I'm 15, nearly 16, years old.
I would like to have the following questions answered.
1:Can your growth be stopped by lifting weights?
2:I would like to gain muscle in my arms and "pecs". If lifting weights does not stop growth, then how much can I lift safely? I'm 5 foot 8 inches, 10 stone and a stocky build.

Its true that underaged weightlifting will stop your growth and make your muscles deformed, but i wouldnt consider you underaged.

Well I don't know how much 10 stone is...but im 5'10/5'11 and 150lbs, and a naturally "big" build (broad shoulders, stronger muscles, etc.). The way I do it is choose a weight you're comfortable with (something decently heavy, for me in most excercises it's in the 90-110lb range), that you start feeling the burn after about the tenth repetition of. It's very simple really, just keep a good posture and form and do three sets of how ever many repetitions you can possibly do, taking small breaks of about a minute in between.

PS: Supplements help and the gain outweighs the prices ;)

Whether or not weight training stunts growth is highly debated, there has been no solid research saying that weight training stunts growth, but as someone under 18, you have to train smart. Don't take steroids or testosterone supplements.

If you've just started weight lifting, then use bodyweight exercises first, such as dips, pushups, etc.
Try not to use heavy weights with squats and deadlifts, go light on those exercises.
Don't attemp to max, and don't train extremely heavy, train with moderate weights.
Use proper form, and don't jerk about or swing when training.
Make sure you are not overtraining, and if you can, get an adult or older sibling to train with you.
Remember to have your nutrition spot on, it's one of the most important things.

Some would actually suggest that Proper weight Training stimulates growth. Some people such as

"Arnold Schwarzenegger, Lou Ferrigno, Shaquille O’Neal, David Robinson, Karl Malone, Michael Vick, … All started lifting weights in their early teens and are over 6′ /1m82 tall."

As long as you use the proper technique and don't try to over-extend yourself, you'll be fine.

Instead of buying weights, I suggest you get yourself a Gym membership and have someone you know show you some good exercises/the proper technique.

I like how Viper separated Upper Body and Lower Body, as some people tend to mix them together (a bad idea). Admittedly, I don't work work much of my lower body, but I can offer some advice for your upper body.

You should devote one day to the following.

  • Chest
  • Biceps and Triceps
  • Shoulders and Upper Back

Click Here for a great source on different exercises and routines.

If you are younger than 10-12 years I'd say you are too young, but once you are highschool age, you're fine for lifting and not having to worry about getting a stunted height.

If you want to be an athlete first of all, your arms are not super important, in fact, your biceps are one of the least important muscles for being good in sports. I assume you are thinking you need defined biceps and pecs due to the stereotypical strong guy look.

If you do start a lifting routine, I would reccomend the following.

Monday / Wednesday / Friday : Upper Body
Bench Press (Pectorals (Chest))
Dips (Tricep/ Pectorals / Lat Dorsi (Mostly chest, but also some back of upper arm and upper back)
Bent Over Back Rows (Latissimus dorsi (Upper Back))
Curls (Biceps (top of upper arm))
Skull Crushers (Triceps (back of upper arm))
Militry Press (Deltoids (Shoulders))
Ab work, (there are about ten thousand different ab work outs, just google it and find one you like)

Tues / Thurs / Sat: Lower Body
Squats (Quadriceps (front of upper leg))
Gluteal work (butt)
Calf Raises (gastrocnemius (back of lower leg))
Agility work

That is what I can come up with off the top of my head right now, and if you have any questions about why or how to do any of the above, post, and I'll let you know.

This is true, most people put too much emphasis on their biceps and chest, there are atleast 10 parts that you must train, neglecting them will result in a disproportional body, and you won't look as good.

So many routines :| I'll start googling

As a beginner, there's no need for a routine, just work out your whole body (that's 10 parts atleast) every other day, with the correct weights, along with sets. Give yourself enough time to recover, don't train the next day, leave one day out for recovery.

yeah if u starting working out at a young age.. it will stop your maximum growth, and you will not reach your maximum height, i don't know the answer to the other problem though.. but i am 17 and i started working out at the gym this year.

Ya I've heard weight lifting at a young age causes muscle deformites, and lowers your chance of getting a growth sprout. Just try out something like swimming or waterpolo its the best excersise for building muscles.

As I have stated before, the myth that weight lifting stunts growth has never been proven, it actually even had some benefits, such as more denser bones, but if you read my posts above, that is how you work out at a young age.

It can stop growth/deform muscels, yes.

but you'll have to train alot then, if you're almost 16 you could start some training, maybe every 3rd day, don't lift to heavy, I would suggest that you would wait with training your back till your a bit older.
