the post.

I'm sorry, this is idiotic. I understand the point you're trying to make, OP, but if people really knew what happened to all the meat and animal products they consume before it gets to them there would be a lot more vegans. That's not to say some people wouldn't give a damn.

In all honesty, it's probably killing us.

It's likely that the conditions you worked in were of a higher standard as it was a farm. If you check out the PETA website they show footage of how mass production facilities handle their livestock - although they focus on the violent treatment of the animals, you can get a good indication of the living conditions of the animals.

If you're not convinced I can find the videos, they are rather graphic in nature (I suppose you'd be used to it though, working on in a meat processing business).

Fair enough, I respect your reply. I just felt as if you were a little too persistent.

oh i know what your talking about, but if you actually research into this you'll see most slaughter houses arn't as bad as you may think...

-my family all work in meat processing/ slaughter houses

    :)

also if you want to talk about bad conditions... check germans. pigs are pinned to floor as not to kill piglets.. and maxamise profit...

oh you guys and your back and forth :p

Also check out the movie Food Inc., you can find it on Netflix or online I'm sure.

Pretty interesting documentary about animal living conditions before they are slaughtered/prepared for fast food companies.. worth a watch!

**I don't really agree with the "spoon feeding" the film shows of animals being mistreated, and neglected, and on top of that all of the health issues... but i think it's more of a scare tactic.

If I made a movie that only showed planes crashing and explaining how easily one little thing can go wrong, i'm sure atleast ONE person would have a different outlook on planes...

Since Pushing Limits felt the need to PM me, I figured I'd check back in on this thread..

Here's what I would have said, had he posted his comment here, rather than my inbox.

Anyway, his FAMILY worked in the meat processing and slaughtering, he says. That means it is probably a lot more controlled than a large factory farm. And besides, the only thing you witnessed first hand was the place you worked. That doesn't even apply to the thousands of factory farms in the US and all over the world. What makes you qualified to speak for/about them? Have you personally visited these places? Didn't think so.

Basically, you're trying to say, "this glass of water does not have any fish in it, therefore the ocean must not have any fish in it."

    Check yoself.

Definitely not an intelligent discussion, and the true question is why not to eat pork? You speak as if pigs are the only animal that produce feces. Really you think rolling around in mud and crap is gonna influence the pork itself? Hell no. At least that's natural, who knows what what some forms of livestock are fed, and what those implications could be on us. Bacon is too good to not eat for no reason. A more reasoned argument, why do people drink poison? Alcohol.

Have you ever been on a farm? You know what is put onto and around all the fruits and vegetables you eat? Bad, bad stuff. But you have to eat something, so might as well make it tasty pork.

I don't know if anyone really remembers it or knows about it but there was a book wrote in like the 20's or 30's called the Jungle and it was about the meat processing industry. A lot of it was pure sensationalism but it initiated a lot of beneficial legislation dealing with the meat packing industry.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Jungle

    Just thought it was relevant.

And yet you claim a couple of videos are representative of the entire industry.

Yes, but that was written 106 years ago. Since then so many laws have been put in place to stop all of the things written in that book, like you said.

But really, does anybody really care about how pigs are treated? Look at how the South Vietnamese were being treated, we go there and liberate them, and all anyone can say is lets get out of this war! I don't know or care exactly how the pigs are being treated honestly, but whatever they are doing, they should keep doing it, because it tastes delicious.

Why not eat pork is a better question, it has been eaten for millennia ever since our ancestors moved to places where wild pigs inhabited. Fire (cooking) kills most if not all of the harmful bacteria, its a tasty food source, provides the nutrients we need ect.

The only reason to not eat pork is because you believe in some silly religion that doesn't allow you to based on nonsensical stupid anecdotes that drug induced visions told a prophet. Pork is a fine a meat as any, FDA does a fine enough job that people wont get sick from it so why even complain about it? Its better than eating red meat for you too so really no reason not to.

I don't eat it just because I don't like it. I'm kind of picky about my food, though. I don't eat lobster, crab, or shrimp, either. I usually eat either beef, chicken, turkey, and a couple different types of fish meat-wise.
