What to do when your being DDoSd or Doxd.

Hello every body, recently on many sites all I've been seeing is "DOX" "DDOS THIS KID" "HAHAGETDOXED". Honestly most people do it just to scare you. Some say there gonna "S.W.A.T your house." Or they might call your relatives. I made this guide for people to avoid it or how to avoid making the issue even worse.

    What Is Dox/DDOS.

DoS/DDoS - In computing, a denial-of-service (DoS) or distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack is an attempt to make a machine or network resource unavailable to its intended

As clarification, DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attacks are sent by two or more persons, or bots (see botnet). DoS (Denial of Service) attacks are sent by one person or system. As of 2014, the frequency of recognized DDoS attacks had reached an average rate of 28 per hour

Dox - Personal information about people on the Internet, often including real name, known aliases, address, phone number, SSN, credit card number, etc.

    Identity Protection

First off, never EVER give anyone online your information. No matter how long you know them they could always try to use it against you. Here are a few tips for people to keep there identity safe.

    1. Never use your first and last name on anything (Usernames, Untrusted Sites).
    2. Never tell anyone your phone number/address or use it on a public account.
    3. Do not post real pictures of your self to any public viewable sites.
    4. Always change your accounts to "Friends only" or "Private"
    5. Do not give people your passwords EVER. Especially to your emails!
    6. Use a VPN/Proxy to avoid people from grabbing your IP. I recommend hotspot or if you have a few extra dollars to buy one. This can protect someone from Geolocating your ip. They cannot get your address from this but they can get your cords/town/postalcode and country.
    7. Never accept strange files from randoms. Some files can include key loggers than can track your information.

    What To Do

If some one threats to DDoS/Dox you. Simply block and remove the person. Avoid talking to them in any communication. If they continue to add you just keep ignoring them and blocking them. The more you feed them the more happy they will be to Dox you. In most cases people will threat to DDoS/Dox when they actually can't do it, they are simply just angry. If it does occur here is what you need to do.

    DDoS/Denial-Of-Service -
    1. Unplug your router for 30 seconds then replug it back up.
    2. Block all communications with the person threatening you.
    3. Be calm and patient, some attacks can last up to hours. Do not panic.
    4. If you're 100% positive your loss of service is due to DoS DDoS call your ISP right away. It isn't fair -- you pay for the service, you should get it. Look into how to look at the packets being sent to your router; if you're computer savvy at all sniff the actual packets (as opposed to just how many MBs you're receiving compared to what you can handle) from there, attempt to determine the type of DDoS you're encountering (botnet, giant packets, etc). Screenshot/copy and paste all of the information you can acquire. Forward it all to your ISP. Even botnets are trackable. ~ Thank you SnowBear.
    5. Install a VPN/Proxy after the attack is over. This will hide your IP, when users attempt to get your IP it will give them a fake one.
    6. Make sure all your accounts are set to where only friends only can view them (or private).
    7. Do not threaten to DDoS them back or threaten them in any way. Doing this will fuel there anger, most people will continue to do it the more you talk to them. Eventually after blocking them they will forget that it even happened.
    8. If you've known the person for a long time try to reason with them. Be nice and calm, If they do not want to reason simple follow the steps above.
    9. Dont call the cops, most people say DDoSing is illegal, it is but honestly they will do nothing about it unless its serious. "Someone puts down your multi-millionare company and your loosing thousands".

    Dox -
    1. Discover the location of the dox, If there is a report button simply send a report in to get it removed.
    2. Avoid contact with the person responsible of the dox.
    3. Change all your passwords.
    4. Change your view settings on public sites. (If they got a picture of you its probably from a social page. You will need to change your settings to Private so they cannot view it unless there on your friends list).
    5. Do not panic, nothing can be done to you, they will threaten to S.W.A.T you or send pizzas to your house, doing this will get there selves in trouble not YOU.
    6. If they post your SSN or bank account info I would recommend calling a lawyer, this is very serious and very dangerous. Sue there ass.

I apologize if this is not very helpful, most people might know this information but a lot of people don't. Hope fully anyone who gets into these situations will use common since. If it gets very serious to the point where there harrasing you months on months just call a lawyer or talk to your parents. Thanks everyone. If you want more guides post some thing below.

What to do when your being DDoSd or Doxd.

Nice guide! Includes all the basics and will help most people.

To add some things: No need to wait 5-6 hours. Even botnets are trackable -- the Internet is not anonymous. Anonymity is getting better and better but as is tracking. Your ISP loses money when you start saying "___ ISP didn't help me at all with my DDoS. Don't use their services!".

As much as I hate supporting the solution of buying a VPN/buying a proxy to connect to your own personal Internet, it really does work. Basically, your attacker will see that IP and send packets at an IP that "doesn't really matter". In addition, most VPN/proxies know that they are used for this purpose (avoiding DDoS attacks) and are exceptional at preventing them as well as tracking the attacker. I just think it's awful for someone to drive you to spend extra money when, in a perfect world, you wouldn't need to do so.

Tl;dr people that DDoS really suck. Weigh your options. The last thing you should do is "be afraid of the attacker". It's a teenager behind a keyboard 90%+ of the time, even more often it is someone that purchased a farm or a piece of software, the person doesn't even know what they're doing. DDoSing is really stupid. As someone heavily involved and interested in the IT field I'm seriously against unethical activity.

Sorry for the long post. :D

There's only one problem with your guide.

"1. Restart your router for 10 seconds, doing this will change your public IP."
You're assuming everyone has a dynamic ip, whilst there's others that are static.

You should include a list of some ways people can get your IP. For example, they can resolve your Skype to find your IP. This is one of the most popular ways people get an IP with the intention of DDOSing. Never share your Skype with people you are very close with if it is important that you don't get DDOSd. If you do have to share your Skype, log into it with a VPN.

The part about being calm is the most important part IMO. I think most people who DDoS are just doing it to annoy people so if you're blocking comunication with them and not being stupid telling them DDoSing is against the law or raging at them. This is what I'd do if my IP was static.

The problem with restarting your router, for me at least, was the fact that unless someone takes your old IP, you get it again when you turn your router back on. I ended up having to call my ISP multiple times before the guy I was talking to told me that he would set it up so that my old IP was taken so I could get a new one.
Maybe that's just how it works in New Zealand, not sure.

I remember when I first joined Sythe over 2 years ago I was DDoSd by someone through Skype and they told me to pay up like 10m RSGP or they'd take down my internet. Me not knowing WTF was going on actually did it and my whole internet was down for like an hour. This guide would have really come in handy back then. Very informative. The stay calm part is the one I could have used the most and I would have never had to actually waste any of my GP.

If you can connect to the internet on other devices, there is some issue with the PS3.

Either hardware damage or the settings are messed up.
