    What's wrong with the servers?
    I'm working on it guys.

    I've disabled keyword search as it was slowing the site tremendously. This is something we'll probably re-enable after the platform upgrade.

    If you try to search something you will get an error message and a link to the equivilent google search (only for pages inside the site however.)

    What's wrong with the servers?
    What'd be useful is if users interested in helping with site performance took a log of the times of day and types of errors they experience bad performance.

    Basically of the form:
    Time, day, what you were doing, error you got.

    Doesn't have to be very complete, just a few entries a day would be fine. Post them here so I can diagnose issues.

    Richard, can I have information on the hosting setup?

    I've been investigating the market a lot and have many quotes from many companies around.

    I'm sure an upgrade of the main server to latest intel E3 or E5 with ECC RAM and gigE will surely help.

    What's wrong with the servers?
    It's not a hardware issue. In fact on our current hardware we are running with about 30-40% spare capacity.

    The issue is mainly around database contention. I've been working on minimizing it today and I'll monitor how it goes in the near future.

    Ultimately when we move to vb4 I will change the table types and sql server setup to avoid future contention.

    Is MySQL going to be updated to 5.5 for VB4? It offers some great improvements in performance terms.

    And for main server PHP 5.3 with Apache 2.4 would be ideal to improve performance in general terms.

    While maintaining nginx 1.1+ proxies.

    Well again, the main issues are database contention.

    Regarding upgrades... This is a common mistake among web masters (including professionals.)

    Upgrading server software to the latest -- for no better reason than because it is the latest -- is usually a bad idea. Indeed, the latest versions of things are the least tested and tend to be the most vulnerable security-wise. It is generally much preferable to run servers on backdated versions of things that have already been through years of production exposure and have been patched and repatched repeatedly to get out all the flaws. Upgrading should be a last resort and should only be between major versions (i.e. vb3 -> vb4) and never at the first release of a major version.

    That said, I will do a review when the time comes.

    MySQL 5.5 was released in 2010. (I've tested with vBulletin 4.1.12 and works great)
    Apache 2.4 is the next major release released not so long ago. Still under early stages, but after some testing it will beat nginx (That's what they say)
    PHP 5.3 is also the next major after 5.2 and after 5.3.10 a lot of bugs and compatibility issues were fixed. I also tested with vB 4.1.12 and worked great.

    Please note the test ran Apache 2.2.22 and cPanel has not released support for 2.4 yet.

    Of course, I still maintain stable released for my production server. But the test on my test server showed great results for vB, myBB and wordpress.

    Current nginx stable release is 1.2, I haven't tested. But 1.1 offers by far more performance that 0.9 which I've seen many sites running. So I recommend the 1.1

    Thanks. If you want to help out you can try work out what % performance increase upgrading each would bring over the current version we use. I'd say the ratio of reads to writes on our database is something like 20:1 -- you can use that as a ballpark figure.
