This is this first time I will be investing in an ICO. I am a little unsure on how it works.
10,000 Status for 1 ETH (400 USD)
That should mean that on the release of Status, the coins will be worth whatever ETH is worth at the release divided by 10,000. The ETH market is rapidly changing, but it seems to have a lot of attraction. The president of Russia and PayPal have recently given high hopes for ETH investors. That should give some reassurance or validation that the value will continuously rise until it is released on the markets.
I am trying to compare an investment into an ICO like Status compared to an investment in something like Verge. Status would start at $0.07 USD. If the currency rose to even $1 USD, which is completely feasible with its marketing on Blockfolio and other popular media sources related to coins. That would be a 1429% or 14.29x increase in value, which is a $5,714.29 USD profit margin per ETH invested in the ICO.
(This math will be a little pointless because it is 14.29x increase in profit on the $400 dollars you invest is going to be around the $5,714.29. but I am just verifying that by making it more complex than required. )
Compared to an altcoin like Verge which is currently valued at $0.00314454. If Verge were to increase 14.29x in value, it would be worth $0.0449354766. That will give you 127358.77118644 Verge Coins. It is a similar profit margin of $5,722.93 USD.
Now that I have broken it down, and if my math is correct, an investor has to determine whether Status is more likely to go from $0.07 to $1 or will Verge go from $0.00314454 to $0.0449354766. In my perspective, I feel like it is so much more realistic for Verge to flourish up to that price than Status jumping up. I know it is the same percentage increase, but I have been studying the trends of altcoins and noticed that it is much easier for lower costing altcoins to dramatically increase in price of time when compared to higher costing altcoins.
Current One-Year Comparisons:
Name | Percentage Increase |Starting Value
Verge | +3766.67% | $0.0000804
BitBay | +1708.77% | $0.00152886
BitShares | +2692.19% | $0.01373276
Ripple | +1028.57% | $0.0223244
BlackCoin | 393.71% | $0.10567604
Cloak | +714.68% | $0.41
Lisk | 85.34% | $1.77

I went through a lot of these on my free time, but I listed seven of them up above that seemed sort of popular during the past year. The interesting part is that I find lower starting value typically means higher profitability. That sort of means the less hype or marketing provided at the starting campaigns, the higher chance the coins value is increase a much higher percentage. I can see a few pros and cons to purchasing a less hyped altcoin.
Pros
- Higher percentage increase.
- Low value investments have opportunities for very large returns. (Separate that $1000 you were going to invest into ETH into ten lower starting value coins, and obtain more profitability in the next year.)
- Easy to maintain risk distribution.
- Allows the possibility for people interested in the get rich quick schemes.
Cons
- It might be a shitcoin that fizzles out after several months or a few tipping points of a couple hundred percent increases.
- Higher hyped coins typically have better longevity because the developers have a lot of financial motivation due to the campaigns which provide funds for marketing and technological advances. (Those coins are typically better technology if everyone wants it anyway)
- At some point it requires advertisements to get out into the public, to get that massive percentage increase. It might be difficult to advertise an altcoin that started with low funds or a low-end campaign.
Therefore, Status is an extremely hyped altcoin with lots of financial background and great technology. Unfortunately the starting cost puts it in a position where the coin would have to be $3 dollars or more to receive the same profitability as placing your money into a low starting value coin, which does not seem very likely. It would be a very long term investment, where you could see high returns within next the 2-3 years. Unless it is just an absolute superstar and skyrockets in price beyond what the typical ICO will do when starting at such a high price. I think it might be like playing the lottery hoping for Status to do that.
I am leaning toward investing in low starting value coins, and ignoring these hype trains like Status. What is your opinion? What makes you want to invest into Status? Are you seeing ICO investments in a different perspective than me?
I am very new to this market, so I am really interested in learning.
Any opinions and perspectives are appreciated, thanks!
